Chapter Four

Keep’er

“ A t least you get quick care,” Sophia said with a smile. “That’s a job perk, right?”

“Time and place for that,” Liv snapped at Sophia.

Eden sat on the edge of a hospital bed holding an icepack against the golf ball sized lump that protruded from her forehead. She luckily passed all the concussion tests, but she knew the drill. Concussion symptoms could show up hours or days after a nasty hit to the head, meaning she had to monitor herself.

Of course both hospital security and the police had to get involved, asking a bunch of questions and filing reports. Part of Eden wished she would have just spit out some lies.

I tripped and hit my head!

I slipped and fell!

The problem there was that Eden had been knocked out and left on the floor. Found by some woman who needed to use the bathroom before going to see her mother after gallbladder removal surgery.

“You know, they think you’re religious,” Liv said. “You kept saying priest . They thought you wanted to have a priest come and talk to you.”

Eden’s cheeks turned red.

“Can we come to our senses soon and get the police back in here and do the right thing?” Sophia asked. “No offense, Eden, I love you and all, but this is ridiculous. That psycho fucker followed you to work and attacked you. And you’re going to let him get away with it? Like what the fuck?”

Eden felt her heart aching. And racing. Liv wasn’t wrong. Not at all. But still…

“For someone who watches crime shows and biker shows, you don’t know a fucking thing, Liv,” Sophia snapped. “She tells the police it was Cody, then what? They track him down and what? You don’t think he has an alibi already? How can they prove it?”

“Security cameras,” Liv said.

Sophia and Liv started to step closer to one another.

“Please stop,” Eden whispered.

Her two best friends didn’t hear her.

“He’s smart enough to bypass them,” Sophia said.

“Oh, now you sound like someone from a crime show,” Liv said.

“Shut up!” Eden yelled.

It made her head throb. She shut her eyes and felt the tears building up. She sucked in a shaky breath and opened her eyes.

“You’re both right, okay?” Eden said. “I should tell the police. Yet I know Cody will have something up his sleeve. And if I give him the attention, then what? What if the police don’t find a thing? Then I look crazy. That gives Cody a chance to keep coming for me.”

“You have the texts,” Liv whispered.

“That’s actually a good point,” Sophia said.

“I just…”

Eden didn’t want to deal with it anymore. She knew nothing would happen to Cody. At least not in the normal sense of law and order. Innocent until proven guilty carried a lot of weight. Cody wasn’t stupid either. He knew how to dance around the law.

“Let me ask you something,” Liv said with a slight grin. “When you were asking for a priest, you didn’t mean it. You wanted Priest. The man. The biker. You were thinking of that huge dong of his.”

“ Dong ?” Sophia asked. “Did you really just use that word?”

Eden ended up laughing, shaking her head.

Liv hugged her. “At least I got you to laugh for a second. Sorry for freaking out. I’m so angry and scared and I can’t possibly imagine how you must feel.”

“Why were you talking about that biker when you were knocked out?” Sophia asked. “I mean, just curious.”

Eden took the icepack from her head and stood up from the triage bed. She was basically free to leave whenever she wanted. Hospital security and the police had asked their questions and had moved on. Eden figured the hospital would have extra security just to be safe and keep everyone else calm. Same with police presence outside the hospital.

She caught herself biting at a small piece of skin next to her right pointer fingernail. Her mind spinning with thoughts. The depths of her mind telling her what she was thinking about right now maybe suggested she actually had a concussion.

Why had Eden mumbled that biker’s name a few times when she was knocked out? Because she knew this thing with Cody was never going to end. Conventional ways would not work. What Eden needed was a bit of outlaw justice.

What Eden needed was for someone like Priest to beat the living shit out of Cody and ensure her psycho ex would stay away forever.

It’s insane.

You’re insane.

Completely and totally insane.

Eden felt like she didn’t have much of a choice. Arriving back to her apartment she found a bouquet of roses waiting for her from Cody.

A note that read: HEAD over heels for you!

Eden touched the still swollen golf ball sized mark on her head from Cody’s attack in the bathroom. This was the kind of stuff Cody did.

Even if the police took her seriously, sending a woman roses wasn’t a crime. Emphasizing the word HEAD wasn’t a crime. Cody kept everything circumstantial. He was a total psycho but also smart.

If arrested, then what? Lawyers? Court? And…?

Probably nothing. Or if Cody got into trouble, that would not stop him. Nothing was going to stop him.

Unless…

That single word had Eden driving dangerously close to where the Sins of Fire Real Anarchy West motorcycle club conducted their business.

At first Eden wasn’t sure what to really look for. Then she heard the noises. A party going on. Music blaring. Random motorcycle engines revving. Yells and cheers and laughter. Everything hidden behind large gates. Kind of like arriving to a castle built in hell and pulled to earth.

Eden turned toward the gate and then decided against her decision. By then— somehow —two gigantic figures appeared at the back of her car, blocking her from moving in reverse.

“Shit,” she whispered.

One of the muscular figures walked toward her side of the car. She put the window down, debating on acting completely dumb.

Sorry, sir, I took a wrong turn! This isn’t my chiropractors office!

“I’m really sorry,” she managed to say.

The outlaw crouched down and moved closer to her face.

“Are you here for Priest?”

“I guess so,” Eden said. “I was his nurse. In the hospital.”

“Oh, right. You’re a nurse .”

The outlaw smirked at her.

Oh, fuck, he thinks I’m a stripper, doesn’t he?

“I’m really a nurse,” Eden said.

“You got it,” the outlaw said.

He slapped his hand on the top of Eden’s car and then opened the gates. It was like watching a scene from hell unfold before her eyes.

Motorcycles everywhere. Bikers everywhere. Tall guys with muscles. Regular height guys with huge beer bellies. Tattoos and alcohol and women all around.

A good portion of the women were naked or working on getting naked. Every time Eden saw a pair of breasts, she gasped. Her jaw dropped when she saw a woman doing a handstand with her butt against a metal pole, legs spread, with another woman pouring whiskey onto the upside down woman’s vagina and then drinking and licking it.

When someone knocked on her window, Eden jumped and screamed. She turned her head.

“You look familiar,” a voice boomed in her face. “I know you. You’re from the hospital.”

“I guess I took a wrong turn leaving the break room,” Eden said.

She then felt two inches tall and wished she could vanish.

“What are you doing here? Need to check on Priest’s vitals or something?”

“Something like that,” Eden said. “I can tell you’re all really busy. I should just go.”

The biker wearing the leather cut with patches on it opened her door and reached inside to turn the car off. Eden pressed her back against the seat. She felt the biker’s right shoulder slide across her chest, to and from.

He dropped her keys into her lap. “Come on out. Priest is around here somewhere. Probably getting his dick choked on.”

Oh, this was a mistake.

“I’m a sick fuck,” the biker said. “Sorry, but not really. Monte.”

He offered a hand. Eden touched his hand and he pulled her from the car. She stood up and stumbled toward Monte. He put an arm around her and lowered his mouth down near her face.

“How about you forget about Priest and just come with me?” Monte offered.

Monte’s breath stunk like stale whiskey and teeth and a tongue that hadn’t met a toothbrush is about six years.

“I really should just leave,” Eden said. “I can talk to Priest another time. Or never.”

“Have a drink with me at least,” Monte said.

Eden realized Monte had started to walk, taking her with him. She dug her heels a little into the ground, but they just scraped.

Fuck…

Monte whistled and Eden jumped.

“We’ve got a little bit of royalty here! The nurse who kept Priest alive!”

Eden quickly started to shake her head. Now Eden had a bunch of bikers and outlaws pointing at her, raising their glasses and cups to her, pointing, smiling and nodding.

“Where the fuck is Priest anyway?” Monte called out. “He’s got about a minute left before I take this nurse back to my room for myself.”

Now Eden wanted to see Priest more than ever. She did not like Monte nor did she trust him one bit. He was big, strong, smelly , and she hated his entire vibe.

“Who the fuck is looking for me?” a voice boomed from behind Eden.

She took the opportunity to gently elbow Monte and push herself away from him. She turned around expecting to see Priest. Which she did. Priest stood there, maybe twenty feet away from her. Tall, menacing… and covered in blood .

Eden’s mouth parted and she blinked fast. She felt like she was going to pass out.

Oh, I really fucked up.

Priest’s hands were soaked with blood. He wasn’t wearing his leather cut and his gray T-shirt that clung to his sweaty body and looked ready to rip from his thick muscles was also stained with blood.

“I should really go,” Eden said in a low voice that nobody heard.

She began to walk toward her car, envisioning a miracle in which the outlaws allowed her to climb into her car and just simply drive away.

Soon she realized that every step she took, Priest took a step too. Moving with her. Getting closer to her. Ten feet or so away from her, Eden put her hands out.

“I’m so sorry for just showing up,” she said. “I just…”

“Just what?” Priest asked. “Did you bring back my dick piercing?”

“No. I was going to ask for your help with something. It was a bad idea. You’re busy.”

Eden laughed nervously and pointed to Priest’s blood soaked hands.

“You think this is a place where you can just come and go as you please?” Priest asked.

“Not at all. I fucked up. I need to go.”

Eden turned and two outlaws stood right there. She screamed and stepped back. A few seconds later she felt a huge presence behind her. She turned her head and looked up at Priest. His eyes were big, deep, and evil.

Priest curled his lip. “You’re now spending the fucking night here, doll.”
