Chapter Fifteen
Dara
We stay wedged into the tree for several minutes. The hard ridges of Oliver’s body press against mine. Bark and freshly cut grass invade my senses and I sigh. His cock hardens and presses into my belly. Fuck that feels good. He leans down. “As much as I’d love to fuck you against the tree, we have something more important to do. Like avoid those slayers.” He pulls back, smirking, and my face heats.
Oliver grabs hold of my arm and yanks me out of the tree trunk. The cool wind blows the hair from my face. He scans the area. We both stay eerily silent. I don’t move a muscle and try to stay glued to his side. My heart beats rapidly against my chest in anticipation. This place doesn’t feel safe and something within me is twisted over that. What would it be like if the threat of danger wasn’t looming? In the far distance, I hear grunting. I raise my eyebrow toward Oliver.
“Okay, by the sounds of it, the guys are taking care of the slayers. We will meet them back at the house. You right to head off? It will be a good ten kilometres to get there, and we need to be on alert.”
I nod, unable to form the words. Everything is happening so quickly, and I don’t want to lose my focus in case one of those slayers attacks us.
We start walking and stay in complete silence. I take in the surrounding forest, and I feel like I am in my dream home. Birds are singing up above, and the sun’s shining through the trees giving a light orange glow. I take in a deep breath of that fresh forest air and sigh. My whole body feels alight. The energy coursing through me is like nothing else I’ve ever felt before. I’m not sure what to make of it—if it’s something to do with this place or not—but fuck, I’m not complaining.
I actually feel invincible. In some fucked-up way I belong here. There is something about this place that feels so familiar—like I finally have somewhere to call home, and I may never want to leave. The only thing missing is Kayla.
I glance over to Oliver, who’s next to me. He has a serious look on his face as he continues to scan the area, on full alert.
“I can’t believe it’s this unsafe here.” I sigh.
“It never used to be this way. But since your father died, James has gone a little crazy. After he learned of the crystals that your father, Sam, hid, he sent his slayers out in full force throughout Silvia in search of the stones and you, of course. James knew you would be coming back to find them. He just doesn’t know when, but I am sure it won’t be long until he finds out. We will have to get you into training as soon as possible and then go in search of the first stone. If he somehow finds one, it will be catastrophic. It will mean the end of Silvia as we know it. It will not be safe to live here anymore. We will have to relocate to another world, and trust me, I will do everything in my power to not let that happen. Silvia is our home, and it is rightfully yours,” Oliver explains, leaving me feeling a little uneasy.
I don’t know if I have what it takes to find these stones and defeat my uncle. But I know I must because apparently, I am the only saviour. Sorry, Silvia, you are doomed by choosing me for this quest. That’s a lot of responsibility on my shoulders, and I’m just not sure I can do it. I tuck my hair behind my ear and continue walking.
“You will find the crystals, Dara. You are more powerful than you know.”
What the hell? “Did you just read my mind? ‘Cause I know I didn’t just say that out loud.” I pause, stepping over a tree stump. Since he’s in such a revealing mood, what better time to get to the bottom of the whole telepathy thing?
“Please explain. I know you guys can read each other’s minds, which is crazy, but how can you read mine too? What are you?”
Oliver stops, making me turn around to see what’s caused him to stop so suddenly. He looks straight at me while he puts his hand through his hair.
“Ah, I don’t think I am the one to tell you. At least not without all of the guys. Let me just say that we are not normal humans—just like you’re not. Please don’t ask me anything else, Dara. I can’t lie to you. But I can’t tell you until we are all together. Harlan would kill me,” he pleads and starts moving again, leaving me standing there looking like a complete, stunned idiot.
Not normal humans? Then what the hell are they? I never used to believe in the mystical creatures that I read about in fairy tales. However, being here with the guys and with what has happened in the past few days, I think I will believe anything.
Shaking away my thoughts I catch up with Oliver, and we walk in silence for the rest of the trip. All while I try to get my head around the whole not human thing, trying to brainstorm what they could be. And, of course, what am I? According to the guys, I am something and someone special, but am I the same as them? I can’t be as I can’t read people’s thoughts.
I must be completely different. I need to tell the guys what happened when I arrived in Silvia. My body is still feeling ridiculously light. Completely separate from what it was before. Maybe that has something to do with what Oliver was talking about?
The guys are my warriors, so they must need special skills to protect me. I’m eating myself alive trying to figure out what they are and what I am. My foot connects with a huge rock, causing me to trip and flip over before landing straight on my face. Fuck. Why am I suddenly falling over everything like a complete idiot? Like I don’t know how to hike in a forest.
Blair is at my side in seconds, pulling me up. When did he get here? “Shit, Dara, are you okay?” He rubs his hands over my body, trying to remove the dirt. When he gets to my inner thigh, he pauses, and my legs clench together. Blair’s cheeks flame. His fingers scale higher and higher, then he pulls away and I whimper.
He leans in toward me. Our lips are so close when someone claps their hands together, causing me to spin around and I find Harlan and the rest of the guys there. If looks could kill, Blair would be dead right now.
Harlan doesn’t look happy at all, frowning toward Blair and silently asking for an explanation from us.
Declan is standing with his arms crossed, seeming like he wishes he was somewhere else. So do I—if I must admit. I am a grown-arse woman. I don’t need to explain myself to a group of guys. Besides, I can’t even explain to myself what just happened.
“Nothing to see here. Blair was just telling me a secret after he helped me up from my fall.” I try my best to sound serious, but I can’t help the smirk that forms on my lips.
“I don’t even want to know what you guys were doing; it’s none of my business. But try to keep it PG-rated next time. Or behind closed doors, if that’s where it was heading,” Harlan says while he shakes his head at us.
I turn back around to Blair and he’s blushing probably just as hard as I am.
“I am just disappointed I missed the whole show. Why did you have to interrupt them, Harlan? It was just getting good.” Oliver laughs as he comes over to Harlan and puts his arm around him.
Harlan pushes Oliver’s arm off and starts walking ahead of us. “Come on. Let’s go home. I don’t want us standing out in the open for too long. We fought off the slayers, but more will be back soon, and I’d prefer not to be around to see them.”
My back straightens at the mention of the slayers. I glance around the forest but it’s deadly silent apart from our feet crunching against the dead leaves. I stay back, walking with Oliver. I need to clear my head and Oliver is just the person to help with that. With his carefree, funny attitude, he is a breath of fresh air.
He puts his arm around me, pulling me tightly against his body. “You pulled a little number on Blair back there, didn’t you? I have never seen him look at anyone like he was looking at you. Now, tell me. What was the secret that he was telling you—I mean, telling your lips?” he asks, mocking me.
“Oh, just something about you, something very personal that I will be keeping to myself. But rest assured, I will be using it to my advantage when the time is right.”
He laughs which has me smiling even more.
He leans down to my ear and whispers, “I’d love to tell you some secrets that would leave you feeling hot and bothered. Things that would make your legs weak. Can you keep smiling like that from now on? It is doing things to me.” He quickly pulls away, leaving me with my thoughts as he walks off ahead.
I sigh and continue in a state of shock. These guys will be the death of me—I’m sure of it. How will I be able to concentrate with them saying hot things like that to me?
What have I gotten myself into? Something much bigger than I ever imagined.
