Prologue

TANNER

I feel ridiculous sitting at the kitchen table writing in a journal like I’m back in middle school, but therapist’s orders, and I’m nothing if not great at taking orders.

Apparently this is supposed to help me work through everything.

I’m not sure I believe it yet. Fallon already has a job lined up in her hometown and Briggs will be enrolled in kindergarten there.

I’m fucking terrified of what happens next. Everything is changing—I’ve changed.

Coming out to my wife.

Soon to be divorced.

Getting out of the Air Force.

Moving across the country to coparent with my soon-to-be ex-wife.

Telling my parents I’m gay.

Leaving everything I know and not even knowing who I am.

What if I can’t do this?

The pen falls from my hand and lands softly on the table as my heart hammers in my chest. Seeing my fears listed in black and white is a special kind of hell I wasn’t prepared for. Everything will be fine.

But I have no way of knowing that.

And now it’s too late.

There’s nothing to do but keep moving forward.

Fuck.
