Aloo ke parathe – potato stuffed flatbread

Antyesti – the penultimate rite performed in a Hindu ritual for the deceased, prior to cremation of the body

Bachcha or Beta – child (used as a term of endearment, or a colloquial way to address someone much younger)

Baraat – pre-wedding ceremony that takes a groom to the wedding venue. Generally, friends and family dance to music as they lead a groom to the altar where they wait for the bride's entry

Dal Chawal – lentils and rice, this is a common comfort food in the Indian subcontinent

Haan – yes (when spoken, the n is silent, and sounds similar to an exclaimed 'huh' )

Kudi – punjabi word for 'girl'

Lehenga – traditional dress/skirt for women

Mantras – ritualistic chanting

Mooli ke parathe – radish stuffed flatbread

Nanaji (Nanu) – maternal grandfather (grandpa)

Naniji (Nani) – maternal grandmother (grandma)

Sherwani – traditional garment for men

Sindoor – vermillion (a red powder applied onto the forehead of Hindu women to signify that they are married)

Tilak – a red paste worn on the forehead as a precursor to taking part in any spiritual or religious ceremonies, inclusive of wedding rites
