Chapter 45

”What could a human offer me?” I could hear him.

Silva, I could hear him.

I couldn’t breathe. I pushed harder despite the sharp pains in my lungs. I needed to catch my breath and shake the rain off, but I couldn’t stop.

I’m coming, Eden.

“Me.” Eden’s voice sounded definitive.

I faltered, skidding to a stop.

“You?” The monster of a wolf laughed.

“You want the throne, do you not?” Her voice didn’t sound afraid.

“You’ve done your research, little Historian.” He sounded impressed.

The fog rolled in thick, making it hard to see. I followed the sounds of their voices, and it grew more difficult to see in the dense cloud layer that blanketed the forest.

“It is my Branch, after all.”

“It will be advantageous to have you on my side.”

“I do have conditions.”

“I would be disappointed if you didn’t.”

Trees loomed like twisted shadows, and the two voices grew louder by the second.

Straining my ears, I heard not one, not two, but eight separate hearts beating over the roar of the river. Friend or foe, I wasn’t sure. And they were guaranteed to hear mine.

I let out a low, short howl.
