CHAPTER EIGHT

TANNOR

There was no peace that night and I continued glancing at the door, hoping she would return. Hoping it was nothing more than a tease. I’d never been teased before. The past few days were a mass of things I’d never experienced. Just thinking of the bath she gave me and how she used her hand to bring me to the brink of pleasure made my cock twitch. I was so frustrated after yanking three times and coming that I tried to stand but ended collapsing back on the bed the moment the heel of my foot pressed into the floor.

Spent, I laid on the bed, desperately seeking her scent. This was madness. Surely, she’d used her magic.

“Denial is turning you on all on your own.”

My cock twitched again. I needed to find a way of surviving this. Surely, I couldn’t last if she continued her little lessons. To think she was somewhere beyond that door with her fingers inside of her as she thought of me in this predicament drove me to insanity. I wasn’t certain if I even enjoyed her company. No, that would be a lie. Long ago, I promised to stop the lies I told myself.

Twisting my head, I spotted the small vials of medicine she’d left behind. She counted on me obeying her orders and drinking another in the evening. But she wasn’t here to supervise. A part of me wished to deny her ordering me about. Another part, a more sensible part, urged me to drink it. I’d be on my feet once more and I could escape.

Escape where? Go where? I slowly looked down at my chest. Inside of me were my wings. What if she could aid me in releasing them? If she wished, I was certain she could find a way. If she thought she loved me. If she thought I loved her.

A slow plan crept into my mind and gave me purpose. If she could set me free, I could easily fly off without harming her, without having to fight her. I could wait until she slept in my arms, unaware of my plans, and slip out before she woke.

Yes. I pressed my hand to my chest, and it reminded me of her hands caressing my skin in the softest of manners. How her pebbled nipples brushed my back through that thin gown she wore.

It was dishonest, but… I could enjoy myself while still finding freedom. Yes. That would be the plan. That would be my hope. With determination, I took the small vial, uncorked it, and drank it. The bitter acrid taste coated my tongue, and I blanched.

She’d return and find that I’d obeyed. That thought fluttered a strange sensation through me and I was annoyed to find that I was once more hardening. With a curse, I yanked at myself. But it was the image of her pleased face and her soft words of praise that sent me over the edge.

I needed to leave. With the memories of her actions and the hope of escape wedged in my dreams, I found sleep.

When I woke, it was when someone was probing my feet. There was sharp discomfort, and I jolted up, but a soft hand was quickly on my shoulder. I smelled Nalla and when I blinked up; I found her there, at my shoulder. It was morning, and I’d slept without waking through the night.

That was a first.

“She’s just checking on your wounds,” Nalla said, and her hand slid down my back.

After leaving me last night, I should’ve shoved her off, snapped biting words. But she smelled fresh and inviting and I remembered how I had a plan. A plan I must enact sooner rather than later.

The medic who checked my feet made a noise of approval and she nodded her head as she studied me. “Healing nicely, faster than expected, actually.” She was the same as yesterday and in her hand, she held a pomade. “He may be right as normal by tonight. But the tonic must be drunk to ensure the poison is completely out of his system.”

She handed Nalla the vial and stood up with a creak on her back. “Let them uncovered until then, helps dry it out and speed the healing.”

I wiggled my toes and found that the pain was gone and all that was left was a dull discomfort. I’d never healed this quickly. My hope of escaping renewed.

“He’s been drinking the tonic, just as instructed,” Nalla said and cast me a look at what I can only describe as praise.

That fluttering entered my stomach once more and my eyes followed her as she walked the medic to the door. She wore a green gown today; it fluttered behind her, leaving a trail of her sweet perfume. Her hair was down, cascading down her back in thick brown rivulets.

In the morning light, she looked beautiful, all soft curves and promising eyes. She took a seat where the medic had sat, a small stool at the foot of the bed. Uncorking the salve she focused on her task of slathering the gelatinous substance over the tender skin. It was cold and had to hold in a shiver.

“It’s a little cold, but it’ll help with scabbing,” she said and glanced at me through her lashes.

I said nothing because I was afraid of my words and their meanings. Recalling the role I had to play, I sighed and laid back down, trying to relax as she massaged the pomade on my skin. Her fingers felt wonderful, soothing, and strong.

“You drank your medicine,” her voice was tender and when I opened my eyes, I found her studying me.

There was appreciation in her brown orbs.

“You left me with little to do when you left,” I couldn’t help but snapped. I was still annoyed at her tactics despite enjoying the frustration tinged with the pleasure it produced.

“Little?” she asked, and I found that her coy teasing smile was my favorite of her smiles.

“And what lessons do you have planned for today?” I didn’t want to know, but at the same time, I was desperate to prepare myself for whatever malevolent agenda she’d planned.

She pressed harder into the arc of my foot and a lingering needle of pain shot up, making me wince. To my surprise, she leaned forward and softly kissed the spot she’d abused. Her eyes never left mine as she did this.

No. No. My cock twitched. She smirked, inhaling deeply. There was a flush of embarrassment that rushed through me at her actions. It was becoming too easy for any of her actions to flood me with need. It must surely be some magical malady.

“Don’t be ashamed, Tannor,” she said, kneading her fingers into my feet. “Pain coupled with pleasure can be a most rewarding sensation.”

My breath caught at my throat when she kneaded too hard once more, making a sharp pain spike up my foot. She stood and moved closer to me, sitting by my hip and staring at my open chest. On instinct, I placed my hands on her waist and pulled her in, but she pushed against my chest. We stared at one another, and I realized she had a small mole at her temple, usually covered by her curls. Slowly, she leaned in and pressed her lips to mine.

It was a chaste kiss, but it was the first kiss I’d ever received. Something strange happened to me. Like happiness and pleasure. It wasn’t intense sexual pleasure, but something else. A subtle contentment at being in her arms and feeling her tenderness directed towards me and only me.

We stared at one another. Her eyes took me in, lingering on different areas of my face.

“I’ll let you rest,” she said and made to stand. In a bold gesture, I held on to her arm and pulled her back to me.

“I’ve had enough rest,” I said and hoped it would have her linger longer. Play a different game or at least have some conversation. I couldn’t imagine another ten hours locked here without the ability to walk.

She raised a brow. “Really? Do you truly wish to play, Tannor?”

A shiver of apprehension swam through me. This was a slippery road, given the promises she’d made and the experience she claimed to have.

“What game do you have in mind?” I asked, words hard to form.

She glanced at my hardening cock with a smile. “Something that began what we started.”

Yes. Oh, gods yes. Another bath would be wonderful. But the knock on the door startled the both of us and she pulled back with an annoyed look. Her entire demeanor switched, and she went from a sweet goddess who enjoyed teasing me to a frightening huntress who’d been disturbed from her game.

“My lady, the general is here to see you,” the voice on the other end said.

Nalla swiftly stood, and I could sense the fright emanating from her. For a moment I thought it was for herself, but she looked at me with wide concerned eyes. That’s when I realized she feared for my safety.

“Drink your medicine,” she said quickly and took a vial, pressing it into my hand.

I would’ve said something, but she surprised me by pressing her mouth to my forehead and leaving behind a kiss. No one had ever done that, and the shock of the action had me stupidly nodding and agreeing to follow her instructions.

“Will you be back?” I absolutely hated, abhorred, wished to kill the vulnerability laced in my voice.

She paused her stride and glanced at me, her eyes softening. “Later.”

The noncommittal response left me staring at the same room and feeling incredibly alone and uncertain. I didn’t want her to leave.

For lack of things to do, I wondered what would frighten Nalla in such a way. If the general hurt her… I fisted my hand and gulped my medicine. I needed to get better. I may attempt to fool her into loving me, but I didn’t wish her hurt. Not by me or anyone else. Actually, I was fairly certain that at this point, I would kill whoever even tried.
