CHAPTER 15
CAINE
T here she is. I was about to drop everything and run over to her, rip that asshole's hands off her body and take her out of here. Danner could obviously tell I was thinking something like that and she stepped in front of me before I could make my move.
“Play it cool just a little longer,” she scolds.
“She’s right fucking there,” I practically growl.
“We’ll get her, but we can’t get kicked out of here before that happens.”
She shoves the tray I’m supposed to be holding into my chest. We’re disguised as caterers, which was what Danner’s big plan was, and the stupid outfit we have to wear is driving me insane. The black button up shirt is too tight on my arms, I had to roll the sleeves up to my elbows, and my biceps are straining the fabric. The vest remains unbuttoned because it didn’t fit over my chest.
I’m sure I stick out around here, but no one has said anything. They just handed me a tray and said to serve. Adam and Drew are also around here, looking equally out of place, but even if one of us gets kicked out we have the others. Danner’s the only one of us who blends in, but I still don’t like her telling me what to do.
Keeping my eye on Max across the room, I pretend to work, but really, I ignore anyone who tries to stop me to get anything off the tray I’m carrying.
There’s a moment where Max says something to the soon-to-be dead man, and he lets her go. Her eyes find mine briefly, and it’s the only signal I need. Dropping the tray onto the nearest table, I follow close behind her, not sure of where she’s going.
She goes through a door, and I’m not far behind, locking it behind me as soon as I’m in. I think it’s a bathroom, but I don’t even look around to confirm, because all I see is Max.
She’s looking directly at me, her red hair is curled and looks ready to be wound around my fist. Her hazel eyes are wild as her chest heaves with heavy breaths. Her voice is quiet as she sighs, “You’re here.”
Closing the distance between us, I grip her throat and push her against the wall, letting my mouth hover over hers. “I’m here.”
I crash our lips together roughly, tasting her for the first time in way too long. She opens for me immediately and I tighten my grip on her throat while my tongue plunges into her mouth. She moans and I’m tempted to lift this tight little dress she’s wearing and fuck her right here. That way the next time that fucking asshole puts his disgusting hands on her, my cum will be dripping from her pussy.
She breaks our kiss, and I move my hand to the back of her head, grabbing her hair and pulling her head back while I trail my mouth down her neck, biting hard enough to leave a mark.
“Wait, Caine, you’re here.” She pushes against my chest, and I growl, refusing to let up. “Look at me.”
This time I listen, pulling back and resting our foreheads together so I can see her. I’ve missed getting to look at her, watching her even when she doesn’t know it. The way she feels in my arms. I’m never letting her go again.
“We don’t have a ton of time, I have to get back. How are you all here?” She grips the vest tightly, keeping me anchored to her like I might float away.
“We’re here to bring you back home, and if that guy doesn’t stop touching you then we’re going to have a problem in front of all these people,” I say darkly.
“Don’t worry, I’ll break his hands before you get the chance.” She smirks.
I almost tell her I love her right now. The words are so close to escaping, but I manage to stop myself by taking her mouth again. Fuck this woman has been perfect for me all along, but she’s even more perfect right now.
She pushes against my chest again and I break away with an annoyed sound.
“I need to go back out there; please tell me you guys are sticking around?” I hear the pleading tone in her voice, the desperation.
“We aren’t going anywhere without you, killer,” I tell her honestly.
With another quick press of our lips, she rushes out of the bathroom and I don’t wait as long as I probably should before following her out.
Once I’m back out there, I see Adam and approach him. “I talked to Max.”
“What did she say?” he questions.
“Not much, her mouth was a little busy.”
“Seriously, the first chance you get you have her blow you?”
“No, you asshole.” I shake my head. “But that guy that thinks he’s engaged to her isn’t getting out of here alive. Not when he’s put his hands on what’s mine.”
“For once we agree on something. Stay close, and keep track of Drew and Danner.”
“You keep track of them, I’m not taking my eyes off Max.”
The night goes on and I stay true to my word, keeping my eyes trained on Max throughout the entire night. Everyone sits down for dinner, the alcohol in the glasses on the table being kept full. Including the man who won’t leave her side.
I’ve been keeping track of how many drinks he tosses back and the way he’s growing loud and unsteady. It’s getting harder and harder to hold back because I want nothing more than to just steal Max away from this place.
I lose track of her for no more than ten seconds, and I’m unable to find her again. I see Drew, Adam, and Danner all looking around as well. I rush toward Danner first. “Where did she go?”
“I don’t know.” She shakes her head, pulling me into a less crowded area, her head on a swivel.
“Where’s that fuckwad?” I snap louder because I can’t see him either.
Drew comes over. “Where’d they go?”
Adam joins last. “Did they leave?”
“What the fuck?” I shout louder than I should.
She wasn’t supposed to leave. We were going to take her out of here with us, so how the fuck did she get away? I rip off the stupid vest, and loosen the buttons near the collar of the shirt. “We’re going to that house; I don’t give a fuck.”
I’m surprised when no one argues with me. We all storm out of the venue, not caring that we’re being yelled at. I just hope that we aren’t going to be too late getting to Max and getting her the fuck out of here.
