Prologue

KATIE

“What do you mean, you’re not going? You’re my maid of honor, not to mention my sister. You have to go.”

It’s not how I wanted this to go either, but here we are.

Less than four weeks away from my older sister’s wedding to the love of her life and only two weeks away from the bridal party cruise of a lifetime. I can’t go.

Who knew how popular the fourteen-day cruise to the Caribbean would be?

Not only did I lose out on the money I already paid for the room I was supposed to share with my now ex-boyfriend, who happens to also be a groomsman, but when I called to book a new room, they were sold out.

I even tried to cancel my spot in my ex-boyfriend’s room, but they wouldn’t let me.

So here I am, finally fessing up to my sister that I won’t be there while she gets drunk for two weeks straight.

“I’m sorry, Ness. I didn’t expect Barrett to fuck some floozy and get caught. My choice is to either room with him anyway or not go. I love you, but I refuse to share a room with him.”

That familiar sick feeling settles in my stomach.

I should have known better, really. Barrett is charming and always has a million girls around him. He never once showed interest in me in the five years I’ve known him. Not until eight months ago.

Nessa and Grant threw together a party at the last minute to celebrate their engagement, even though they had been engaged for months already. I think it was more my sister than him. She does random things like that often. I mean, I can’t tell you how many times she rearranges her living room.

Barrett had come alone for once, and after we had talked for a while out on the balcony, he asked for my number.

Several dates later, and I thought we were going places. So much so that we booked our room on the cruise ship together.

Then last week, I walked in on him banging a random chick in his building.

It wasn’t even as if I surprised him. We had planned to meet at his place for lunch.

He wanted me to catch him.

Which is fine if he wanted to break up. It’s not like I thought I was desperately in love with the guy. I mean, I thought we had a future, but I wasn’t as hurt by his actions as I should have been. Still, the least he could have done was be a man about it and end it.

Coward.

“What if I find you a room to stay in?”

“I already called all your bridesmaids. They all have roommates already. It’s fine. I really would rather not be stuck on a cruise ship with Barrett anyway.”

Nessa sighs. “Please, Kate? If I find you somewhere, say you’ll come. I won’t have nearly as much fun without you by my side. You can’t miss this.”

Groaning, I rub my hand down my face. “Fine, but it better not be your room or on the same floor as dickwipe.”

“Yay. Okay. I’ll let you go. I got a room to find for you.”

And why the fuck do I feel like that’s the final nail in the coffin?
