Chapter 27

Chapter Twenty-Seven

R idiculous. She was being ridiculous.

Sunny swiped a tear from under her right eye. Her thumb was blackened with mascara. Shit, she was going to show up with red eyes and rivers of eye makeup on her cheeks.

Her car was stopped on the highway in Las Vegas morning rush hour. Why’d she have to pick up Gabe’s phone? If she’d ignored the call, she and Gabe could be sitting out the traffic in the hotel restaurant. She could’ve soaked up a little more of his kindness, his strength, his loyalty, plus a few more of his hot kisses, to fortify her for her return home.

But she’d picked it up, stuck her nose into his business. Again. Tried to fix him. Failed. Gabe was wonderful just the way he was. He didn’t need fixing.

Unlike her parents. They needed her. She had the increasingly urgent texts from her mother to prove it.

Mom: When do you plan to get here?

Mom: Argus, the showrunner, is asking about you. When will you be here?

Mom: Susan, please call me. This is an important opportunity for you, and I need you here.

She tightened her grip on the wheel. Finally, her mother needed her. Gabe didn’t. He had Michael, Mary, and Rafe. He was better off without her.

She needed to learn how to be better off without him.
