Maddie ran to the front door of Horndean as if she were still a schoolgirl, wrenching it open to look out into the golden afternoon. A very handsome man stood waiting in the driveway, holding the reins of his magnificent warhorse, looking as if he had wandered out of one of the stories that the Horndean girls relished so much.
