Chapter 36 New Connections #2

“A small one,” Sheila says. “Our current nurse is out of town for the weekend.”

“Is that really okay, Flo?” Silas asks.

“Absolutely,” she exclaims.

Sheila turns to us. “I will leave the rest to you, Alpha Marcellus, Lord Silas.”

Rest assured, I link Sheila. Silas is going to research what’s going on.

Sheila nods, but I can clearly see the worry in her eyes. She might not be Maddie’s birth mom, but she became her mother the moment she held her in her arms and agreed to adopt her to keep her safe from Aloysius.

“Alright, everyone,” I turn to the others. “Let’s make sure to help our new pack members settle in.”

Both Silas and I always involve ourselves whenever we have new members join us, to show them we are there, not judging them and that they have a safe space here.

“You are Bambi? Did I remember that correctly?” I ask the young woman who has left her pack and family behind to be with her little brother.

“Yes,” she smiles brightly at me. “My real name is Helga, though. But seriously, it doesn’t fit me.”

“Bambi is perfect for you,” her younger brother, Asher, says.

It really is. She has big brown eyes and a round face, giving her an almost innocent look, but I am sure she is far stronger than she looks.

It takes great strength to stand up for someone and to leave the safety of your pack to protect someone you love.

“Seeing how you are family, how about you both have a cottage together?” I offer.

“Is that possible?” Bambi asks hopefully.

“Of course. We have group homes here, too, for minors and for those who need help settling into life, but I think a private cottage would be the best option for you.”

“Thank you so much, Alpha,” Bambi says. “And I want to be of help here, too.”

“And me,” Asher says.

“You can go back to school,” I tell him. “We don’t let minors work here.”

“See, Ash? I told you everything would end well,” she smiles. “I knew Alpha Eugene would make sure that we end up at a good place. He has the reputation of being a good leader.”

“I am very happy to hear that about my brother,” I tell her before waving at one of my warriors. “He will show you to your new home. We’ll have dinner with the whole pack later today, at 10 p.m. I know it’s late, but it’s just an exception. Usually, dinner is at a much earlier hour.”

“Thank you,” she says. “Oh, and as I said, I am eager to help. I’ve actually got some accountancy classes under my belt.

So, if you are in need of someone to help with organization, math or anything paperwork-related, I could help.

And if not, I can do something else, like helping out in the kitchen. ”

Silas laughs. “He definitely needs help with the paperwork.”

“He is not wrong,” I grin. “Let’s talk about that later, Bambi. I would like to hear more about what you can offer.”

She nods before taking off with her brother and following the warrior to their new home. Flo was right. It’s good that she joined. She is confident and not afraid to talk to me, which will help the others in opening up to me, as well.

I turn my attention to our other new arrivals, helping Silas with introducing them and showing them around. Silas leaves briefly to take a call.

“That was Cass,” he says when he returns. A smirk curls his lips. “Apparently, he wants me to chaperone Julianus, so he won’t try anything weird with Nova.”

“Something tells me that Nova has her own say in this,” I laugh.

“That’s what I said, and then asked him when did he turn into a silly, overprotective brother. I think that insulted him, so I invited him and Nova over for dinner,” Silas says.

“Aw, he will survive. You are pretty good at calling people out on their shit,” I say.

“Why do you think I invited him over?” Silas says. “I am not done with the talk.”

“Yeah, this relationship has to work,” I say. “If Julianus and Nova accept each other, he will not have to hide anymore, and he won’t have to sleep over at our pack.”

“Exactly. It’s a win-win for everyone,” Silas chuckles.

“Good thing we are on the same page here,” I say, taking his hand. “Come, let’s go and check on Maddie. I know you are worried.”

If Aloysius didn’t exist, Maddie would have grown up knowing Silas was her family. It’s just sad.

Our infirmary is small and only for emergencies for now, as we are a small pack, but the plan is to expand it within the next year. “How is she doing?” I whisper when I step into the small bedroom.

“She is sleeping,” Flo says. “She is okay, but her fever is pretty high, though. She needs to be under supervision.”

“I am going to stay with her,” Sheila says.

“If it isn’t better within the next two days, you will need to get her to a professional,” Flo says, before gazing at me. “Marc, this child… she isn’t a full werewolf, is she? She is-“

I put a finger on my lips.

Flo stares at me, looking from me to Silas and then to Sheila. “I get it,” she says. “Well, not all of it obviously, but enough to stay quiet about this.”

“Thank you, Flo,” I say.

“Come, I will show you the pack and your guest room, and then you need to have dinner with us.” I pause. “Maddie is safe for now, isn’t she?”

“Yes,” Flo assures us. “If Sheila stays with her just in case, it’s fine.”

Sheila has already snuggled up with Maddie, her eyes not leaving the little girl. “I will make sure you and Maddie get something to eat,” I reassure her.

“I will check on you later,” Silas promises.

“Make sure to link us when something is off. Even if you think it’s just something minor. The moment you are worried, link us, okay?”

Sheila nods. “Thank you, Alpha.”

We leave the room, quietly closing the door behind us. “Thank you for your help, Flo,” I say. “And sorry for having you work after such a long drive.”

“I was happy to jump in, but really, if Maddie still has such a high fever tomorrow or the day after, make sure she sees a doctor,” she says, following us outside.

“We will.”

Flo looks like she wants to say more, but halts suddenly, a frown on her face.

“Is something wrong?” Silas asks. “Is it because of Maddie?”

“No,” Flo turns around, her eyes wide and a hopeful expression on her face, mixed with a hint of anxiety and excitement.

“No way,” I mutter.

“He is here,” Flo exclaims. “My mate!”
