ALLEY

PRESENT DAY

AUGUST

“Hi, you’ve reached Jensen Adams. You know what to do.”

Dammit. His voicemail again. That’s the sixth time in twenty minutes.

I end the call, setting my phone next to the leather-bound dinner menu. The white tablecloth beneath it is perfectly crisp and untouched. If I leave now and he shows, we lose our table. But if he doesn’t…

I don’t even know how much longer they’ll let me sit here. This place is reservation-only, and nearly impossible to get into. I booked it weeks ago.

I try texting again.

Where are you? I’m starting to worry... Please call me.

Two years married. Happy anniversary to me.

My fingers drum against the table, heat creeping over my cheeks. I feel ridiculous sitting here alone. I glance down, avoiding the server’s stare as he walks past. He probably thinks I’ve been stood up. How could he not?

I cross my legs, my gaze shifting to the empty seat across from me.

God, where is he?

I exhale sharply, trying to force a small smile, but it doesn’t quite stick.

I’ll give him five more minutes.

I close my eyes, letting my mind drift back to the first time I saw him. Just like that, my lips curve up at the memory. Because if there’s one thing Jensen Adams has always been good at, it’s making me smile.
