Epilogue
Dallas sat at his desk in his office in the police station. It was after midnight on a Saturday, and the only noise was the soft murmurings of police officers as they came and went with their nightly duties.
Before him on his desk were the murder books on all the scarecrow killings. Thank goodness Suzanna’s attacker had been found and was now in jail, leaving Dallas free to once again focus solely on the heinous murders happening in the small town that he loved.
Every minute of every day Dallas was worried another human scarecrow would show up.
He wished he could figure out the motive for these killings.
He needed to understand the dressing up and desecration of the corpses—the sewing up of their mouths and the taking of their eyes.
He felt if he could just understand the motive, he would be able to catch the murderer.
However, at the moment he had no idea what was driving the killer to dress up his victims and take their eyes.
He had three clues to go on. The first was that the eyes had been removed by a fairly skillful hand with a scalpel.
The second clue was two buttons that had been retrieved at one of the scenes…
buttons he believed had come off the killer’s shirt.
The third clue was a charm in the shape of a crow that appeared to have come off a watch or a key chain.
The charm had been found on the floor next to the scarecrow in Suzanna’s classroom, and she had assured him that it didn’t belong to her.
So, who was this person? Somewhere in the small town a monster was hiding, and Dallas only hoped he could ferret him out before another woman was killed.
