Chapter 3 #2
She arches a brow at him before looking down at his notebook and then at her tablet. Her friend side-eyes them but focuses on her work. The bloodsucker says something but since I’m in Callahan’s mind I can’t actually hear it.
She asked why I cared. He tells me while chuckling.
Just curious. I’m Callahan. Callahan Armani.
Her best friend’s eyes widen but she doesn’t look at the bloodsucker or Callahan.
Ms. Waterstone must know that name. I’d be surprised if she didn’t.
The Armani’s have been the Devil Councilmen on the Mage Board since the beginning of it.
I figured someone who knows about blood witches would have proper school supplies.
She rolls her eyes and goes back to writing on the table. Completely ignoring Callahan and his shock floods my brain.
What a fucking brat.
And I just bet you’d like to teach her a lesson wouldn’t you, Asier.
Lust floods my brain and I kick him out of my mind. I can see him silently chuckling but I ignore it as I refocus on my work. It doesn’t help though because the lust is lingering in my mind and fucking hell that kid. He didn’t need to fucking say that shit to me.
I drag my hand down my face and berate myself about getting back to work. Despite my loathing it I do have a job I need to be relatively good at.
Finally, I’m able to focus and I can get through the rest of class. The bloodsucker doesn’t spare me another glance and keeps her face perfectly neutral. Callahan doesn’t try talking to her again though I’m sure he wants to. He keeps looking at her like she’s something he’d want to eat.
I end the class with listing the work they need to finish before next class.
All of which is in their portal. Once that’s done the bell in the northern belltower begins ringing and they all start filing out.
Callahan stands and begins to turn towards the girl but she and her friend are already halfway through the isle on the opposite side.
Ms. Waterstone is whispering to her, too quietly for me to hear. But the bloodsucker rolls her eyes at something as they come down the steps. I’m sure they went that way to avoid Callahan but that just means they’ll have to pass me.
“I’m being serious, Mavyn” Ms. Waterstone whispers, both of them getting closer to me and allowing me to hear them. “Callahan is the son of the devil councilmen in the Mage Board. Even Asher prefers to stay away from them.”
“I said okay, Jullia – “
“Okay is not enough. You looked both him and the freaking professor straight in the eye. You can’t do that,” she stresses. At least Ms. Waterstone is smart enough to know that. Even if I command all a person’s attention when speaking, they look at me but never in my eyes. Let alone glare at me.
The bloodsucker huffs and I’m sure she rolls her eyes again.
“And we’re close enough that said devil can hear everything we’re whispering about.”
Involuntarily I look up and low and behold the bloodsucker is staring directly at me. Her friend makes a noise, but she simply quirks a brow and stares directly into my eyes.
“Plus,” she continues to whisper, “in my early childhood I was raised by a devil. The egotistical assholes don’t bother me.”
They both walk past me and over the top of their heads I catch Callahan with wide eyes watching them before flicking up to me. He must have heard her too. And for all unholy gods who the fuck is this girl?
They exit the class and Callahan begins strolling over to my desk as the last couple students leave too. He waits until they’re all out before nodding his head and making the door slam shut. Giving us privacy while also creating a sound barrier around us as an added security.
“Sooo,” he drags out. Then he huffs out a breath. “What are we planning to do?”
Releasing a breath as well, I drag my hand over my face and lean against my desk. I have absolutely no idea.
“Because if you’re thinking about the rebels and whatever their plans are with the Mage Council, I doubt one little girl is gonna be a problem. Or,” he drags the word out like he does so often, “are you thinking about the oracle and the damnation of the burning sun?”
So many thoughts. Too many thoughts. So much stress is going to actually end up killing me. The damn emotion is reducing me to a mere mortal.
“I’m thinking, firstly, that I want to know why the Mage Board allowed a vampire into the campus.
See if Darian can contact the enforcers and if they’re on anyone’s payroll.
” Rubbing my face for what feels like the millionth time today, I heave.
“And just see if we can get as much information on her as possible. Have Thorne ask Asher Ruleten and I want to know why he lets a vampire near his little girlfriend. We’ll start with that. ”
Callahan nods and begins skipping towards the door. Dropping the sound barrier and opening the door, he tips an invisible hat off to me and leaves.
Unholy gods, fucking Mage Board. Even the councilmen on our side are still politicians. I need a damned drink.
Despite myself I look over to where she was sitting.
I shouldn’t care. What the fuck does it matter to me what she is or why she’s here.
Unless she is a spy from the Mage Board.
And if she is, then at least she can say in the afterlife that she was the first vampire to step foot in Syngenia University.
