Chapter 11
Eleven
I did what I told Thorne I would do. I walked in a daze back to my dorm room where Jullia, Asher, and Hanna were waiting. I drank every blood bag in my storage, gave a rundown – I think – to everyone, then passed out.
I didn’t wake up till later Sunday night to Jullia reading in her bed. She had left a cup of water on my desk that I guzzled down. Then she told me the showers were empty and I nodded as I grabbed the towel she was letting me borrow and made my way over.
It felt good to wash the grime off from the night.
I had told Jullia I’d wash her clothes before giving them back, but she said she never wears the pants and the shirt was ripped so I could just keep them.
I felt guilty about it but I promised myself I’d find a job this week and pay her back for everything.
I’ll have to pay the demigod shapeshifter back too.
Turns out Jullia was right and Asher is still going on about it as the three of us head towards the cafeteria for breakfast. Keeping to the routine we had last week.
Asher picks us up and we go to breakfast before me and Jullia walk to our first class.
I wish he had just been a regular snake. I miss my own viper. I miss home.
Nothing happens this Monday as we make our way to the line. People still sometimes stare and whisper, but no one approaches me and I’m more or less left alone.
Jullia nudges me and I blink sleepy eyes at her. Food is a must now since I’ve gotten enough sleep. After eating I’ll be back to normal. Then I have to figure out an excuse for why I don’t have a finished Syngenia origins paper that is supposed to be due today.
“I know you don’t look at it,” she whispers, holding out her tablet to a paused video. “But you kind of went viral. Someone had recorded you shoving Darian away and calling him Thorne’s winged bitch. Just an fyi in case anyone says anything about it.”
She presses play and there we are. Asher keeping hold of Jullia to the side with me in the center and the angel behind me.
His hands are caging me in and then I shove him.
It didn’t look all the powerful, but it pushes him back a couple feet.
The side of his face caught on camera with a shocked expression.
Yeah, bitch, I bet you didn’t know I could do that.
There’s actually a lot I can do, but I don’t have a training class on my schedule.
You can’t start taking those until second year.
Which Jullia thinks is bullshit since she does train, but apparently the school isn’t designed to create only warriors.
Still, it could be some sort of extracurricular or like an elective. Not that I was able to pick my classes anyway, but still. I wonder if students are able to use the training arena and gym after classes. I’ll have to ask Asher later since he is taking a training class.
The video comes to Thorne telling me not to threaten people and that’s when I call Darian a winged bitch.
It makes me smile because I look badass with my makeup and crossed arms. I have a bad habit of not standing up for myself – or so Ms. Elaycia says – but there are times when I can do it. And I did it then beautifully.
The video ends right as Thorne appears in front of me and then Jullia scrolls to where all the views, likes, and comments are.
The first comment I see is ‘from now on my bet’s on the vampire’. When I look up to Jullia she’s wincing and I give her a look.
“Did you read the other comments?” she asks hesitantly.
Looking back down at the screen I take my finger and scroll down more. There’s a few more comments about how badass the ‘vampire’ is, but then I see why Jullia is being so cautious.
“I’d be her bitch as long as she kept those long legs open,” I read. Turning a few heads that I ignore as I laugh. Despite being so energy-less, it’s kind of amusing. I wave Jullia off. “Don’t even worry about that. I lived in a brothel for five years, comments like that don’t faze me.”
She expels a breath and clicks out of the social media app. “Oh my goddesses. Good. . . that you don’t care about them I mean. It’s still shitty, guys being disgusting like that, but I’m glad you’re not, like, triggered.”
Shrugging I grab a tray and slide it along the edge to start piling food on. “It doesn’t matter where you go males are still all the same. Animals.” Turning and giving Asher a sweet smile, I say, “Except you, Asher. One of the good ones.”
He wraps a hand around Jullia and kisses the top of her head. I drop my smile and roll my eyes at them. Damn lovesick fools.
After we’ve got our food we sit in the same area we sat all last week.
The surrounding tables are mostly Asher’s friends or house-mates but they never join us.
I told Jullia and Asher they don’t have to always sit with me, but they both shrugged that off.
Even though I know Jullia has started to make some friends in her other classes.
If they’re not bothered then I will force myself not to be bothered as well. Asher fills me in on his weekend at the house. He hasn’t seen any sign of Thorne or the rest of the celestials and apparently neither has anyone else in his house.
Not that I give a single shit. I hadn’t wanted to reveal the fact that there’s poison in my veins but at least hopefully it’ll stop any more questions about my race.
And from what Hanna and Jullia have said everyone was cleared out right before Jullia threw the dagger at Thorne.
Meaning no one else knows we were poisoned.
I haven’t asked about the dagger or why Jullia has it, and I don’t think I’m going to. I don’t really want to know. I just want to finish this school and then go home.
Jullia drones on about the school work and I listen only barely.
I should have spent all weekend doing said work, but now I have a shit ton of papers to write and equations to solve and I need to profusely thank Nana and Ms. Elaycia for not putting me into an ordered school system.
At least next year I can pick the majority of my classes.
Jullia nudges my hand and I focus on her face. She gives me a look. “You ate everything, are you okay?”
I look down at my empty tray. My belly is full and I have more energy than I did all weekend, but I still feel like shit.
“You think I’ll get kicked out if I fail Magic History?”
Jullia blanches but it’s Asher who nonchalantly says, “Most definitely. Of all the classes that is the one you don’t want to fail.” Jullia smacks his shoulder as he chuckles. “Don’t worry about it, Mavyn. You still have the rest of the year, one bad grade on an assignment won’t fail you.”
I’m still not fully convinced but Jullia announces we better go so we put our trays away and start heading out.
It’s over cast today but the clouds aren’t thick enough for me to go without the umbrella.
At least Jullia hides underneath it with me.
She did the same thing last week too, saying I was lucky because at least I had a shield against the heat.
Asher parts ways as we make our way down the rest of the hall.
Other students are meandering in, and I catch a glimpse of dirty blond hair ducking in.
Crossing my fingers, I hope nothing happens.
Callahan wasn’t explicitly involved in anything.
All the drama happened between me, Thorne, and a bit of Darian – not including Castiel D’etre in the end.
All I remember of the devil was him leaning against the wall and then picking me up before offering me his blood.
I’d rather rip my own neck out than drink the blood of a devil ever again.
No offense to him or anything, he’s more or less left me alone out of all of the celestials, but trauma is a bitch.
Professor Asier isn’t here when we enter, and instead of taking the stairs closest to the door to our row, I pull Jullia to the other side so I don’t have to scoot past Callahan.
I can feel his eyes tracking us as we move, and Jullia says nothing about.
I’m sure she also wants to stay out of their sights after threatening and almost killing Thorne.
Nothing is said as I get to my seat and sit in it. I set my tablet and Jullia’s stylus on the desk and keep my eyes forward. Clearly luck isn’t on my side because Callahan crosses his arms as he leans back and fully turns his head towards me.
“Why don’t you have a notebook?”
He’s only loud enough for me, and possibly Jullia to hear. Jullia had offered to get me a notebook and some pens but that I fully shut down. I can’t exactly say no to toiletries or clothes because that’s a need, but taking notes on the tablet hasn’t been bad enough for me to ask for something else.
Clicking onto my notes tap, I open my Magic History folder and open a blank page. “Because I am a nobody vampire who was snatched by enforcers and given no notice or funds when I was shipped off to this school wearing only the clothes on my back.”
I write the date in the upper left hand corner and then click out of the page to open what should have been my finished essay. Instead I’m short three pages, a cited sources page, my intro paragraph, and it should be printed out.
Jullia pulls out her finished, printed essay from her backpack and sets it on top of her notebook. Then she glances at me and winces right as the door to the class shuts and we all face forward.
Professor Asier is late. . . only it isn’t Professor Asier it’s the motherfucking demigod.
And he’s staring straight at me with a goddamn smirk.
Jullia makes a noise in the back of her throat as he approaches the desk and places a briefcase on top of it. Then he proceeds to take off his jacket and roll the sleeves of his white button up. I swear every girl in here but for me and Jullia sigh at the action.
Callahan softly clears his throat but I don’t bother looking at him as the demigod slips his hands into his pants pockets and faces the class.
