Epilogue
Kendra sat with Derek’s mother in front of the roaring fire, enjoying the play of the light against the four stockings hanging from the mantel.
They’d come to spend Christmas with Derek’s parents and she’d been welcomed with open arms. Margaret had a stocking for her already with her name printed on it. Kendra had a family again.
It was hard to believe that her newfound happiness was due to a freak winter storm. She had the man of her dreams. A new family and a secret, Kendra smiled to herself and patted her still flat tummy.
She thought of the little pair of booties she’d wrapped and put under the tree for Derek. It was a special Christmas in more ways than one.
“When are you going to tell Derek, dear?” her mother-in-law asked curiously.
Kendra looked at her in surprise. “How did you know?”
“A mother always knows, dear. Keep that in mind when trying to keep secrets from me,” Margaret said with a twinkle in her eyes.
Kendra laughed and got up to hug her, then whispered, “He has a very special present under the tree.”
“What are you two whispering about in here?” Derek’s father asked suspiciously. “I won’t have any shenanigans from either of you. Remember your mother is still recovering.”
“Oh, pooh, Harry, I’m fine!” his wife exclaimed with a frown.
“Don’t you get sassy with me, little girl,” Harry admonished firmly.
“Get a room, you two!” Derek said with a blush.
“Derek!” Kendra said, swatting his midriff.
“You best watch yourself too, young lady,” he said with a grin.
She rolled her eyes… apparently it was going to be a very spanky Christmas.
