Chapter 11
CHAPTER ELEVEN
RYAN
THEN
T he Haven Cove Vipers needed to head up to our Bracken Ridge charter to help them out with a job, but because the drive was over five hours, we just spent the night up there and headed back home the following day. We were exhausted, starving and the only thing getting us through the last hour of the drive was stopping somewhere to get a burger and a beer.
Haz, Jay and I split away from the rest of the club when we reached Haven Cove because they all went straight back to the clubhouse but we decided to make a pit-stop at the diner. We sat in the red and white diner booth and ordered a burger each with a plate of fries and onion rings to share between us.
Jay had been quieter than usual today and he was continuously looking down at his phone. I watched as his fingers moved across the screen as he furrowed his brows.
“Jay, what’s going on?” I asked him.
He looked up from his phone to find Haz and I both looking at him from our side of the booth. “My sister. Apparently she’s gone out on a date tonight with some guy and now she’s not answering my messages.” He looked down at his phone again and then slammed it on the table in front of him.
“Wait a second, baby Davis went out with someone who wasn’t me?” Haz asked as he threw a fry into the air, trying to catch it with his mouth.
“Never in a million years would I let my sister near you, Haz.” Jay leaned over the table, pointing at Haz who only laughed in response.
“Who’d she go out with?” I asked. A strange feeling came over me knowing Lexi was on a date with someone Jay didn’t even know. I knew how protective Jay was of Lexi and I couldn’t help but feel protective of her too.
“I don’t know him. Lex said his name is Dean Harris. Apparently he comes into the cafe all the time begging for a date and she finally agreed to go out with him.”
“Harris? Are you serious?” Haz looked across the table with a frown on his face, not something we see often. I raised my eyebrow at him and Jay nodded, confirming the name.
“I went to high school with Harris, he’s a total douchebag. He thinks he’s God’s gift to women.” Haz leaned back against the window beside him and brought one foot up on the seat in front of him as he faced me.
“Oh yeah, and you don’t?” I laughed back at my best friend who stuck his middle finger up at me.
“Difference is, Ryan, I actually am God’s gift. I mean, look at me.” He ran his hand through his hair as I looked at Jay and rolled my eyes as we both laughed.
“Seriously though, Harris is the kind of guy who likes the chase. He did it all the time in high school and once he had sex with the girl, he was done with them.” Haz picked up the drink in front of him and took a sip as I looked over at Jay who had nothing but anger in his eyes as he picked his phone back up and started typing another message, probably to Lexi.
“He just ended it with them straight after sex?” I asked. If this was true, then we needed to get Lexi away from this asshole.
“I’m talking straight after, like within a minute after. He’s not the kind of guy I would want dating my sister, that’s for sure.”
“Where did you say they were for their date?” I asked Jay as he pulled out his wallet and chucked some cash on the table and before standing.
“I have no fucking idea, but I’m going to find her.” Jay walked out of the diner and I looked at Haz. We both stood and followed him out to our bikes.
“Jay, wait. I have an idea,” I said to him as he began putting on his helmet while he sat on his bike. “Invite them both to the party at the clubhouse tonight.”
“Party? We aren’t having a party?” Haz looked between Jay and I, his brows furrowed in confusion.
“We are now. Haz, head to the clubhouse and get the party started. Jay and I will go and get Lexi.” Haz raised one hand to his forehead and saluted me before turning on his bike and driving down the street.
“We’ll wait at your place for them to get home,” I said. Jay nodded at me and we both rode our bikes in the direction of the Davis house.
When we got there, we both pulled up in the driveway as Jay’s dad turned on the front porch light and headed out to greet us.
“Ryan, good to see you son.” He gave me a hug. Scotty had been around my whole life and was someone I considered an uncle so it was good to see him more now Jay was a Viper.
Jay headed inside the house to take a quick shower while I waited by our bikes in the driveway. I lit a cigarette and stayed leaning on my bike as a set of car headlights pulled over on the street in front of the house. I watched as Lexi spoke to the guy in the driver’s seat and they both reached to open their own doors. I scoffed under my breath at the fact the asshole didn’t even open her door for her.
They both walked up the pathway towards the front porch not noticing I was standing in the dark. I would have been hard to notice as it was pitch black outside and I was wearing all black clothes. The two of them stopped at the bottom of the porch steps and I watched as he tried to lean in to kiss Lexi, but she turned her head at the last second so that his lips landed on her cheek.
I laughed under my breath, maybe a little too loud, because Lexi She turned her head in my direction. She took a step back and turned her body to scan for where the sound came from.
“Ryan? Is that you?” she asked as she took another step towards me and away from Dean Harris.
“Hey, Lex.” I flicked my cigarette butt on the ground and twisted the toe of my shoe on top of it.
“What are you doing out here in the dark?” She crossed her arms against her chest. “Waiting for you, actually. Jay’s inside, we’re heading to a party and want you to come.” I walked towards the pair standing on the pathway and held my hand out to Harris. “Hey man, I’m Ryan,” I introduced myself and he looked at me and shook my hand.
“I don’t want to come to your party, Ryan. Thanks anyway.” She turned away from me and went to pull Harris back towards his car.
“You can bring your boyfriend, open invitation,” I yelled in their direction.
Dean was the one who turned back towards me. “A Viper party? Can I bring a plus one?” I watched Lexi look up at him with a frown, and it took everything in me not to punch him right there. He was Lexi’s plus one but now he wanted to bring someone else?
“Sure man, bring whoever you want.”
His face lit up in a smile and Lexi pushed him towards the car. They spoke for a few moments before he got in the driver’s door and turned the car on but he didn’t start driving; he stayed parked as Lexi walked back towards me.
“What game are you trying to play here, Ryan?” She glared up at me. She was in heels so she stood taller than usual but she still only reached my chin.
“No idea what you’re talking about, Lex.” I smirked at her and she crossed her arms across her chest and took a step closer to me.
“Is Jay in on this too? Since when is a Viper party an open invite?”
“We just want to get to know your new boyfriend, make him feel welcome.” I took my helmet off my bike as Jay walked out the front door towards us.
“You.” Lexi turned her anger towards her brother as he approached us.
“What was with the nonstop texting? You both realize I am an adult, right? Not a child. I can date whoever I want.”
Jay went to argue back with her but I put my hand up against his chest and spoke before he could.
“Just come to the party, Lexi. I promise, we’ll back off.”
“Fine,” she muttered before stomping back down the pathway and into Harris’ car, hopefully to head towards the party.
“Why did you say that? I’m not backing off,” Jay said to me as we both put on our helmets and sat on our bikes.
“Neither am I. Trust me, Jay, they won’t be leaving the party together.” I smirked at him and turned my engine on.
Jay rode beside me the whole way to the clubhouse and when we arrived, I could see Haz did his job well. The party was in full swing; the place was crowded with club members, girls and everyone’s friends. The music was pumping and everyone had a beer in hand. No one would know that only an hour ago this party wasn’t even organized.
I made my way over to a group of girls we knew well because they came to all of our parties and slept around with the members every time. I let them know my plan for the night and when Lexi and Dean pulled up at the party, I eagerly pointed him out to the girls and let them know that he’s their target. I knew Lexi would probably kill me for this, but she needed to see that this guy doesn’t care about her; he just cared about getting laid.
