Chapter 27
CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
LEXI
THEN
I woke up and went to cuddle into Ryan’s chest, but when I rolled over and pulled him closer to me, it felt too soft. I opened my eyes and realized he wasn’t next to me and instead he had put a pillow in his spot. I checked the time on my phone. I had slept in much later than usual and it was already mid-morning. I stood from the bed and grabbed a pair of black track pants and one of Ryan’s shirts off the floor. I headed over to my bedroom window to see if Ryan’s bike was still parked in the driveway or if they had already left for the day.
As I looked outside I spotted three bikes sitting in the driveway; knowing that one would be Jay’s, one would be Ryan’s and if I had to guess who the other one belonged to, it would be Haz. As I made my way downstairs into the kitchen to make myself a coffee, I didn’t pass by the boys anywhere in the house and I couldn’t see them in the backyard either, which meant they were in the garage. I walked out the front door and towards them. When I reached the open garage door, I noticed they had my car in there with the hood open and all three boys were looking into the engine. It had been sitting in the garage since the night it broke down but no one had time to fix it for me yet and they didn’t really need to because Ryan drove me everywhere anyway.
“What’s the verdict, boys? Broken or fixable?” I asked as I leaned against the garage door. Jay was standing closest to the edge and poked his head out from behind the bonnet. He waved his hand by his throat to tell me that the car was broken for good.
Ryan walked around Jay and pushed his head down slightly before walking towards me. “Hi,” he said simply as he put his arms around my waist and pulled me close to him and gave me a kiss.
“Morning, I missed you when I woke up.” I wrapped my arms around his neck as he stayed in front of me and we could hear Jay and Haz arguing in the background.
“I tried to wake you but you pushed me away. We had a spare morning, so we wanted to see if we could save your car.” He laughed as my jaw dropped. I didn’t remember him trying to wake me and why would I have pushed him away even if he did? But then again, he did keep me up last night, so I was exhausted.
“So, my car can’t be saved?”
He turned to walk back towards the hood of the car. I followed him and jumped up to sit on the work bench behind the boys.
“We’re still looking over it and seeing what we can do, but it looks like the whole engine needs replacing which means it might be better just to get a new car baby Davis,” Haz answered. He grabbed the coffee from my hands and took a sip.
“Please, help yourself, Haz,” I said sarcastically but he took it as an invitation and continued to drink my coffee while Ryan and Jay laughed at him.
“I’ve got a spare car you can use in the meantime if you need it. You also have three personal drivers right here.” Ryan winked at me.
Jay scoffed. “Speak for yourself, she’s your girlfriend.”
“Yeah and I’m your sister, Jayden.”
Haz and Ryan brought their hands to their mouths and snickered and muttered something about Jay being in trouble.
“I’ll take you to get the spare car this afternoon. We’ll be down here a bit longer.” Ryan stood between my legs and I reached down and kissed his head before he helped me off the bench. He kissed me one more time before I went back in the house and left them to play mechanics in the garage.
* * *
A few hours had passed when I heard the sound of the bike engines turn on from the driveway. I looked up from my book as Ryan walked into my bedroom and kicked the door shut before pulling off his shirt and wiping it over his face. He had traces of car oil up his arms from working on my car and he adjusted his hat that he was wearing backwards to keep his hair off his face. He came over and leaned over me on the bed, putting one hand on either side of my body before moving my book to the side. I put my hand on his chest and felt the wetness of the sweat and I pushed him off.
“I’m going to have a quick shower and then let’s go get that spare car for you.”
“How about a long shower?” I smirked at him and he caught on to what I meant. We walked across the hallway and by the time I turned the shower on, Ryan was already undressed and then went to help me out of my clothes.
We were riding down the streets of Haven Cove towards Ryan’s dads house just as the sun was starting to set in the sky since we spent so long in the shower earlier and let the time get away from us. Ryan had a black sweatshirt underneath his usual cut and I had another one of his sweatshirts on to try and keep the cool night air off our skin as the sun took the warmth with it. I felt Ryan’s back stiffen against my chest and he kept checking his mirror more often than what he usually would. He grabbed my hands that were around his waist and pulled them tighter against him. He was acting strange. I had been on the back of his bike so many times and he had never driven like this. I turned my head to look at our surroundings and that’s when I noticed another bike just behind us.
“Ryan, who is that?” I yelled in his ear so he could hear me over the engine and the wind.
“I don’t know, Lex, but it’s not a Viper.” He drove the bike with one hand as he pulled his phone out from his pocket and passed it to me.
“Call Jay or Haz, tell them where we are.” I didn’t say anything back to him. I could feel how tense he was so I knew I needed to just listen to him right now. I kept hold of his waist with one hand and called Jay.
“Bro, we’ve been waiting for you for ages,” Jay answered the phone after two rings and I took a deep breath before answering him.
“Jay, it’s Lexi.”
“Lex? What’s going on?”
“Ryan told me to call you. I think we’re being followed.” My voice was shaky. I still wasn’t exactly sure what was happening but as I turned around the bike was getting closer to us.
“What? Where are you? Who’s following you?” These questions came from Haz, which meant we were on loudspeaker and I wondered who else was nearby, listening to our conversation.
“We are on Point Road. He’s getting closer.” I watched Ryan check over his shoulder again as he reached behind him to check his gun was in the back of his pants like it usually was.
“We’re on our way, Lex.”
I heard multiple bike engines start through the phone just before Jay hung up. I put Ryan’s phone in my pocket before holding on tighter to him.
Each time Ryan drove faster, the other bike did too. They weren’t being subtle which meant they wanted us to know we were being followed. Ryan took a sudden turn down another street to try and lose him and suddenly in front of us were five other bikes that all belonged to Vipers. They made space in the middle for Ryan to ride between them and they drove past our bike before making a line again, heading straight for the bike behind us. Ryan turned the bike around just in time for us to see the person following us turn around and speed off, only now he was the one being followed. Once he reached the ‘Welcome to Haven Cove’ sign, the Vipers all pulled over onto the side of the road and let him go. The thing I couldn’t get out of my mind was the Horsemen logo on the back of his leather cut as he rode away.
