chapter 51
Chapter 54 - An Answer He Didn't Expect
The silence stretched.
One second.
Five.
Ten.
Aarav remained exactly where he was.
On his knees.
Waiting.
His heart pounded so hard he could hear it.
Kavya still hadn't spoken.
Not a single word.
Not forgiveness.
Not rejection.
Nothing.
And somehow that silence felt worse than anything.
Finally-
Kavya moved.
Slowly.
Carefully.
As though afraid of shattering whatever fragile thing was happening between them.
"Aarav."
Her voice was quiet.
His head lifted immediately.
Hope flashed across his face.
Small.
Desperate.
Kavya saw it.
And for the first time, it hurt.
Because once upon a time, she had looked at him exactly the same way.
Waiting for affection.
Waiting for attention.
Waiting for him.
"Aarav..."
She swallowed.
"You should stand up."
His chest tightened.
That wasn't an answer.
But he obeyed anyway.
Slowly rising to his feet.
Rainwater still dripped from his sleeves onto the floor.
Neither noticed.
Neither cared.
Kavya looked away first.
Because looking directly at him felt strangely difficult.
Especially after hearing everything he had said.
Everything she had wanted to hear years ago.
Years.
The thought made her chest ache.
"You said you love me."
The words hung between them.
Aarav nodded immediately.
"I do."
No hesitation.
No uncertainty.
Just certainty.
Kavya closed her eyes briefly.
A small, sad smile touched her lips.
"Do you know what's cruel?"
Aarav frowned.
She laughed softly.
Not from happiness.
From exhaustion.
"I spent years waiting to hear that."
His stomach dropped.
Every word felt like a knife.
"I waited."
Her gaze lowered.
"I waited on anniversaries."
A pause.
"Birthdays."
Another.
"Vacations."
Her voice softened.
"Ordinary weekdays."
Aarav couldn't look away.
Because every word was true.
"I kept thinking maybe tomorrow would be different."
Kavya smiled sadly.
"Maybe next month."
"Maybe next year."
The apartment felt painfully quiet.
"I loved you so much, Aarav."
She said it so easily, but her heart twisted from inside making her each breath difficult.
She Wasn't looking emotional at all.
She was looking exhausted.
That somehow made it worse.
"I loved you enough to keep hoping."
Aarav's eyes burned.
"Kavya-"
She shook her head gently.
Stopping him.
"No."
For the first time, she needed to finish.
And he needed to listen.
So he did.
Silently.
"I always prayed for for your good before me."
Her voice remained calm.
"I celebrated moments most wives would consider normal."
A faint laugh escaped her.
"You ate dinner with me once and I was happy for a months."
Aarav's chest tightened painfully.
God.
He remembered.
And now he hated that she remembered too.
Kavya looked down at her hands.
"Do you know what finally broke me?"
Aarav felt fear creep into his chest.
She met his eyes.
"It wasn't one big thing."
His breath caught.
"It was realizing I was becoming someone I didn't recognize."
A pause.
"Someone who spent every day asking why she wasn't enough."
Silence.
Aarav felt something inside him crack.
Because he had done that.
Not intentionally.
But he had.
The strongest woman he knew had spent years questioning her worth because of him.
"Kavya..."
His voice sounded broken.
She looked at him.
And for the first time, he saw how tired she truly was.
Not angry.
Not bitter.
Just tired.
"I believe you're sorry."
The words startled him.
His eyes widened.
"I do."
She nodded.
"I believe every word you said."
Hope flickered.
Very bright.
Then her next words extinguished it.
"But that doesn't erase what happened."
Aarav froze.
The hope remained.
But now it hurt.
Kavya took a slow breath.
"I don't know what to do with your apology."
Honest.
Painfully honest.
"I don't know what to do with your love."
Another pause.
"Because the part of me that spent years waiting for it..."
Her voice trembled slightly, she slowly touch her cheat with of her hand.
"...isn't here anymore."
The words hit harder than anything else.
Aarav flinched, his hands were shivering again.
As though struck.
Kavya saw it.
And her heart hurt despite herself.
Because she wasn't trying to punish him.
She was simply telling the truth.
For years she had stood where he was standing now.
Asking.
Waiting.
Hoping.
Eventually-
hope had run out.
Tears filled Aarav's eyes again.
But.....
it's Too late.
The fear that had haunted him for months suddenly stood directly in front of him.
Not losing her physically.
Losing the version of her that once loved him without limits.
"Kavya..."
His voice barely worked.
She looked away.
Unable to bear the expression on his face.
For a long moment neither spoke.
Then finally-
very quietly-
Kavya said,
"I don't hate you."
Aarav looked up immediately.
His pulse quickened.
"I honestly don't want you to suffer either"
"I want you to live happily.... a good life"
Silence.
Her eyes met his.
Soft.
Conflicted.
Honest.
"But i don't want to be the part of your life anymore"
"I am really tired"
Hearing this from kavya, Aarav felt like his heart was being attack by sharp knife one after another.
It was so painful.
Aarav let out a small smirk.
Not on kavya
But on himself.
A life without kavya.
It's just a torture.
He would rather prefer to give up on that life.
The words settled between them.
Not rejection.
Not forgiveness.
Something far more uncertain.
Aarav stared at her.
And for the first time since their separation-
he understood that loving her wasn't enough.
Apologizing wasn't enough.
Regretting wasn't enough.
If he wanted another chance-
he would have to earn something much harder than forgiveness.
He would have to earn her trust.
Again.
