Epilogue
Emiko
Something’s up with Rhett and I don’t know what it is. He told me to dress casually and then don’t come out of the house until someone comes to get me. Oh, and don’t peek out of the windows. It’s sounds like something that should be easy. But it’s not. I don’t even have the kids with me to keep me company.
I know there’s something going on outside. I need to know…this isn’t fair. I sit down and pout, but there’s no one to see me throw my mini tantrum.
As I’m wallowing in my self-pity, the front door opens. And in walks my dad.
“What are you doing here?” I say to him.
“I’m here to put the blindfold on you and lead you into your future.”
I have no idea what my dad is talking about.
“Are you feeling okay? Do you need a doctor?”
My dad laughs and puts the blindfold on me. And leads me outside. I can smell food and my tummy growls. It’s quiet but I know there’s people around because I can hear giggling.
“I’m so proud to be your dad. I couldn’t ask for a better daughter,” my dad says softly to me as he takes the blindfold off.
I blink a few times and see Rhett down on one knee in front of me.
“I knew the moment I saw you that you were someone special. It took me a little while to get you to be on the same page as me. But we’re there and I’m never letting you go. Marry me.”
“Say yes!” Kaito and Miyuki cheer.
“Yes.” I smile as he puts the ring on my finger and kisses me.
“I love you so damn much.”
“We love you,” I whisper in his ear and wait for him to realize what I said.
“We as in you and the twins?”
“We as in me, the twins and a peanut.”
I see the tears shining in his eyes as he drops down and kisses my belly. I hear everyone cheer and start to crowd around us. I finally get a look at the food that’s spread out.
“This is my engagement gift to you and Rhett,” Adonis says to me. “I researched Japanese foods and meanings and then I checked with your parents. They helped me make everything you see as authentic as I could get it.”
I hug Adonis. “Thank you. This means so much to me.”
I start grabbing a little of everything on the table. There’s Sea Bream or Tai-meshi , Red Rice or Sekihan, Unagi or Grilled Eel, and of course miso soup.
“Mommy?” Kaito says as he holds my hand.
“Yes?” I smile at him.
“Did you know that Rhett is going to be our daddy now? He said that Daddy is always our daddy. But now if we want, he will be our daddy too. Miyuki and I talked and we want Rhett to be our daddy.”
It takes me a minute to understand what Kaito is saying. But I finally understand. Seth will always be a part of my babies. But Rhett is our future. And I love our future.
