Chapter Three
Kaylie
Igrab another box out of the back of my car. “I promise that I’m going to find a house soon. I don’t know if Montana is the right place for me yet though.”
Gayle rolls her eyes from her front porch. “When did you get commitment issues?”
Eighteen months ago when I left Dylan in bed.
A month ago when I ended the engagement.
The question has more than one answer, but I don’t want to give her either. That would just lead to another discussion about how she thinks I’m having a midlife crisis even though I’m only thirty.
Gayle sighs and scurries past me to grab another box from the car. “You can stay with me as long as you like. You don’t have to go racing around and trying to find a home of your own if you don’t want to yet. I’ve got more than enough room here.”
“No offense, but we grew up attached at the hip.” I head into the spare bedroom off of the living room, setting the box down on the floor and spinning to face her. “I don’t want to spend the rest of my adult life living with you.”
She clasps a hand to her heart. “I am a delight.”
“Yeah, sure. And I spend my days singing happy little songs and doing fun little dances.”
Her head tilts to the side as she studies me. “You know, I would believe that. You do spend your days working in family medicine. I bet you whip out some great dances for the children.”
“Every now and then.” I lead the way back outside, grabbing another box from the car.
She follows me, taking out the last box and slamming the trunk shut. “I think you should actually give some thought to staying in Montana long term. New York never suited you.”
