Chapter 21 #2
Seren says, "That sounds like the kind of plan someone makes right before getting hunted through cursed woods."
"It's still a plan," Valerius says.
"No," Professor Thorne says. "If Valentina leaves the academy before she can control her signature, every old ward between here and the outer boundaries may react. You would light a trail."
A trail. For Remnants. For Voss. For Ancient Masters.
My chest tightens. "So I'm trapped," I say. Valerius's Shadowflame stirs.
My mother's face softens. "For now, you are safest where the academy's older protections still recognize you."
I look at the kneeling flames. "Recognize me as what?"
Another impact slams through the chamber. The blue flames gutter.
Professor Thorne steps toward the sealed door. "We cannot stay here arguing."
"What do we do?" Seren asks.
My mother turns to me. Not Thorne. Not Valerius. Me. Something about that steadies my spine. "We need to make the academy hide you."
I blink. "What?"
"The academy recognized you," she says. "The old stones responded. If they answer you, they can shield you from council detection."
"I don't know how to ask an academy for anything." I answer honestly.
Valerius's hand finds mine. "You asked vines to burn."
"I didn't ask. I panicked." I remind him.
"You asked me not to leave." He reminds me, with a soft smile.
I sigh. "That's different."
His eyes hold mine. "Is it?" The bond warms. The room seems to breathe with us.
Professor Thorne steps closer. "Starfire answers emotion, but not emotion alone. Intention guides it."
My mother nods. "When you unraveled the Remnant, you did not simply fear it. You wanted to undo what threatened you."
I swallow. "And now?"
"Now," she says, "you need to want concealment."
Seren lets out a shaky laugh. "Wonderful. Just casually ask ancient forbidden magic to make the castle play hide-and-seek."
Another boom. Closer. The wards above the door crackle. Valerius's grip tightens.
"I can't do this with them pounding on the door," I say.
His voice lowers. "Then don't listen to them."
"How?" I look up at him.
"Listen to me." He whispers. My breath catches.
He turns fully toward me, placing himself between my sight and the trembling entrance.
His hands come to my shoulders, grounding me.
"Look at me." I do. His eyes are no longer black with rage.
They are hazel again. Dark gold and green and shadow, focused completely on mine.
"Breathe." The chamber shakes. I flinch. His hands tighten. "With me."
I try. I inhale, his breath moves with mine. I exhale, the bond opens, not wild, not painful, but steady. A dark path through the chaos.
"Good," he says quietly. The word lands warm inside me. Another impact. I don't look away. Valerius's voice drops lower. "You aren't the chamber. You aren't the council. You aren't what your mother sealed or what Voss wants to uncover." My throat tightens. "You are Valentina."
The Starfire beneath my skin stirs.
"You choose," he says. The words reach deeper than any spell. I close my eyes.
The hidden chamber appears inside me, not as stone, but as warmth.
Old flame. Dust. Blue torches. White-gold basin.
The sovereign mark beneath my feet. I feel the academy around it—vast, ancient, wounded.
Towers and corridors, classrooms and wards, portraits and doors, glasshouses and galleries and buried rooms no student has seen in centuries.
I feel all of it as something waking when I touch it, a sleeping creature opening one eye.
My heart pounds. I don't want to be seen, not by Voss, not by Remnants, not by the old law, not yet. The Starfire listens. Hide me, I think. The chamber trembles. No! Not me, my eyes open. Valerius watches me, unmoving. Understanding flickers through his face before I say anything.
"Hide us," I whisper.
The sovereign mark ignites. White-gold light races across the floor, hitting the walls, climbing the stones in branching lines like stars learning how to become roots.
Valerius's Shadowflame flares from his wrists and joins it, black fire weaving through gold, not consuming, not fighting.
Together. The word pulses through the bond.
The room answers. The blue torches vanish.
Darkness swallows the chamber. Seren yelps.
Then the walls begin to glow from within.
Like starlight trapped under stone. The pounding stops.
Silence falls beyond the sealed passage.
Professor Thorne crosses to the door and places his palm against it. His brows lift. "They passed us."
Seren blinks. "What do you mean, passed us?"
"They no longer sense this chamber." Thorne says.
My mother looks at me with awe and fear tangled together. "You folded the ward."
"I what?" I ask in shock.
Professor Thorne turns slowly. "You did not block detection. You convinced the academy this room is not where it was." I stare at him.
Seren points at the floor. "I need everyone to know that sentence made my soul leave my body."
Valerius doesn't speak. I look at him. His hands are still on my shoulders. His Shadowflame is still braided with my Starfire across the walls. He looks at the glowing stone, then at me. Through the bond, I feel it. Wonder. My chest aches.
Pain slices through my wrist. I gasp. The light flickers. Valerius catches me before I fall.
"What?" he demands.
My mark burns white. The sovereign symbol beneath us flashes once. Then a voice enters the chamber. Not from the walls, not from the flame. from somewhere far older. A woman's voice broken by centuries, blood of the Starborne.
My mother stops breathing. Professor Thorne goes still. Valerius pulls me closer.
The voice continues. The seal breaks. The hunters wake.
The shadow finds the flame. The white-gold teaching flame rises higher, shaping itself into a figure made of light.
A woman stands inside the basin. She wears a crown of fire like the one I saw in the shattered mirrors.
My heart stops. Her eyes are silver-gold. Like mine were in the reflection.
"Who are you?" I whisper.
The woman turns her head toward me. Her face is both familiar and not.
"The last queen they burned," she says. The chamber falls silent.
Seren whispers, "Queen?"
The light-woman looks at Valerius. Her expression softens with grief. "Shadowbound blood," she says. "Still standing beside us after all this time."
Valerius's face hardens. "I stand beside her."
