Chapter 22 #2
Professor Thorne's voice enters the space. "Choose a simple intention."
"Like hide us?" I ask.
"Smaller." Thorne says.
Seren whispers, "Please don't accidentally move the room again."
I close my eyes. Smaller. Not war. Not sovereign marks.
Not Ancient Masters in the mountains. Not sacrifice.
Not Valerius bleeding. Not him being dragged from me at sundown.
The memory tries to rise anyway. His hand leaving mine.
The ache. The empty bed. The silence when they blocked him. My Starfire flares.
"Valentina," Thorne says sharply.
I inhale. Valerius's voice touches the bond.
Stay with me.
It grounds me. I focus on the flame. I need a small intention. Warmth, the thought comes gently. Not fire that destroys. Not light that exposes. Warmth. The teaching flame rises. A thread of gold slips from it and curls around my fingers.
I gasp but don't pull back. It's warm and soft... Mine.
The flame changes shape, blooming into a tiny star above the basin. Seren's breath catches.
Professor Thorne murmurs, "Good."
My mother covers her mouth. I open my eyes. The tiny star floats over the iron basin, white-gold and trembling. It's no larger than a candle flame, but something about it makes the room feel less cold. I did that. Me.
I look at Valerius. His expression is unreadable, but through the bond, I feel him. Pride, so strong it almost knocks me over. My throat tightens. The tiny star flickers wildly.
Professor Thorne snaps, "Focus." The star steadies.
Seren whispers, "I'm very proud of you, but I will say it quietly so you don't explode." A laugh leaves me again. The star wobbles.
Valerius says, "Stop making her laugh."
Seren says, "You stop looking at her like that."
His gaze cuts to her. "Like what?"
"Like she hung the actual stars." Seren returns his gaze.
The tiny star flares. My face burns. Valerius looks away. The bond warms with embarrassment. His.
Professor Thorne pinches the bridge of his nose. "This is going to be unbearable."
My mother's lips tremble. For a second, I think she might smile. Then the chamber shakes again. The star above the basin sputters.
Professor Thorne turns sharply toward the sealed passage. "They're searching." Valerius is already moving toward me. "Stay where you are," Thorne orders.
He stops. I look at the tiny star. Focus, warmth but the impacts outside continue, distant and rhythmic.
Council magic probing old corridors. Voss looking for the room the academy hid from her.
Voss who sent the separation order. Voss who smiled while I collapsed.
Voss who may have let the Remnant through.
The star flashes brighter. Not from warmth now, from anger. The iron basin cracks.
My mother moves quickly. "Valentina, pull back."
"I'm trying." I panic. The star grows. White-gold light fills the basin.
Professor Thorne's voice sharpens. "Mr. Draven." Valerius steps forward. "Not touch," Thorne says. "Ground."
Valerius stops at my side but doesn't touch me. The restraint costs him. I feel it. His voice lowers. "Valentina."
The star trembles. "I'm angry," I whisper.
"I know." He says softly.
"She did this." I say my voice laced with pain.
"We don't know yet." He tell me.
"She hurt us." I say louder.
His jaw tightens. "Yes." The agreement feeds the flame. The basin groans. Valerius's eyes flash. "But if you lose control now, she wins." My anger stutters. He steps closer, voice lower. "She wants proof you are dangerous." The flame trembles. "Don't give it to her."
My breath shakes. "She already thinks I am."
"Then prove her wrong." The words cut through the heat. Prove her wrong. The star above the basin shrinks slightly.
I inhale. Warmth. A fire that holds, not burns.
The Starfire pulls back slowly, reluctantly.
The cracked basin stops groaning. The tiny star steadies again, smaller now but brighter at the center.
Professor Thorne exhales. My mother's eyes shine.
Valerius doesn't move. His shoulder is close to mine, but not touching.
Still, I feel him. The star floats above the basin.
Then, gently, it drifts toward him. Valerius goes still.
"What is it doing?" Seren whispers.
Professor Thorne answers softly. "Following the intention."
Warmth. The star stops in front of Valerius's chest, hovering over the place where his heart beats beneath his black shirt. His Shadowflame stirs, curiously. The little star touches him. Valerius inhales sharply. Black fire blooms from his wrist, curling around the star.
For one terrifying second, I think his magic will consume it. Instead, his shadowflame cups it. Protects it. The two flames hover together between us, white-gold and black-red, braided but distinct. Balanced. The chamber goes silent.
Professor Thorne whispers, "There." My mother looks like she might cry again.
Seren's voice is small. "Is that good?"
"No," Thorne says. My stomach drops. He steps closer, eyes fixed on the paired flames. "It is extraordinary."
Valerius's gaze lifts to mine. The bond opens.
Not with words, with feeling. We both understand at once.
This is what the queen meant. Starborne and Shadowbound.
Not one ruling the other. Not one sacrificed for the other.
Balance. My Starfire doesn't need him because it is weak.
His Shadowflame doesn't answer mine because he is trapped.
They know each other. They remember an old purpose but what we choose inside that purpose is ours.
The thought settles through me like light. Valerius hears it. His eyes soften.
He sends.
Ours,
I answer.
Ours.
The flames pulse once. Then vanish. The chamber plunges into ordinary torchlight. I sway. Valerius catches me instantly, Thorne's no-touch rule forgotten by everyone at once. This time, no one tells him to step away.
Professor Thorne is staring at the place where the flames disappeared. "This changes strategy."
Valerius keeps one arm around me. "How?"
"The queen said devotion alone will not save her." Thorne looks at us. "But balance might."
