Chapter 23
The passage beneath Arcana is older than fear. I feel it in the stones. Not in the way I feel Valerius through the bond, warm and dark and close at my side. Not in the way Starfire sits beneath my skin now, awake and listening, like a second pulse waiting for a reason to burn.
This is different.
The passage feels ancient in the bones of the academy. It is narrow and low, carved out of black rock that glitters faintly where old magic veins run through it. Blue flames burn in iron sconces along the walls, but they don't flicker as we pass. They lean. Toward me.
Everything notices me now.
The walls. The flames. The shadows. The dead queen's warning still ringing somewhere behind my ribs. Three nights. The Ancient Masters are coming. They will try to make me sacrifice the boy. My hand tightens around Valerius's. His fingers answer immediately, locking with mine.
I don't have to look at him to know he heard enough of that thought. "Stop," he says quietly.
Professor Thorne walks ahead of us, one hand lifted, tracing ward symbols through the air as we move.
Seren follows beside me, her face still pale but set with stubborn determination.
She has one hand pressed beneath her nose, where dried blood still marks what she gave to protect me from the Remnant.
I look at her and anger stirs hot under my skin again. She almost got hurt because of me.
No. Not almost! She did get hurt, because of what I am, because of what hunts me, because of a seal I never knew existed and a bloodline I never asked to carry.
Valerius's voice cuts low beside me. "Don't start blaming yourself."
I look at him sharply. "I didn't say anything."
"You didn't need to." His gaze sharpens.
Seren glances between us. "That is going to be very inconvenient when you two are trying to have private brooding sessions."
Valerius says, "I don't brood."
Professor Thorne doesn't turn around. "You do."
Seren points at his back. "See? Academic confirmation."
Valerius's jaw tightens. Despite everything, my mouth curves. The tiny moment of almost-normal breaks too quickly. The passage trembles above us. Dust slips from the ceiling.
Seren whispers, "Please tell me that was normal old-tunnel behavior."
Professor Thorne stops, palm pressed to the wall. "It was not."
"Wonderful." She rolls her eyes.
Valerius shifts closer to me. "What is it?" I ask.
Thorne's gaze stays on the stone. "Council search pulses. They are sweeping the east side of the academy."
My stomach drops. "Already?"
"They know we moved." Thorne confirms.
Valerius's voice is cold. "Voss knows."
Thorne looks back at him. "Possibly." Valerius gives him a look. Thorne exhales. "Likely."
The passage trembles again. This time, the Starfire beneath my wrist stirs in answer. A small thread of white-gold light flickers under my sleeve. Valerius sees it. So does Seren.
Professor Thorne's eyes narrow. "Control," he says.
"I know." I nod.
"No, you are frightened." Thorne says, seeing right through me.
"I'm also aware." I remind him.
"Awareness is not control." He informs me.
I glare at his back. "Does professor training require you to make every sentence exhausting?"
Seren whispers, "Yes."
Valerius's thumb moves once over my hand. Amusement brushes the bond. The white-gold thread settles.
Professor Thorne notices without turning around. "Better." I hate that praise from him works.
The passage curves sharply, climbing upward now.
The air changes. Dust gives way to the scent of old paper, cold wax, and something metallic beneath it.
The east archive. I have been there before, but never from beneath.
Students use the upper archive for branch histories, bloodline charts, spell theory, and old legal records professors like to pretend aren't boring enough to kill, but beneath it, according to my mother, is the Starling family vault.
Where my father may be. Where the seal key waits. The thing holding the deepest layer of my magic closed. The thought makes my skin crawl. A key to me. An object outside my own body that somehow has power over what I am allowed to become.
Valerius feels that too. His anger moves through the bond like black fire behind glass. I look at him. His expression is forward-facing and controlled, but the line of his mouth is cruel. "Don't kill my father," I whisper.
Seren's eyes widen.
Professor Thorne stops walking.
Valerius looks at me. "What a specific thing to say."
"You're thinking it." I look at him.
"I think many things." He tries to ease the thought.
"You think loudly." A smile starts to form on my mouth.
His eyes narrow. "Maybe you should stop listening."
"I'm not trying to." I admit. His mouth curves.
Then his expression darkens. "I won't kill him." I hold his gaze. He adds, "Unless he gives me a reason."
"Valerius." I hit his shoulder
He gasps jokingly. "What? That was restraint."
Seren mutters, "Terrifying, but technically true."
Professor Thorne continues walking. "No one kills anyone in the archive."
Valerius says, "That sounds like a rule made by someone who has never met Alaric Starling." My chest tightens. He feels it and immediately regrets the words. I know because his thumb stills against my hand. "I'm sorry," he says.
Seren nearly trips. Professor Thorne actually turns his head.
Valerius looks irritated by all of us. "Don't make it an event."
My throat aches. I squeeze his hand. "I won't."
The apology matters more than it should. Maybe because he doesn't give them easily. Maybe because he's learning where words cut. Maybe because, after everything, he's trying.
The passage ends at a wall of dark stone carved with a starling bird in flight. Its wings are spread over a crescent moon, and beneath it, three branch symbols are etched in a neat row. Tempest. Veil. Aether. No fourth. The absence feels deliberate now. Like an insult.
Professor Thorne presses his palm against the carving. Nothing happens. His brows draw together.
Seren leans closer. "Is it supposed to do something?"
"Yes." Thorne tries another symbol.
The stone remains sealed. Valerius steps forward. "Move."
Thorne gives him a sharp look. "Draven force is not the answer to every locked door." Valerius lifts one hand. Black flame coils around his fingers. The starling carving trembles. Professor Thorne sighs and steps aside. "Try not to collapse the archive."
"Try not to sound hopeful." Valerius places his hand against the stone.
Shadowflame spreads from his palm, dark veins crawling over the carved bird. For one heartbeat, nothing happens. Then my wrist burns. I gasp. The starling's carved eye turns white-gold. Valerius's Shadowflame recoils slightly, not from rejection. From recognition.
The stone door whispers. Starborne blood and Shadowbound flame.
Professor Thorne goes still.
Seren whispers, "Every door in this school is nosier than I am."
The stone splits open. A narrow gap appears, revealing darkness beyond. Valerius looks at me. "Together?" he asks.
The word feels different now. A vow disguised as a question. I nod. "Together."
We step through the opening into the lowest level of the east archive.
It's enormous. Far larger than it should be beneath the academy.
Shelves rise into shadowed heights, packed with books chained to iron rails.
Floating lanterns drift between stacks, their flames blue and dim.
Dust hangs in the air like old snow. The ceiling arches above us in ribs of dark wood and silver metal, and along every beam, I see carved warnings in languages I don't know.
The moment I enter, books begin to move.
They shift on shelves, spines turning outward, chains rattling softly.
Titles flash in gold and black. Erased Bloodlines.
On the Purge of Unregulated Fire. Draven Service Records.
The Fourth Branch: Heresy or Origin. Sovereign Flame and the Collapse of Old Law.
My breath catches.
Professor Thorne's face drains of color. "Those books are not supposed to show themselves."
Valerius stares at one title longer than the others. Draven Service Records. His hand tightens around mine. I feel the conflict inside him. He wants to pull it free. He wants to burn it. He wants to know. He's terrified to know.
My chest aches.
Professor Thorne snaps, "Do not engage the archive."
Seren blinks. "Engage how? Are the books flirting with us?"
"The archive responds to attention." Thorne sharpens his gaze.
"Then I hate it here." Seren sighs.
A sound echoes from the far end of the archive. A voice. My father's. "Amara?"
Every part of me freezes. Valerius goes still beside me, his Shadowflame vanishing into his skin so quickly the air seems colder without it.
Professor Thorne lifts one hand. Wait. The word is silent, but clear.
We move between the shelves, slow and careful.
The archive seems to hold its breath as we pass.
Books continue turning toward me, but quieter now, like they too are listening.
We reach a circular clearing at the heart of the archive.
A black door stands there, set into no wall at all.
Freestanding. Impossible. Its surface is carved with Starling symbols and old ward lines. At the center is a circular lock shaped like an open eye.
My father stands before it.
Alaric Starling's robe is half-buttoned, his hair disheveled in a way I have never seen.
He looks less like the cold, distant man who sat at breakfast tables measuring my existence like a legal inconvenience and more like someone chased by the consequences of his own choices.
In his hand is a small silver case. My mark burns. The seal key.
My father turns sharply. His eyes find me. Then Valerius. Then our joined hands. His expression shuts down. The familiar coldness returns, but this time I see the fear underneath it.
"Valentina," he says. I step forward before Valerius can. The bond pulls, warning. My father's gaze flicks to the movement. "You should not be here."
I laugh once. The sound is bitter and raw. "I have heard that my entire life." His face tightens.
