Chapter 29

The Eternal Flame reaches for my heart. Every strand reaches toward the colourless mark beneath my ribs. Toward Aurelia. Valerius pulls me against him as the floor collapses.

"Move!" Luc's shout disappears beneath the roar.

The dark river explodes upward. Black water rises in a wall behind us, carrying the last sparks of the spirits who crossed.

It crashes against the white-gold fire and fills the Hall with steam that smells of iron, ashes, and rain over graves.

The stone beneath my feet gives way. For one suspended heartbeat, there's nothing beneath us.

Valerius's arm locks around my waist. Shadowflame erupts from his back like wings.

We don't fall. His magic catches us above the collapsing floor, black fire forming a narrow bridge through the storm.

Luc leaps onto the remaining ledge, one hand pressed against the wall as the Hall tears itself apart around him.

"Eastern arch!" he shouts.

There's no arch. Only falling stone. Valerius sees something I don't.

He turns, pulling me with him as a section of the ceiling crashes into the place where we stood.

Shadowflame slams against the debris, splitting it around us in a rain of white stone.

Pain punches through the bond. His ribs.

The wound over his sovereign mark. He hides both behind the mental wall he built to keep my heart from feeding on him.

The wall fractures under the strain. His pain slips through.

My sovereign mark drinks. Cold power floods my body.

Valerius feels it and rebuilds the wall instantly.

Aurelia laughs inside me. A low, satisfied vibration beneath my heartbeat. "He weakens himself for you. As they all do."

I don't answer her. The Eternal Flame lashes upward. A tendril wraps around my ankle. Heat becomes command, my body stops responding. Valerius jerks me back, but the flame tightens, dragging us toward the crack in the floor. "Let her go!"

His Shadowflame strikes the white-gold tendril. For the first time, his fire doesn't merge with Starfire... It recoils. The Eternal Flame recognizes his magic and rejects it.

Aurelia's voice presses through my mouth. "He was made to serve it."

Valerius freezes. My lips are smiling but I"m not. He looks into my eyes. "Valentina?"

I try to answer. Aurelia tightens around my throat. My mouth opens. "You still say her name as if she is the one standing here."

Valerius's face changes. He releases my waist with one arm and grips the flame around my ankle. His skin burns. The smell of scorched flesh enters the air. He doesn't let go. "I know she can hear me from wherever you put her."

Shadowflame explodes from his palm. Black fire wraps around his arm, shielding his flesh long enough for him to rip the Eternal Flame away from me. The white-gold tendril tears apart with a scream that comes from every ward in Arcana. The Hall convulses.

Luc reaches the edge of the broken floor and extends one hand. "Now!"

Valerius throws me, my body moves through the air.

Luc catches my wrist and drags me onto the ledge.

His Veil magic wraps around my waist, anchoring me to the stone as Valerius leaps after us.

The floor beneath him vanishes. I catch his hand, warmth flares, my fingers tighten around his.

Together, Luc and I pull him onto the ledge.

The Hall of Passing collapses into the foundations behind us. The dark river disappears. The last white pillars fall. The Eternal Flame continues rising through the wreckage, forcing its way upward through Arcana like a blade driven through the academy's spine.

Luc stares into the abyss. "The Hall is gone."

"The spirits crossed," I say. "Its function was completed."

His pale face turns toward me. "That was a sacred chamber and now it's rubble." His expression tightens.

Valerius steps between us before Luc can answer. "Save the argument."

Luc looks at him. Then at the blood spreading beneath his bandages. "You're dying."

"I'm not dying." Valerius corrects him.

"You should tell your body that." Luc looks back at his eyes. Valerius's mouth tightens.

Another explosion rolls through the academy.

The corridor above us splits open. Daylight crashes into the underground passage.

Not natural daylight, white-gold fire burns across the sky where the observatory roof used to be.

Arcana is open to the heavens. The towers are breaking. The academy is falling.

We climb.

The eastern passage ends beneath a shattered staircase leading into the lower observatory. Valerius goes first, Shadowflame supporting each step. Luc follows behind me, his magic stretched outward, searching walls for trapped students and remaining spirits.

The moment we emerge, chaos swallows us.

The observatory ceiling is gone. One of the silver towers has collapsed across the courtyard, crushing part of the west wing beneath it. Branch banners burn from shattered balconies—Tempest blue, Veil green, Aether red—all turning black at the edges as sparks rise into the white sky.

Remnants pour from every broken window. Not dozens anymore. Thousands at a time. They crawl over the academy's outer walls and gather across rooftops, black bodies twisting beneath the raging Eternal Flame. Pale mouths burn like stars in a dead constellation.

Students fight in the courtyard below. Not by branch anymore, they fight together.

A Tempest student lifts a wall of wind while two Veil healers drag wounded Aether students behind it.

Red fire strikes through blue lightning.

Green roots erupt beneath Remnants and hold them long enough for black-flamed professors to destroy them.

No separate tables. No branch rivalries. No accepted paths. Only Arcana.

Professor Vale stands near the courtyard fountain, both arms raised. Healing light pours from her in green and red waves, spreading through rows of wounded students. Her face is grey with blood running down from her nose. She's burning through herself.

Eli stands on the remains of the north balcony.

Lightning covers his entire body. A storm shaped like a boy.

He throws both hands toward the sky. Thunder answers.

The white clouds split, and a bolt thick enough to swallow a tower strikes the courtyard.

It divides before impact, branching into dozens of blue-white spears that pierce Remnants without touching a single student.

The force throws Eli backward, he catches himself on one knee.

Then rises again, and continues fighting.

My mother stands at the center of the courtyard.

Dean Amara Vale Starling. Her grey dress is gone beneath a black ceremonial cloak torn at one shoulder.

Silver wards burn around her body in rotating circles.

Each time a tower cracks, she thrusts both hands outward and forces the stone to hold long enough for students to escape.

She's tearing Arcana's oldest protections apart. Using the academy's bones as shields.

Professor Thorne stands beside her. He shouldn't be conscious.

His side is soaked in blood. One hand holds a broken staff.

The other glows with blue-white ward magic.

Across from him, descending through the burning sky, one of the Ancient Masters removes his silver mask.

The face beneath isn't old. It's wrong. Smooth skin pulled over a skull that has lived too long, eyes completely black, lips carved with tiny old-law symbols.

Professor Thorne looks up at him. "You have no right to stand in my academy."

The Master smiles. "We built the law you teach."

Thorne raises the broken staff. "Then consider this revision."

He strikes. Blue-white magic explodes upward. The Master descends to meet him. Their spells collide over the courtyard and shatter every unbroken window in the east wing.

Valerius's hand closes around mine. "Stay with me." I look at him.

Aurelia shifts beneath my heart. "He asks for what is already lost."

The cold mark on my chest pulses. I pull my hand away. Valerius's fingers close on emptiness. His face breaks slightly. "We need to reach the Eternal Flame," I say.

The ancient basin stands at the top of the central observatory tower.

White-gold fire erupts from the broken roof, rising higher than the academy and spreading across the sky like a crown.

Every Remnant turns toward it, then kneels.

One by one, across rooftops, courtyards, broken halls.

Thousands of dark bodies lowering before the Flame.

The Ancient Masters descend through the white sky. All three. No longer projections, no longer distant. Their black robes trail ash. Their silver masks gleam beneath Aurelia's fire. They land at the base of the central tower while the Remnants bow around them.

The first Master lifts his face toward me. "Bring her."

The command enters the academy. Students stumble. Professors freeze. My body steps forward, not by choice.

Valerius grabs me around the waist. "No."

The command pulls harder. My feet slide across broken stone. Aurelia presses against the locked place inside me. "Come home."

The Eternal Flame bends toward me. White-gold light wraps around my body. Valerius's Shadowflame erupts between us and the tower, black fire cutting through the command long enough for me to stop moving. Luc raises a Veil shield around my feet. The pressure lessens. "For how long?" Valerius demands.

Luc's face strains. "Not long."

A scream cuts through the courtyard. Professor Thorne is thrown from the air. He crashes through the remains of a stone bridge and hits the ground hard enough for the courtyard to shake. My mother shouts his name. The Ancient Master lands beside him. Thorne tries to rise.

The Master steps on his broken staff. "You protected a vessel you did not understand."

Thorne spits blood onto his boot. "I understood the girl."

The Master lifts one hand. Old-law symbols wrap around Thorne's throat. My cold Starfire rises. I lift my hand. Valerius catches it. "Wait."

"Thorne is compromised." I say.

"I see him." Valerius remind me.

"Then release me." I demand.

The Master drags Thorne upright by the throat.

Thorne's face turns red. His wound opens completely.

Blood spills down his side. My mother sends a wall of silver wards toward them.
