Chapter Thirteen

“What did you want to talk about?” Miles asked when I walked into his office. I’d called him earlier to see if he was free.

“How much of an issue will we have if I take Valerie on a tour of the furniture company?” There shouldn’t be any problems, but I needed to make sure. Miles was the expert.

“Legal will want her to sign another NDA since they’re not under FI’s umbrella. Why does she need a tour?”

“Something isn’t right with the books.” I’d done the regular audit as part of the merger and found a few discrepancies, which was why I’d requested a forensic audit. That had been the right decision.

“We knew that when you asked to hire someone.” Miles leaned forward. “Has she found something more? She’s only been here a week.”

“Valerie found that the P nothing raised a red flag. But I’d appreciate you learning all you can, and we’ll go from there.”

John gave me a lot of credit to know what to look for. I’d have another quick meeting with Josh, Dean, and add Marcus because I wouldn’t let John or FI down. “Sounds good. They know my name since all the invoices come though my department. I’ll tell them Valerie is a new employee.”

“Keep me abreast of the situation.”

“I will. Thanks, John.” I stood and walked out of his office. At least I’d looped our president in on what worried me. I hoped it was just honest mistakes, but I had a gut feeling it was something more. How far did this go, and was it accidental or deliberate? I’d be careful while we were there.
