The Forest
Summer 1924
They lay together, the soft murmur of my waterfall enveloping them like a comforting shawl. A witness to the depth of their feelings. Ifunayla turned towards Eadrick, her eyes brimming with tears she fought hard to hold back. “I love you,” she whispered, the sound nearly swallowed by the soothing backdrop of the waterfall.
His chest tightened as he looked into her eyes, so full of love and fear. Gently, he reached out to brush away a tear that had dared to escape, his touch tender against her skin. “And I love you, Ifu.” His lips found her forehead in a kiss so soft it was like a sigh. Pulling her closer, he enveloped her in his arms, her heart beating against his own, fast and fragile. Her sobs, barely audible, resonated deep within him, stirring a fierce protectiveness.
“What is wrong?” he asked, his brow furrowed with concern.
She curled into him, her body shrinking as she confessed her fears. “Time is running out for us. Your father will soon choose a bride for you, someone deemed suitable. Then you’ll forget me,” she said, Her shoulders trembled as she breathed in deeply, trying to compose herself.
He shook his head slowly, his fingers threading through her hair in a comforting gesture. “Your Godmother spoke to you again, didn’t she?” A growl of frustration lurked beneath the surface.
“Yes,” she sighed, leaning into his touch, seeking solace in his closeness. “She said there’s no room for love between our worlds and that I must leave, for both our sakes.”
Tears welled up in his eyes, blurring his vision. He blinked them back, determined to stay strong for her. “You’re the one I love, Ifunayla. There is no one else for me.” His arms enveloped her more tightly, a fortress against their cruel fate.
Her heart fractured under the weight of their reality. “They’ll never accept us, Eadrick. Our love is a dream caught between two worlds.”
His heart ached to hear her so defeated. “I’m so sorry,” he murmured, pulling her into a tight embrace, wishing he could shield her from all the pain and prejudice of their worlds.
As they clung to each other, the weight of their love pressing down on them, the waterfall continued its endless song—mourning for their sorrow and a whisper of timeless love.
Eadrick finally broke the silence, his voice a blend of hope and desperation. “Let’s run away, Ifu. Let’s find a place where we can be together, just us,” he proposed, daring to dream of a different ending.
Overwhelmed by love, fear, and a desperate yearning for freedom,Ifunayla breathed out in agreement. “Okay, let’s run away.”
Their decision, bold and uncertain, hung in the air around them, filling the space with a mix of dread and anticipation, as they dared to dream of a world where their love could blossom.
But Fate had other plans.
