Epilogue

Miles

As the years passed, both of our boys graduated high school with honors, attended Columbia University, and came to work for Bradshaw Capital. This was their legacy, and I couldn’t have been prouder of them.

“Dad, I closed the deal with Hemingway,” Ben said, walking into my office.

“Excellent, son. Don’t forget family dinner is tonight.”

“I know. Mom already called me this morning.” He smiled. “Allie won’t be able to make it. She has classes.”

“How are things between the two of you?” I asked.

“Things are great. There’s something I want to talk to you about.”

“Okay.”

“I’m going to propose to her on her birthday next week. We’ve been dating for years now, and I love her so much and want her to be my wife.”

“That’s wonderful, son.” I stood up, walked over, and hugged him. “You already know we love her.”

“I know. She loves you guys, too.”

“Did you pick out a ring yet?”

“Yeah. I bought it a couple of days ago.”

“Wow, I can’t believe my son is getting married. Your mom is going to be over the moon. You better tell her tonight.”

“I will.” He chuckled.

I left the office and headed home. When I walked through the door, Stella wasn’t home yet from work. After changing my clothes, I heard her calling for me. Running down the stairs, I took her in my arms and kissed her.

“Sorry, I’m late,” she said. “I ran a little over with a patient.”

“No worries, sweetheart.”

“I stopped and picked up dinner for all of us. The boys should be here soon.”

“I’ll set the table,” I said, reaching up into the cabinet and pulling down the plates.

We heard the front door open and the voices of our boys.

“Hey, parents.” Brayden smiled.

“Hello, son.” I hugged him. “Hi, Delilah.” I hugged her.

Brayden and Ben kissed Stella’s cheek, and we all went into the dining room for dinner. Something was off with Brayden. He seemed nervous. As we were eating, he said he had an announcement to make.

“Mom. Dad. Ben. I asked Delilah to marry me, and she said yes.” He grinned.

Delilah placed her ring on her finger and held her hand out.

“Oh my God. That’s wonderful.” Stella beamed with excitement as she hugged her and Brayden.

“Congrats, bro.” Ben grinned. “Welcome to the family, Delilah.”

“I couldn’t be happier for the both of you.” I held up my glass of bourbon. “Congratulations.”

“There’s something else,” Brayden said. “Delilah is pregnant. We’re having a baby.”

After the boys helped clean up and left, Stella and I went upstairs and got ready for bed.

“We’re going to be grandparents, Miles,” Stella said.

“I can’t believe it, sweetheart.”

“Two weddings and a baby.” She climbed into bed and laid her head on my chest.

“We did good, don’t you think?” I kissed the top of her head. “We raised two wonderful and respectful boys who found the love of their lives and are starting their own families. I think we deserve a trip.”

“We were just in Italy for our anniversary a couple of months ago.” She laughed.

“We deserve another one. Block out some time from your practice because I’m taking you to the Maldives.”

“Can we get one of those over-the-water bungalows?” She lifted her head and stared at me.

“Yes. You know I’ll give you anything you want.” I stroked her cheek. “I love you, Stella.”

“I love you too, Miles.” She climbed on top of me, grabbed my arms, and held them over my head. “And I’m going to show you just how much.” Her lips met mine.

“Damn, I love when you take control.” I smiled.
