Chapter 4 #2
was livable could be found. If any work was contracted, it would be
through Ariel, not that she needed the work. Three crews and Ariel
was still busy all the time. Bindi admired Ariel and all that she
managed to do.
The next morning Moe came and got her.
“Since you’ll be on call, you’ll keep the truck. That way you won’t
have to get a car. Are you sure you want to take the calls all the
time?” Moe asked.
“You’ll let me take a day
off a week, right?”
“Sure. Things aren’t as
crazy around here. When you’re off on Saturday, you’ll be off day
and night.”
“Thank you,
Moe.”
“You know you have friends
here, right?”
“I know Moe and I’m
grateful for all the help you and the others have given
me.”
“Just don’t forget if you
need me, I’m here.”
“Okay. I’ll remember.”
Bindi said. “Who is my partner today or do I have one?”
“Duroc. He’ll help you find
your way around here. Once you feel comfortable with the roads, you
can decide if you’re ready to go out alone.”
“That I can do.”
They arrived at the office and Bindi
filled up her travel mug. A hard day was ahead of her. Moe gave out
assignments and she and Duroc left to get their first one done. He
drove because he wanted to, and she didn’t want to argue over it.
She checked out the house when they arrived and assessed the
danger. It seemed she hadn’t turned that habit off now that she was
out of Alaska. Maybe she never would. This was the job as she was
trained to do it.
The list was half done, and the day had
been as average as they got ready to go to lunch. Duroc took them
to a place he seemed familiar with. This place was in the middle of
nowhere just like they were. It was a sandwich place, and they had
a mean Reuben. After they ate the two of them got back to
work.
“I heard you would be on
call.” Duroc mentioned as they drove home.
“Yes, and I’ll be using the
truck.”
“Good idea to have it on
hand in case you get a call. If you need me, give me a call. Will
you be off Saturday?”
“If nothing comes up.”
Bindi replied.
“We can go out Saturday.
Okay?”
“Okay.”
“Oh, and Bindi?”
“Yes?”
“Be careful.”
“I will.” She smiled at him
as he hopped out and they walked to the office.
“Hey, Moe.” They
said.
“Good day?”
“It was. We finished the
list without any problems.” Bindi informed.
“That’s always good. You’ve
got the truck and I’ll see you in the morning.”
“Where is everyone
else?”
“Two teams got done early
and you’re the third to check in.” Moe explained.
“Okay. We’ll see you in the
morning.”
Moe nodded as they left. Duroc took his
car home and she headed to Ariel’s. This was a great place to be.
Bindi didn’t expect a call out. Normally they got two a month. Odds
were good she wouldn’t have much to do.
Luck wasn’t on her side. She had a call
early in the night. It seemed someone was trying to break in and
the house was five miles from here. Bindi got ready and headed out.
The weight of the gun in its holster made her feel better. There
was also a stun gun on the other side and pepper spray in her shirt
pocket.
It was true that the police were
supposed to check on the calls, but they often turned out not to be
anything more than set off by accident. She’d tried to call, but no
one answered. This required someone to come by. Most nights from
now on that would be her. On the road, she looked at her radio and
knew an emergency button was there she could push to alert Moe or
Tyne.
All these things to ensure the safety
of security specialists and yet it could all still go wrong. Bindi
had made it to the house where several lights were on. She
approached with her stun gun in one hand and a finger of the other
hand on the emergency button.
Knocking on the door, she heard someone
moving around but not toward the door. She tried to call again but
even though she could hear the phone ringing, no one was answering.
Bindi went around the back and knocked there. No response and this
worried her, so she kicked in the door or at least she intended to.
The guys she’d worked with made it look so easy, but she had hit
and been slung back on her ass.
Maybe the simplest solution, she tried
the door. That would have been too easy. Now she checked windows
and finally found one that wasn’t locked. She crawled through the
window. This was a small child’s room. She walked out of the room
and was attacked. The little boy jumped her and was hitting
her.
“Don’t hurt my mommy.” He
yelled and he was crying.
“I’m here to help. Is your
mommy here?” Bindi asked.
The little boy nodded.
“Can you take me to
her?”
He nodded again and took her hand
leading her down the hall.
She was collapsed on the floor and
Bindi dropped to her knees. Her pulse was thready, but she was
alive. Bindi pulled up her radio and called 911.
“I’m with Wolf security and
I have a customer who has collapsed and needs an ambulance right
away. Her pulse is thready and her breathing shallow.”
“We’ll send one right
away.”
They both hung up. “Do you know who
your mommy calls when she needs help?”
“Daddy’s at work. She
usually calls Aunty Beth.”
“Do you know if she has
that number somewhere?”
“No, but Ariel might
help.”
“That’s great. I’ll call
Ariel.” Bindi said and she called right away.
“Ariel.”
“Ariel, this is Bindi. I
had a call out and the mother is ill, and the little boy says you
are the one to call. What’s your name, Sweetie?”
“Joey.”
“Did you hear?”
“I did. Someone will be
there in thirty minutes. It will be alright.” Ariel
assured.
They sat down on the couch. “Don’t
worry Joey. Everyone is on the way.”
The ambulance arrived first. They
loaded the lady up. “Where are you taking her?” Bindi
asked.
“There’s a small hospital
just down the road. Ariel called and redirected us.”
“Okay. Thank
you.”
They had just left when a guy came.
“I’m Jack. Hey, Joey.”
“Hey, Jack.”
“Where’s he
going?”
“You’re taking him to
Ariel’s with you. I’m getting in touch with her husband and locking
up the house.” Jack said.
“Thank you. Are you ready
to go see Ariel, Joey?”
“Sure.” He grinned. It was
a great place for kids.
Bindi took him to the truck and set him
in the passenger seat. She fastened the seat belt and closed his
door. Now she got in and they headed to Ariel’s. When she arrived,
Ariel was waiting. She gave Joey a hug.
“Your mommy will be just
fine. Bindi, you did good.”
Bindi sighed with relief. She went to
her room and got ready for bed. The radio was setup next to her bed
and then she fell into bed asleep almost instantly. Morning would
come too soon. She’d known it would. Her alarm was annoying, the
better to wake her with.
Breakfast was wonderful as usual at
Ariel’s. She hurried to see Moe who would want a report on last
night. “Hey, Moe.”
“I heard you had a busy
night.”
Duroc was already there, and he broke
in. “What happened?”
“Bindi had a call out. She
broke in and saved the client’s life.”
“Why didn’t you call me?”
Duroc asked.
“I handled it. If I
couldn’t, I would have called.”
“Just remember, I have your
back.”
“I remember.”
“Okay, well let’s get to
business.” Moe directed.
She began to hand out the lists to
those doing set ups. As they were leaving, she began to give the
others their assignments. This would be the investigations and the
body guarding. Bindi was still thinking about taking on
investigations but not until she could afford the
training.
Work fell into a pattern as they had
little trouble with their locations. Trouble had picked up at night
and she had two calls the first week. The second was a control box
that didn’t work and had needed to be replaced. Saturday was still
two days away and she wasn’t sure if she looked forward to it or
not.
“Don’t forget your Saturday
is mine.” Duroc whispered. They had just arrived at HQ.
Bindi nodded and they walked in to see
Moe. “You’re off Saturday.” Moe observed.
“Yes.”
“Both of you are
off.”
“That’s good.” Duroc
offered.
“We’ll see you tomorrow but
then not until Monday, but Bindi you’ll be on call Sunday night.
Okay?”
Bindi nodded. She needed the money, and
it hadn’t been that bad. When she actually had to come in, it paid
even more. It was still a good thing that she’d not had to go in
often. Duroc drove away as she got in the truck and drove to
Ariel’s.
Ariel greeted her at the door. “I think
I found you a place.”
“That’s great.”
“Wait until you see it
before you’re too happy.” Ariel grinned.
“When can I go see
it?”
“Jack will take you. He’s
my boy Friday for now.”
Jack appeared out of nowhere. “Come on.
We’ll take a truck. The road is rough.”
They drove across the road and this
road was rough, but not as bad as the driveway to what looked like
an abandoned shed. “Here it is.” Jack motioned to the
shed.
“This is livable?” Bindi
got out and walked around the shed thinking something might be
hiding behind it. Nothing was.
“Go inside.” She did as
directed, and it was better inside but not much. “Ariel thought you
could stay here for a while and start on a new house. Lake front
property is high, and this is five acres. There is a restriction.
It can’t be sold but it can be passed down in your family line.
This place is up against pack land. The road will be improved as
will the lake access. Your home has to be built back away from the
lake a certain distance. Apparently, whoever built your small house
didn’t know or maybe didn’t care about that.”
“Okay. There’s not much to
see here.”
They drove back in silence. She went to
Blake’s office with Ariel so they could talk. “I see you are
disappointed.” Ariel observed.
“It’s not much.”
“No, but the price for the
land which already has utilities connected is great. It does have
to sell fast. That seemed to fit the bill. The place isn’t much,
but it is livable especially if you are going for a new house.
You’ll have the land and can pay it off in no time. Going through
