HELEN
‘Is that a problem?’
‘Only that I long for the time when we can talk about a different subject - how long it takes paint to dry, or which is the best variety of onion to plant.’
‘Since when have we ever discussed those topics?’
‘Never! Because they’re boring. And so is the Nigel saga now. Either fuck him or dump him.’
‘Well, this will probably be the last time we discuss him because it looks like he’s dumped me.’
‘What?’ Carrie looked sympathetic now.
‘I’ve texted him a couple of times to see if he wanted to join me for a walk, like we normally do on a Friday, and he ignored the first one. Then replied with “Sorry I’m busy with a few things”.’
‘What have you done to deserve the cold shoulder?’
‘I’m not sure. Last time I saw him was when he visited the treehouses. I was talking to Adrian, and he seemed down, somehow.’
‘Adrian, the energy guy?’
‘Yes.’
‘Ah. Nigel’s rival.’
‘They’re not rivals. Adrian and I were discussing solar panels, that’s all. And laughing.’
‘Laughing at another man’s solar panel jokes. How outrageously disloyal of you.’
Helen sighed. ‘It’s ridiculous.’
‘Just let him stew. It will do him good not to take you for granted.’
‘I suppose. It feels weird not talking to him, though.’
‘Perhaps you should ask Adrian on a date. Then Nigel would have something to be genuinely jealous about.’
‘Oh, for God’s sake, we’re not fourteen.’
‘No. You’re 48. Old enough not to expect a man to read your mind.’
