Chapter 6
CHAPTER SIX
Penn
“A warning would have been nice,” Rita growled at us as Gideon and I arrived to pick up the twins.
“A warning about what?” Gideon was genuinely confused, but I had some idea.
“Olivia starting piano lessons.” She stood akimbo.
“Oh, yeah.” Gideon smiled. “Sorry, I didn’t think to tell you.”
She inched closer. “I wish you would have so I could have had Dean lock the music room.”
I cackled. “Rita, are you saying princess Olivia is…bad?” I pressed a hand to my chest. “Gideon, are you hearing this?”
He shook his head and sighed. “I’m disappointed in you, Rita.”
“?Ya! Fuck off, both of you, and take your children.”
“She actually has her piano instructor coming over in an hour, so we do have to hurry.” Gideon scooped up Owen’s backpack while I snagged Olivia’s.
“That instructor needs to work overtime because ?Dios mío! Gideon, she’s…” Rita hummed and hung her head.
Gideon and I laughed. “I’m sure by the next time you see her, she’ll be better.”
Sharp eyes met Gideon’s. “?Vete pa'l carajo! I can’t do this again.”
We were cut off when Olivia and Owen rushed into the room and crashed into Gideon with a hug, then me. Matteo sauntered in, headphones around his neck, looking even taller than the last time I’d seen him.
“What the hell are you feeding him, Rita? He’s almost as tall as I am.”
She smacked my arm. “He’s already taller than me, so shut it.”
Matteo held out his fist, which I bumped. Gideon did as well but with a grimace.
“No.” He grabbed Matteo’s wrist and forced him into a hug. “We hug, and stop teaching Penn your slang.”
He chuckled. “Bet.”
Gideon covered Matteo’s mouth with his hand. “No bet. Just say okay.”
Matteo blew a raspberry, and Gideon quickly pulled his hand away. “Gross.”
“Come on you two, Livy has piano lessons and Owen has to finish his painting for school,” I announced. “Tell Dean I said hi.”
“Will do, be safe.”
Danny had driven us, and he held the door open for the twins. Before Gideon and I got in, he stopped us.
“We’ve got a problem.”
Gideon’s brow dropped; I was sure this had to do with the governor.
“Amy Jackson was just arrested.”
Amy Jackson was the current police commissioner. She’d taken over for Larry Shaw, who’d been loyal to Lorcan Anders.
“What, why?” Gideon gritted his teeth.
“Not sure, I was just notified.”
“Get me home.”
We hurried into the car. Gideon was having a hard time keeping a smile on his face as the kids rattled on about all the cool things they’d done at their sleepover. I kept them occupied while Gideon stared out the window, glaring at the town he loved so much and worked so hard to keep as his.
“I just got off the phone with Yolanda Hale.” Gideon sat back in his desk chair. Toni, Danny, Alex, and I had been called in after he’d had a chance to figure things out.
“What’s the state attorney have to say?” Toni asked as we all sat around Gideon’s small conference table in his office.
“Apparently, Amy Jackson was arrested for selling drugs to underaged kids. There was a sting investigation done and a bunch of other shit.”
“I call bullshit on that. The chief would have warned you; so would Yolanda. Something doesn’t mesh here.” I started scrolling on my phone and reading news articles on the arrest.
“I spoke with Chief Williams. He had no idea it was going on.”
“And how does the chief of police not know that the commissioner is being investigated?” Alex argued.
“This all has to be connected with Victor and his resignation. He’s set to step down next week. Suddenly two seats are opening up, and I have a feeling Benito Calvern is looking to have them filled. He’s got to be the head of this snake.” Gideon took out a cigar and rolled it between his fingers.
“I spoke with Solange, and she’s doing what you wanted and calling in all her favors, but even she doesn’t think it’ll be enough. Some big hitters are backing Calvern,” Alex informed us.
“What did you find out about Benito, Toni?” Gideon inquired.
“Not a lot. He’s been eerily quiet for the ten years he’s lived here. Loved in the community, big with charity. He comes from old money, so he has some powerful people who attend his galas and such. One being Senator Robins.”
Senator Steven Robins was the senior senator for this state while Lucy Mikens was the junior one. Neither were in Gideon’s pocket as he’d never had use for them.
“What about Lucy Mikens?” I asked.
Toni grunted. “She’s a fucking mess. Not sure how she became a senator—but then again, this is America. She’s easily manipulated, and rumor has it she’s having an affair with Robins.”
“Two senators knockin’ boots. Can we exploit this?” Gideon sat forward.
“Not sure. If Calvern has his talons in Robins and she’s sleeping with him, I’m guessing she’s team Benito, too.”
“Not if she thinks her world is about to implode.” Gideon grinned. “Get me proof of this affair. I want everything.”
Toni smiled. “You got it, Boss.”
“Danny, I want you staying connected with Yolanda. Anytime she knows shit, I want to know it.”
“No problem.”
“Alex, find out how this fucking sting happened and no one knew, and who ordered it…I want everything.”
“Yes, Boss.”
After they left Gideon’s office, he stared at me. It was the kind of look you gave someone when you had a lot to convey but didn’t want to get heavy.
“Just say it, Gideon.”
“If this gets ugly, dangerous, you have to promise me you’ll do what I ask of you.”
“As long as that doesn’t mean leaving your side, no problem.”
“Penn.”
“Gideon.” I lifted a brow.
“So stubborn,” he muttered and stood to walk to me. “I’m serious.”
“So am I. I won’t walk away from you, even if you argue that you have a hundred men at your back. Stop asking.”
“I’m not asking.”
My brows rose to my hairline. “Do you think you’re ordering me?”
He sighed and leaned against his desk mere inches from me. “I don’t want anything to happen to you, and if you’re with the kids, I know they’d be safe too.”
I hooked my finger in his belt loop and pulled him closer.
“You’re thinking too much. Danny, Alex, and Toni are all off doing as you instructed and until they have answers for you, you’re sort of at a standstill.
” Slowly, I unbuttoned and unzipped his pants.
“Maybe I can help take your mind off it.”
“Think you can?”
I smirked and pulled his semihard cock out. “I know I can.”
I swirled my tongue over the head, earning me a hiss. His hand came up to rest by my cheek. He loved feeling his cock in my mouth and down my throat.
“Fuck, Penn.”
I took him in until my nose was buried in his pubes, then swallowed.
“Yessss.”
His other hand moved to my other cheek, and soon he was fucking my face with clear abandon and I was loving it: his essence, his sounds, his possessive need to dominate me.
When the salty bitter taste of his come splashed against my tongue, I drank his load, humming happily.
I popped off and looked into his eyes; there was so much love there…and hunger.
“Now I want your ass,” he growled.
Yeah, his mind was successfully taken off this mess with the governor and commissioner.
