Chapter Sixty-Seven Piper
Chapter Sixty-Seven
Piper
“Holy shit!” Piper exclaimed, looking up from the diary and meeting Kiersten’s gaze.
“Don’t stop now!” Kiersten gesticulated wildly with her potato peeler. “Keep going!”
“We need to call Rosamund. She needs to hear this.”
“Good idea. But tell her to come right now,” Kiersten demanded.
Piper picked up her phone. Rosamund answered on the first ring.
“Listen,” she said. “The diaries are getting juicy. And we got a new dog. And someone is sending us cockroaches and middle-aged sexual perverts. So bring Guinevere and come over for dinner. You need to hear all this.”
Her face broke into a smile. She covered the phone and looked over at Kiersten. “Rosamund wants to know if Miles can come over for dinner too?” She resisted the adolescent urge to make kissing noises.
Kiersten grinned back. “Of course Miles can come. Tell him we’ll eat in an hour. And call Reggie and Valentina too. And Lillian next door, if she’s back from her trip. I’ll peel another bag of potatoes.”
A few minutes later Rosamund and Guinevere showed up. Guinevere immediately ran out into the backyard, where the girls were playing fetch with Travis.
“I’ll make the vegetables,” Rosamund said.
“Oh.” Kiersten looked crestfallen. “I forgot about vegetables. Other than the potatoes, of course.”
“You are an unreconstructed Midwesterner.” Rosamund smirked as she removed four gleaming purple eggplants from a canvas New Yorker bag. “But don’t worry. I’ll make these.”
Kiersten wrinkled her nose. “Eggplant?”
“It’s good for you.”
“That’s what I’m afraid of,” Kiersten said, opening a new sack of Yukon Gold potatoes.
Rosamund removed a can of breadcrumbs from her purse. “I will prepare them in a way that makes you forget you’re eating vegetables. I promise.”
“Go for it.” Kiersten handed her an apron. “Make me believe in the power of roughage.”
“Ladies, are you ready?” Piper asked, after bringing Rosamund up to speed on everything that had happened.
Kiersten nodded vigorously. “Keep going.”
Piper opened the diary and began to read.
