Chapter 6 – Lilith

CHAPTER SIX

LILITH

“Please come,” Evelynn begs, leaning across the bar. “You are my only friend. The fang bangers give me evil looks because I’m with Lucian.” She huffs.

I wipe the bar down. “I can’t close the bar.

And the reason they give you the evils is that you’ve bagged the top dog of the club.

Those fang bangers are desperate to become an ol’ lady.

You’ve won yourself the top prize. They are envious.

It’s a good job you’re what you are now,” I murmur quietly.

“I wouldn’t put it past them to stab you in the back to get Lucian. ”

She curls her lip, that possessive vampire rage bubbling to the surface. I smile, my grin deepening.

“They ever touch Lucian, I will tear them apart,” she snarls.

I laugh and shake my head as she blinks, almost surprised by her own reaction. “Don’t worry, it’s part of the primal instincts we get from being this way.”

She nods. “You ever felt it?” she asks innocently, before realising. “I er… I don’t mean… I’m sorry,” she mumbles.

I give her a tight smile. “No. I haven’t.”

“Please come tonight. You can come when the bar is closed. It’s not starting until after eleven anyway. I’ll even stay and help you close and clean up,” she pleads.

“Evelynn…” I pause. “I don’t want to see him,” I admit.

Evelynn nods. “Let me speak to Lucian.” She pulls out her phone and calls him, moving outside so I can’t hear the conversation.

I continue to work, serving the locals of the town; people who still, to this day, look at me with sympathy and pity in their eyes.

They think it was an electrical fire. The club made sure I was away all night at that festival.

When in reality, they found me panicked, feral, and hunting.

They all took care of me, showed me how to live, how to cope, helped me grieve.

All but Silas. He kept away. Even when I asked Lucian how he could allow Silas in the club after what he did, Lucian just said he did it for the good of the club. His loyalty is stronger than iron.

Evelynn walks back in, nibbling on her bottom lip. “So… Silas will be there, but once he’s hooked up with a fang banger, you won’t see him,” she winces, watching and waiting for my response.

“Ugh, fine. But you help me clean up. And you can’t just disappear to go fuck Lucian,” I warn.

She smiles widely. “I promise to do all of that. And no fucking Lucian until at least three a.m.” She holds out her hand to shake on it.

I roll my eyes and shake her hand.

Hours pass, and once the bar has closed, Evelynn and I clean using our vampire speed. Have to say, it’s fun having someone with me. It feels like it did back when my family were here. Music blaring on the jukebox, both of us singing and dancing as we clean.

I hadn’t realised how much I missed the company.

“Okay,” I sigh, chucking the cloth into the sink at the back of the bar. “Let me quickly change, and then we’ll get going.”

Evelynn nods and takes a seat at the bar.

“What are you doing sitting there?” I ask, pausing.

“Waiting for you,” she shrugs.

“You can come upstairs and wait,” I smirk.

“Okay, cool. I didn’t want to invite myself up there, and you walk around with your flaps and wangers out.” Evelynn shrugs, walking around the back of the bar to follow me to my upstairs apartment.

“Flaps and wangers?” I ask, brow raised. “I’m not about to get naked and flash you.”

“Why not? Am I not your type?” Evelynn’s smile widens.

I laugh and shake my head. “Shit, you tease Lucian like this?” I ask, still laughing.

“Sometimes. It doesn’t really take a lot for him to snap,” Evelynn smirks.

“Oh, I know. He’s a very serious dude,” I snort.

We walk into my bedroom, and I open the wardrobe. I kept my old room, not my parents’. After the fire and the rebuild, it just doesn’t feel right taking their room.

Evelynn takes a seat on the old rocking chair in the window, looking out over the town.

“This is great for people-watching,” she mumbles, her face practically pressed against the glass. “Wait, is that Silas?” she blurts.

I whirl around in nothing but my bra and look out, seeing a shadowy figure standing at the edge of the forest. For a brief moment, I swear violet eyes glow. I blink and shake my head. It can’t be. When I look again, the figure is gone.

“No. That’s nothing,” I mutter, quickly turning back around.

I pull on my black lace cami top, keep on my jeans, kick off my Converse, and pull on my black heeled boots. I spray deodorant and perfume before touching up my makeup, the dark eyeliner making my now vibrant green eyes pop. I keep my lips natural, only adding gloss.

I turn around and hold my hand out to Evelynn. “This do?” I ask.

Grinning, she nods. “Er, hell yes.” She stands and looks down at her outfit. “Shit. You got a top I could borrow? I got cleaning fluid on this one,” she says, pointing.

“Sure.” I spin around and pull out my black embroidered corset. “I haven’t worn this in years. I went through an emo phase. But this with those jeans will have Lucian drooling like a dog,” I wink.

Evelynn nibbles on her bottom lip and nods. Whipping off her top and bra, she flings them across the room.

“And you were worried about my wangers,” I mock.

She laughs. “Come on, fasten me up.”

She cups her large breasts with her hands while I try to place the corset in the right position.

“Okay, that’s good,” she says, holding it in place.

I begin lacing the blood-red ribbon at the back, pulling it tight as I go.

“Easy, I need to breathe,” she winces.

I pause. “Er, no, you don’t,” I remind her.

“Oh yeah!” She bursts out laughing. “Okay, well, I want to be at least slightly comfortable.”

I continue to fasten the corset until I reach the bottom, tying a tight red bow. “Done,” I say.

She turns around, placing her hands on her hips. “What do you reckon?” she asks, her dark hair draped over one shoulder.

“I think Lucian will pounce as soon as you set foot inside the club,” I smile.

“You know, you could hook up with one of the brothers tonight. It might do you good,” she adds, returning my grin.

I shake my head. “Probably not a good idea.”

“When was the last time you, er… fucked?” she asks.

“Twenty-seven years and six months ago,” I answer.

Evelynn’s mouth hangs open. “You haven’t done it since you changed?!” she asks, surprised.

I swallow and shake my head. “No. I haven’t felt like it.”

Her eyes fill with sadness. To my surprise, she reaches out and pulls me to her, hugging me tight.

“I know you say you didn’t feel like it, but you really need some vampire dick,” she says, rubbing my back.

A small bubble of laughter escapes me, and I find myself hugging her back.

“Not sure I should seek dick tonight. And not from a member of the Crimson Covenant,” I point out.

She pulls back, keeping her hands on my shoulders. “Cain is a nomad,” she suggests, arching her brow. “He isn’t always around, and maybe you could both do each other a favour and scratch each other’s itch?”

“You want us to be each other’s scratching post?” I smirk.

“Sure. You rub yourself against him, and he rubs himself against you,” she says, biting back her laughter.

“If you are about to cheat on Lucian with Lilith, I think he would allow it,” a deep voice mutters from the doorway.

We both jump, letting out a screech of surprise.

Clutch stands there, his shoulder casually resting against the doorframe, a cocky grin spreading across his face.

“Clutch. Fuck!” I snap. “You cannot just walk up here. What if either of us were getting dressed?!”

“Then I would watch quietly so as not to disturb you, doll,” he shrugs, twiddling the cocktail stick with his tongue.

“Tell that to Lucian,” Evelynn challenges.

Clutch’s smile falters, and he straightens. “I only meant Lilith, not you. Prez would have my balls on a stick if he thought I was looking at you while you were wearing clothes. Fuck knows what he’d do if I saw you without any on.” He shudders at the thought.

“Why are you here, Clutch?” I sigh.

“Prez sent me to get you. He said, and I quote, ‘Neither of you should be out this late alone,’” he nods.

Evelynn frowns. “We are vampires. The night is when we’re awake. And what exactly could harm us?”

Clutch’s jaw tightens. Looking off to the side, he shrugs. “I’m just following orders.”

There is more going on than what he’s letting on. I open my mouth to press further, but Evelynn’s cell rings.

“Hello?” she smiles. “Hang on.” She holds her phone out and presses the speaker button. “Okay, you’re on speaker.”

“Lilith, don’t argue with Clutch. Get in the truck and stay with him,” Lucian orders through the phone.

“I wasn’t the one arguing. It’s your woman,” I point out.

“Petal,” Lucian growls. Evelynn’s grin widens.

“Yes, dear,” she answers mockingly.

“Just get in the truck with Clutch,” he sighs, exasperation echoing in his voice.

“Okie dokie,” Evelynn says cheerily.

“Go…” Lucian begins, but Evelynn ends the call and slides the phone into her back pocket.

Clutch’s mouth hangs open. “You just hung up on him,” he points out.

“I did,” she nods.

“He’s going to be pissed, doll,” Clutch tuts, shaking his head.

I bite down on my bottom lip, fighting the urge to laugh at Evelynn’s give-no-fucks approach.

“Clutch, look at what I’m wearing. I think this…” She points to her heaving bosom. “Will calm and soothe any anger he is currently feeling. And if he’s still angry, then I can fuck it out of him,” she shrugs.

Clutch blinks like he’s seeing an entirely different person. “You’ve changed,” he mutters.

“I took on Anathema and survived. I’m no longer scared. And I’m also a vampire now. I can handle anything,” she shrugs.

“Yeah, well, I would rather face Anathema than face a pissed-off Lucian,” I mutter as we head out.
