Chapter 12 Theo

"Theo," she said. Her voice was the voice of a woman who had been coaching figure skaters for thirty years and had developed the particular calm of someone who had seen every possible catastrophe and had survived them all. "You're landing quads."
"I told you in the text."
"You told me you were skating. You did not tell me you were landing quads. I inferred the quads from the fact that you sent the text at all, because you would not have contacted me to report triples. Triples are not newsworthy. Quads mean you are back."
"I am not back. I am skating at 5 AM in an empty rink in suburban Georgia. That is not back. Back implies forward motion toward something. I am moving in circles. Literally."
"You are moving in circles that contain quad loops. This is not nothing."
It was not nothing. She was right. The quads had returned over the past two weeks with a consistency that surprised me and that I was reluctant to name as progress because naming it as progress implied a trajectory, and trajectories implied destinations, and destinations implied audiences, and audiences implied the cascade.
But the quads were there. Every morning.
Under the specific conditions of the Decatur rink at 5 AM with one man in row three and the glass between us and the particular quality of attention that Mars Santos provided, which was total and precise and did not require me to perform.
He watched the way a scientist watched an experiment: with interest in the outcome but without investment in a specific result.
The attention was pure observation. No judgment. No scoring. No expectation.
Under those conditions, my body remembered what it could do.
"I have something to discuss with you," Fumiko said. "The Southeast Regional is in six weeks. Kennesaw. Thirty minutes from where you live."
The word "regional" entered my bloodstream like ice water. I felt it in my hands first, then my chest, then the base of my skull where the anxiety lived, coiled and patient, waiting for exactly this kind of stimulus.
"No," I said.
"I am not asking you to compete. I am telling you it exists and it is nearby and the entry deadline is in three weeks."
"No."
"Theo. Listen to me. I have coached you since you were twelve years old. I watched you fall at Nationals and I watched you disappear for two years and I have waited, patiently, because patience is the only appropriate response to what happened to you. I am not pushing. I am informing."
"You are pushing by informing. The informing is a push dressed in neutral language."
"Perhaps. But the neutral language is necessary because direct language activates your defenses and then we spend forty-five minutes talking about the activation instead of the information."
She was not wrong. Fumiko was rarely wrong about me, which was simultaneously comforting and infuriating in the way that being known by someone who has watched you for thirteen years is comforting and infuriating.
"I can't skate in front of people," I said. The sentence was flat and factual and I delivered it the way I would have delivered a medical diagnosis. Clinical. Informational. As if the sentence did not contain the central catastrophe of my professional life.
"You are skating in front of someone. The goalie."
I had told her about the goalie. Not in the text.
In a follow-up call three days later, during which I had described the situation with the clinical precision of a patient reporting symptoms to a specialist. There is a man at the rink.
He watches. I can skate when he watches.
I cannot skate when anyone else watches. These are the facts.
Fumiko had listened without interrupting, which was her most powerful coaching technique, and at the end had said: "Then the question is not whether you can perform. The question is what conditions your body requires, and whether those conditions can be expanded."
"One person is not a competition," I said now.
"One person is a controlled variable. A competition is 2,000 uncontrolled variables with cameras and judges and a score that determines whether the last two years of my life were a permanent condition or a temporary one, and I am not ready to answer that question. "
"You may never feel ready. Readiness is not a feeling. Readiness is a decision."
I closed my eyes. Axel was on my lap, purring with the steady indifference of a creature who had never experienced performance anxiety and who considered human emotional complexity a design flaw.
"There is also something else," Fumiko said. "Mikiko Hayashi is coaching in Charlotte now. She has three students preparing for the regional. She has asked about you."
Mikiko Hayashi. My former training partner's coach. A woman I had competed against in the coaching rankings for years, who had watched my fall at Nationals from the coaches' area, who had called Fumiko afterward and said words that I did not know and did not want to know.
"She asked whether you were training. Whether there was any chance you would enter. She said, and I am quoting, 'The field is weaker without him.'"
"The field managed fine without me for two years."
"The field managed. The field did not thrive. There is a difference."
I opened my eyes. The apartment. The cat.
The Saturday morning light coming through the windows of a one-bedroom in Decatur where a twenty-four-year-old former figure skater was having a conversation about returning to competition while his hands shook and his cat purred and a goalie somewhere across the city was probably sitting in his own apartment drinking coffee that was getting cold.
"I need to think about it," I said.
"Of course."
"I am not saying yes."
"I heard you say you need to think about it. Thinking is not yes. But thinking is also not the immediate no that you have given me every other time I have raised this topic. Thinking is new. Thinking is progress."
"You sound like my therapist."
"Your therapist and I are aligned on this. We have discussed it."
"You talk to my therapist?"
"Dr. Okafor and I have a professional relationship that predates your crisis and that exists to support your recovery. We do not discuss specifics. We discuss frameworks. The framework we agree on is this: when the body is ready, the body will seek the challenge. The seeking is the signal."
"I am not seeking."
"You texted me. For the first time in four months. You told me you were landing quads. That is seeking, Theo. Whether you call it that or not."
The call ended. I sat on the couch with Axel and the silence and the residue of a conversation that had deposited something heavy in my chest. Not dread.
Not quite hope. Something in between. The specific, uncomfortable sensation of a door being pointed out to you when you have been pretending the wall is solid.
Six weeks. The regional. Kennesaw. Thirty minutes away.
I had not competed in two years. The last time I had stepped onto competitive ice, I had fallen, and the falling had broken something inside me that I had spent every day since trying to repair.
The repair was happening. Slowly, in the dark, at 5 AM, under the gaze of one man whose attention did not trigger the thing.
But the repair was private. The repair existed in the sealed space of a suburban rink at dawn, and the question Fumiko was asking, the question my therapist was asking, the question my own body was beginning to ask with its quads and its clean landings and its willingness to be watched by one, was: could the private repair survive a public test?
I did not know. And the not-knowing was, as Fumiko had correctly identified, a departure from the immediate no. The not-knowing was a crack in the wall. A quarter-inch. A toe pick's depth.
But quarter-inches mattered. A goalie had taught me that.
