Chapter Eleven

CHAPTER ELEVEN

REBECCA

I woke up in a haze of pain and discomfort. My leg was killing me. I kept remembering them taking the sledgehammer to it. The pain should have knocked me out, but it was so bad I couldn’t even pass out. I knew at that moment if I lived, I would never be an agent again. This was the end of my career.

I must be imagining things because I could swear, I was smelling Dean’s cologne. It was something citrusy and fresh. I loved it. Then I realized my hand was really warm. Blinking my eyes open I saw his bald head laying by our hands. My heart was beating faster seeing him here with me. I looked around to see my parents cuddled on a cot together against the window. I squeezed my guy’s hand and noticed that I had a ring on my finger. I knew it wasn’t there when I went to surgery. I vaguely remember thinking he threatened to kill my attackers and telling him I already did.

“Dean, wake up.” I whispered. I didn’t want to wake my parents. He raised his head, and his eyes widened. I saw a tear roll down his face.

“Fuck I love you so much Rebecca Grace McCall. Please tell me you’re going to marry me and put me out of my misery.” He spit it all out so fast I giggled through the pain I was in.

“Seems I have no choice since you put a ring on it while I was unconscious.” I held it up and looked at it sparkling in the light. I winked at him.

“A man has to do what he has to. Your dad already gave me his blessing.” He leaned over and gently kissed my lips.

“Eww, I need to brush my teeth. I look like death warmed up.” I heard a gasp from across the room. My parents scrambled to get up. My mom rushed over and gently hugged me.

“Oh, my precious girl, you’re awake.” She sat and squeezed Dean’s shoulder. “You make my girl giggle.” She kissed him on the cheek. I was hurting but I didn’t want to sleep yet. I knew if they came in, I’d be out like a light.

“How much do you know about your condition baby?” Dean asked me as he looked in my eyes. I took a deep breath and looked down my body. I wiggled my toes only there was nothing on one side to wiggle. I noticed the flatness next to my other leg. I felt like I was going to be sick. Suddenly there was a bowl in front of me and I vomited until it was dry heaves. My mom got a wet washcloth to wipe my face and place on my neck to help with the nausea. “I guess that answers that question. Do you want to see it?”

I shook my head no, hell no. Closing my eyes I felt tears run down my face. I would never run again, I would have to learn to walk on a prosthetic. Why would he want me? I don’t know if I would ever be able to ride with him on his bike again. I started shaking and I looked at the man sitting holding my hand.

“I see you spiraling and thinking stupid shit. I’m going to say this and make myself as clear as crystal. You, Rebecca Grace McCall are going to be my wife. You will give me beautiful babies. We will be happy. If you want to be a consultant for the FBI after you have healed and adjusted, you can do it from the farm. I will be there with you. I’m going to open a garage there once you are healed enough to be self-sufficient. I know how stubborn you are so it will come. Until then we will get through this one day at a time. We can marry whenever you want. Here in the hospital or at the farm. I love you and I will always love you. This changes nothing.” He kissed me again. “I’m going to go get the doctor so he can give you something for the pain. I can see it in your eyes. We are not going anywhere until we can take you home with us.”

“Dad, what is he talking about.” I asked him confused. My dad was very independent and stubborn. I know that is where I get it from.

“Your young man has been coming to the farm since we met him. He would come spend the weekend and work on the equipment for us. He stayed in your apartment to be closer to you. Dean spent Christmas with us. He told us what his intentions were towards you. He was prepared to wait for you until you were ready to retire and start a family. That boys loves you like I love your mother.” He smiled at me and kissed my forehead. “I don’t give a damn what he did before. He is part of this family now.”

I smiled and felt a sharp stabbing pain in my leg and I cried out. I saw Dean run in the room with the doctor.

“Ms. McCall, while it’s good to see you awake and alert, there is no point being in pain when you don’t have to be.” The doctor put something in my IV that started to relax me. My leg was easing up.

“I know you have a lot of questions. Depending on how your leg is doing we will try to send you home in about four weeks. It will be at least six to eight weeks before we can fit you with a prosthetic. That can be done at the hospital where you’re from. Asshole Agent Morrissey said that you will retain your insurance due to being injured on the job.” The doctor realized that I was not tracking them anymore. I felt myself getting fuzzy. He smiled and gently patted my good leg. “Get some rest we will talk more tomorrow. I’d prefer you to start with liquids then we will see about something more solid tomorrow. You have a great support system here.”
