Chapter 14

Rafael

“Sorry for not respecting your rule,” I said.

Caroline stretched out on the bed next to me, giving me a great view of her long legs. Jesus, how could a woman look this incredible?

“I’m extremely glad you disrespected it,” she said. “

“Then I’m sorry I tortured you first.”

She sniggered. “I’m not. Oh my God, that build-up was insane. I came pretty much the moment you filled me. Don’t be sorry about that.”

“Want to know a secret?” I asked. “I’m not sorry.”

She rolled onto her side and grinned at me. “I didn’t think you were.”

She kissed me, then snuggled closer. I draped an arm across her body, allowing myself to think about the way she felt.

The answer? She felt perfect. Like she was meant to be snuggled. Like we had been wasting all this time by not hooking up sooner.

“I’m not that easy,” she whispered, eyes closing sleepily.

I caressed her cheek. “I didn’t think you were.”

“Two glasses of whiskey don’t normally make me take my clothes off.”

“Understood,” I replied. “Just Napoleon’s whiskey.”

She giggled, then her breathing slowed. I was tired, wanted to close my eyes and enjoy the moment with Caroline, but I kept my eyes open. I couldn’t stop staring at her.

“I hope this wasn’t just a one-time thing,” I whispered.

But she was already asleep, her bare chest rising and falling steadily.

Giving her a final kiss on the forehead, I slowly left the bed. I pulled the sheets up to her neck, then watched her for a few more moments. Delaying the inevitable moment where we had to part.

But eventually, that moment arrived.

I slipped away, picking my steps carefully to make as little noise as possible, silently closing Caroline’s door behind me.

I had to pass Harrison’s room on the way back to my own, and I wondered if he’d heard anything.

He said he was going to bed early, and usually took a sleeping pill after a hard day like today. But still, I wondered.

I usually took my showers in the evenings, but tonight I went right to bed. I could still smell Caroline’s perfume on my own skin, and didn’t want to wash that off. Not yet.

Now that it was over, I had plenty of time to overthink the situation. Sometimes I hated that about myself, but then again, being an overthinker was part of my job. Would things be awkward now that Caroline and I had slept together? Would she distract me from my job of keeping Harrison safe?

I shook my head. I didn’t want to focus on all the questions nagging me. Right now, I just wanted to bask in how good this felt.

How good Caroline felt.

The incredibly-soft skin underneath my fingertips.

Her warm breast in my palm.

The way she gazed over her shoulder at me through her long eyelashes while I shuddered and shook with release, and the way she clamped herself around me…

I smiled and fell into a deep, happy sleep.

The next morning, I was busy calling everyone involved with our return home.

Ensuring there was a flight plan, arranging for transportation from Teterboro back into the city.

Notifying our people at the Blackstone & Moreau building that he was returning, and to have his office ready.

The smell of food permeated the dining room, but I had to finish this before I sat down and ate.

In a lot of ways, it was like escorting a member of the royal family around. Harrison created waves wherever he went.

A chair behind me creaked, and I turned away from the window.

As soon as I saw her, I stopped listening to my phone call, the voice of the assistant on the line flattening out into a monotonous drone.

Caroline looked flawless in a flowing summer dress tied with a leather belt around her waist, emphasizing her figure.

We locked eyes, and she gave me a playful little wink.

I smiled and turned back to my phone conversation.

Caroline wasn’t just some random woman. She was… something else.

Something special.
