Chapter 55 #2

The kiss began with impossible gentleness, soft and unhurried.

The wet stroke of a tongue parted the seam of my lips, teasing there just long enough to draw a trembling breath from me before it found mine.

The instant they met, every restraint inside me detonated.

The kiss ignited into sudden, claiming hunger, fierce and overwhelming.

Liquid heat pooled between my thighs as I was devoured by an unseen mouth, consumed by touches that had no physical form and yet felt more vivid than anything I’d ever experienced.

A familiar scent enveloped me, so achingly familiar that it lodged somewhere beneath my ribs before my mind could give it a name. Worn leather, sweeping wind. The charged stillness of a distant storm.

Recognition struck at once. The impossibility. The undeniable certainty.

Him.

Across from me, Rìan's breathing faltered.

His gaze, which until then had seemed fixed somewhere far beyond me, sharpened abruptly as our eyes collided, the same realization unfolding across his face.

The shock was utterly unguarded, his composure stripped away by whatever he was seeing, whatever he was feeling.

Me.

His fingers twitched against mine as though he wanted to tear his hand away but couldn't. The magic of the well held us together, neither of us strong enough to fight it.

It was his phantom touch that skimmed slowly down my body, cupping my breast, rough calluses brushing the hardened peak of my nipple.

Shockwaves raced through me. A soft sound escaped my lips, and across from me Rìan's shoulders stiffened as he heard it, his own lips parting, his breaths turning shallow.

The touch drifted lower, gliding over my ribs before tracing the curve of my abdomen, lower and lower still, every nerve beneath my skin blazing in its wake.

A shiver rippled through me, my body impossibly alive beneath that imagined hand, surrendering to a desperate craving my mind could no longer hope to resist.

Another hand slid into my hair, closing into a fist at my nape. It drew my head back, not painfully, but with firm, unyielding certainty, just as its twin finally reached the molten heat between my thighs.

Across from me, Rìan let out a strangled groan, the sound rough enough to send another shudder through my body. He wasn't truly touching me, yet he could somehow still feel my impossible wetness beneath his fingers—and it was undoing him.

They glided over my lower lips, circling the sensitive pearl at my center. Rìan's gaze dropped to my mouth at once, the silver flecks in his eyes swallowed by darkness until they were almost entirely black.

The hand continued its relentless caress, each deliberate stroke sending another pulse of pure pleasure through me. My legs trembled, barely able to hold me.

A finger slid inside me, retreated, then slid deeper still.

A whimper slipped past my lips before I could swallow it back, and across from me Rìan answered with a low, broken moan of his own, his hips shifting almost imperceptibly as though every part of him ached to be the one drawing those sounds from me for real.

The touch grew ever more insistent, each stroke and slide drawing me closer to an edge I had no hope of escaping.

My toes curled inside my boots, soft, helpless moans escaping my throat.

I couldn't think, couldn't reason—couldn't fight back—as the caress drove me higher still, so excruciatingly perfect I could barely breathe.

I wanted more. Needed more.

My free hand slid up Rìan's chest, fisting in the fabric of his shirt. I leaned into him, my forehead coming to rest against his shoulder, every part of me consumed by the relentless rhythm between my legs. I clung to him as though he were the only thing anchoring me to the world, every muscle clenched around a touch that wasn’t really there.

Then I felt his hand—his real hand—settle against my waist.

The contrast ripped away the last thin thread tethering me to myself. He drew me against him. His hardness pressed against my softness, the fit so natural that I melted helplessly into him.

Those ghostly fingers circled my delicate nub and slipped into me once more. The impossible overlap of sensations—the well's illusion entwined with the undeniable reality of Rìan's body against mine for the first time—became more than I could bear.

I shattered in his arms.

Wave after wave crashed through me, so overwhelming they stole the strength from my legs, bright bursts of white scattering across my vision, leaving me able to do nothing but ride out the wild tide of my release.

He was everywhere, surrounding me, filling every one of my senses until I could no longer tell where the vision ended and he began.

The pleasure lingered as an echo beneath my skin before slowly receding, and with it, the shadows pouring from the well dissolved into nothingness.

Water rushed around our ankles, streaks of magic flashing through the swirling current as the tide returned.

The chamber gradually resolved around us, the eight-pointed star glaring down at us like a judgmental eye.

I hung boneless in Rìan's arms, my forehead still resting against his shoulder, as we stood there breathing together, neither of us able to shake what had just happened.

Our joined hands finally fell limply to our sides, yet neither of us released the other. His fingers remained laced with mine, still sticky with our blood.

Slowly, almost hesitantly, he lowered his head.

His nose brushed the shell of my ear in a touch so light it felt like a question.

Without thinking, I angled my face, exposing the curve of my neck.

He followed the line of my jaw as he inhaled deeply, his lips pausing just above the damp skin of my throat.

The warm brush of his breath sent another shiver racing through me.

I wanted him.

Not the vision the well had shown us, but him. Now.

The solid press of him against me felt even more intoxicating than the illusion had been, every place we touched grounding me and undoing me all at once.

I could feel the unmistakable rigid length of him against my stomach, and a helpless whine slipped from my lips at the contact, so thick with desperation that I barely recognized it as my own.

The sound shattered the spell.

He jerked back suddenly, as though he'd been startled awake. Then, with a rough inhale, he tore himself away. His hand slipped from my waist. The heat of him vanished all at once as he put several paces between us, breathing hard.

For the briefest instant, I caught the last traces of desire still burning in his eyes as I swayed where I stood, reeling in his absence. Then they vanished, his expression turning to stone, every flicker of longing buried beneath a mask of cold wrath.

He turned sharply and crossed the chamber, his feet splashing in the rising water.

He seized the slime-covered rope and pulled, hand over hand.

He hauled the bucket onto the lip of the well, the liquid inside sloshing over the rim.

Blood struck the water at his feet, blooming outward like spilled ink before dissipating almost at once.

Rìan didn't hesitate. He plunged both hands into the bucket before lifting them to his mouth.

They emerged coated in blood, glistening to the wrists like crimson gloves as he drank deeply.

Thin streams spilled from the corners of his lips, winding over his jaw and down the strong column of his throat.

When he lifted his eyes to mine, he looked like the monster from the Veil, silver flashing through the darkness there in a violent, seething swirl.

"Drink." The word cracked through the chamber, a command, not a request.

It drove into my chest like a blade.

He slid his tongue across his lips, drawing every last trace of blood into his mouth as though it could wash away the memory of touching me—even in a vision neither of us had chosen. As though I were nothing more than a bitter taste he could rinse away.

My breath hitched, perilously close to a sob—but that couldn't be right. I didn't care for him. Not one bit.

My body was still quivering in the wake of my release—a release born of an illusory touch, a fleeting glimpse of what it might feel like to be held by him for real.

Gods strike me dead.

Shame rushed over me all at once: every breathless sound I'd made, every shiver I'd failed to suppress, every shameful part of myself the well had stripped bare for him to witness—and to despise.
