Chapter 3 High Basin #2
I was out of bed in three seconds. Pulled on jeans, shoved my feet into boots, no shirt, the night air cool against my chest. I moved through the house without turning on lights, the muscle memory of four years navigating this space in the dark guiding my feet around the furniture and through the kitchen door and across the porch.
Compass was already there, standing at the rail, her one ear pointed north, her body rigid.
The truck was a shape in the darkness. A quarter mile out, maybe more, moving along the track that connected the main road to the leased property. No lights. No reflectors. Just the low growl of the diesel and the faint crunch of tires on gravel carried to me on the still night air.
I could have taken the truck. My F-250 was parked twenty feet away, keys on the hook inside the door. But a truck engine would be audible for a mile in this silence, and whoever was driving without headlights at three in the morning wasn't someone I wanted to announce myself to.
I went to the barn instead.
Rio was the horse I chose. My reddish-brown gelding, one of my earliest rescues.
He'd been a working ranch horse before his previous owner went bankrupt, and the years of cow work had made him calm, quiet, and surefooted in the dark.
I bridled him without a saddle—the leather warm from the ambient heat of the barn, the metal of the bit clicking softly against his teeth as he accepted it.
I led him out through the back door, away from the house, and mounted from the fence rail.
We moved north at a walk. No trot, no canter.
A walk, the hoofbeats soft in the grass, the sound absorbed by the open ground the way Montana absorbed everything—completely, without echo.
Rio's ears swiveled forward and locked, nostrils flaring at something on the wind I couldn't name.
The truck had stopped, but whatever it had brought was still out there.
The night was clear. Stars thick enough to cast shadows, the Milky Way smeared across the sky.
The mountains to the north were black silhouettes against a slightly less black sky.
I navigated by landmark: the old cottonwood where the property line bent east, the stock pond that reflected starlight, the gate in the fence that marked the boundary between my working acreage and the land I leased to Bridger Valley Livestock.
The gate was open. It was never open. I kept it latched, and the lease agreement specified that the tenant was responsible for maintaining the fence line and gate on their section.
The open gate was wrong the way everything about the last three days had been wrong—quietly, undeniably, with the patience of a system that didn't care if you noticed.
I rode through. Rio's hooves found the dirt track on the other side and he followed it without guidance, his body relaxed, his head low, the steady walk of a horse who'd done night work before and didn't need to be told where the path was.
The building appeared after ten minutes of riding.
Set back from the track, surrounded by a gravel apron.
Large. Metal-sided, the corrugated panels catching just enough starlight to outline the shape: a standard agricultural storage building, maybe sixty feet long and forty wide.
Equipment storage. Hay. Feed. Nothing that would draw a second glance.
Except the truck parked beside it.
A white box truck, the kind used for furniture delivery or commercial transport. No markings. No license plate visible from my angle. The engine was off but the hood was warm—I could see the heat coming off it in the starlight, the faint shimmer of rising air above the metal.
And the building's side door was open. A thin strip of light falling onto the gravel, yellow and artificial, the light of a generator-powered lamp, and from inside, sounds.
Voices. Low, murmured, in Spanish. Multiple voices, overlapping, the cadence of people speaking in the compressed tones of exhaustion and fear.
A woman's voice, higher than the others, asking a question I couldn't make out.
A man's voice answering. The words were too quiet to catch from this distance, but the register was unmistakable.
I'd heard it overseas, in villages where the population had been told to cooperate or suffer, where every sentence was calculated against the cost of speaking it.
Beneath the voices: a generator. The low, persistent hum of a portable unit. And beneath the generator, a smell. Faint at this distance but present, carried to me on the night air with the same certainty that brought me the sage and the alfalfa and the warm earth.
The smell of too many people in too small a space. Sweat and fear and confinement. I knew that smell. I'd encountered it once, in a basement during a deployment, where our unit had found seventeen people locked in a room meant for four, and the smell had stayed in my sinuses for a week.
Rio shifted beneath me. His ears flattened. He could smell it too.
I didn't approach. Every instinct wanted me to ride up to that building and pull the door open and see what was inside.
But I was one man on a horse, and I didn't know how many people were in that building or how many of them were armed.
I didn't know if the driver was inside or sitting in the cab watching the road.
I didn't even know who was running this—whether it connected to High Basin, to the leased acreage, to something else entirely.
I needed evidence before I did anything that couldn't be undone.
I turned Rio south. Walked him back the way we'd come, slowly, carefully, retracing the path through the grass.
The gate in the fence. The stock pond. The old cottonwood.
The barn, where I slipped Rio's bridle off and gave him an extra scoop of grain because he'd earned it, and he ate it with the calm indifference of a horse who didn't understand why his rider's hands were trembling.
I sat in the kitchen. The clock on the stove read 3:15 AM. Compass found me and pressed against my leg, her flank warm and solid, her breathing slow and steady in the quiet of the room.
What I knew: there was a building on my property full of people who didn't want to be there.
A truck had delivered them in the night.
The voices spoke Spanish—the way my workers spoke Spanish, the way some of my mother's friends back in El Paso had spoken Spanish.
The smell was confinement. The sound was fear.
What I couldn't prove: anything. Not yet. Not alone.
I pulled out my phone. Blade's response was still there on the screen. The coordinates for the bar. Three days, he'd written. Tomorrow was day three.
I typed nothing. I think there are people locked in a building on my ranch was a sentence that required a face and a voice and the ability to watch the other person's eyes when you said it. Text was too thin for this weight.
I stared at the phone. At the coordinates. At the name on the screen that still made something in my chest pull tight like a rope around a post when the animal on the other end decides to run.
Tomorrow I'd drive to eastern Idaho. Five hours of highway.
I'd sit across from the man I'd spent years remembering and dreaming about, and I'd tell him everything—the workers, the long sleeves, the phone call, the building, the smell.
And he'd look at me the way he used to look at terrain maps in the briefing room at Bragg, his dark eyes moving fast, the angles calculating behind them, the mind working at a speed that made other men feel like they were standing still.
He'd know what to do. He always knew what to do. That was the terrifying thing about him—the certainty. The way he moved through the world with the confidence of a blade that had been sharpened so many times it no longer remembered what dull felt like.
I got up from the table. Walked through the dark house to the bedroom.
Packed a bag. Jeans, shirts, a toothbrush, the Beretta M9 gun I kept in the lockbox on the top shelf of the closet.
Ranger habit. I hadn't fired it in two years, but the weight was familiar in my hand, and whatever I was driving toward tomorrow was not a situation that called for arriving unarmed.
I set the alarm for six. Two and a half hours of sleep if I was lucky.
Compass jumped onto the bed and settled against my hip, her body warm and her breathing slow, and I lay in the dark and listened to the silence and thought about the voices in the building and the boy who wouldn't roll up his sleeves.
Morning came cool and gray, the temperature dropping enough overnight that the grass held dew and the air had an edge to it before the sun cleared the ridgeline.
I was up before the alarm. Coffee made. Bag by the door.
I walked to the bunkhouses at six-thirty and found the workers already awake, already dressed, already in their white long-sleeved shirts.
All twelve of them standing in the gray light, waiting.
The beds behind them untouched. I'd started checking every morning, and every morning the answer was the same: sheets smooth, pillows straight, not a crease out of place.
They slept on top of the blankets, I'd realized.
They slept in their clothes, on top of the made beds, because they'd been conditioned to be ready to move at a moment's notice and an unmade bed was evidence of comfort, and comfort was not something they'd been taught to expect.
I found Danny at the equipment shed.
"I need to leave for a couple of days." I handed him the list I'd written at the kitchen table. Feeding schedules, water routines, fence sections that needed checking. "Everything's on here. The crew knows the work. Just make sure they eat, Danny. Lunch and dinner. Don't let them skip it."
Danny took the list and looked at it the way he looked at everything—thoroughly, slowly, with the careful attention of someone raised to do things right. "Where you headed?"
"South. Personal business."
He nodded. Didn't push. That was one of the things I valued about Danny—he understood that some questions were invitations and some were walls, and he could tell the difference.
"The new crew," he ventured after a moment, folding the list and tucking it into his shirt pocket. "They're good workers."
"They are."
"They're quiet though. Like, real quiet. Most crews I've worked with, you get guys who joke around, give each other shit, play music during lunch. These folks don't do any of that. They just..." He trailed off, searching for the word.
"Work," I finished for him.
"Yeah. Just work. All day. Like machines." He shifted his weight. "Is that normal? For H-2A crews?"
I looked at him. Twenty-three and perceptive—a combination that could either keep him safe or get him hurt depending on how the next few weeks unfolded.
"Keep an eye on them for me," I told him instead of answering. "If the guy from High Basin shows up—the field rep, clean boots—you call me immediately. Don't let him take anyone off the property. Don't let him talk to the workers without you present. Can you do that?"
Danny's expression shifted. The easygoing ranch kid recalibrating into something more alert. "Yeah. Yeah, I can do that." A pause. "Logan, is something—"
"Just watch. That's all I'm asking. Watch and call."
He nodded again, slower this time, and I could see the questions forming behind his eyes. I left before they broke.
The F-250 started on the first turn. The old blue Ford backed out of the gravel drive with a familiar rattle, the tires crunching, the dogs watching from the porch.
Compass stood at the top of the steps with her one ear forward and her eyes locked on the truck.
I'd never left her for more than a day. The heeler who'd been abandoned once, watching the one person who'd never abandoned her drive away.
"I'll be back," I told her through the open window.
The ranch shrank in the rearview mirror.
The barn, the bunkhouses, the main house, the fences stretching out in every direction.
The north acreage was invisible from this angle, the building hidden behind the roll of the hills, but I could feel it there—present, waiting, like a bruise I hadn't pressed yet.
I turned south onto the county road. The highway waited ten miles ahead, and beyond the highway, five hours of open road through the mountain passes of western Montana and into eastern Idaho.
At the end of that road was a bar, and inside, a man I hadn't seen in what felt like an eternity. Dark eyes, fast hands, a body built for speed and a mind that had never met a problem it couldn't cut through.
The highway opened ahead—flat and straight and long, the morning light climbing the sky behind me and painting the rearview mirror gold.
My hands were steady on the wheel. The rest of me wasn't.
