Chapter 36
Chapter Thirty-Six
Samantha
I heard the front door open and swallowed hard. I wasn’t sure how his reaction would be to the news, and I braced myself.
“You sure are a sight for sore eyes.” Wes stepped into the kitchen and wrapped his arms around me.
“Bad day?” I asked, hugging him tightly.
“Yeah. Everything that could go wrong, did.”
Great. Now I was about to make his bad day even worse.
“How was your day?” he asked, walking into the living room and pouring a drink. I followed behind.
“Oh, interesting.”
“Oh yeah?” he smiled. “What happened that was so interesting?”
I reached inside my sweater pocket, pulled out the stick, and handed it to him. He looked at it, turned it upside down, then right side up. I stood there with furrowed brows.
“What is this?” he asked.
“Seriously? It’s a pregnancy test,” I said.
“Right. It appears to be. Why are there two lines?”
“Are you being serious right now?” I nervously laughed.
“I’ve never been more serious in my life.” He stared at me.
“It means I’m pregnant.”
“We’re having a baby?” His eyes widened as the color drained from his face. Maybe Zoey was right. Wes was going to pass out.
“It looks that way.”
He quickly dropped to the couch.
“Are you okay?” I frowned.
“I don’t know. You handed me a tiny plastic stick and changed my entire life.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. “Well, I was hoping for a slightly more romantic reaction.”
“We’re having a baby.” A wide grin spread across his face for the shock must have worn off.
“We are.” I smiled.
He stood from the couch and paced around the room. “Okay. Okay.”
“What do you mean by ‘okay’?”
He ran his hand through his hair. “We need a doctor, a crib, maybe even a bigger car. Yes, we’ll have to get rid of the Bentley. I’ll get on that first thing tomorrow.”
“Wes.” I grabbed his hands. “Breathe.”
He took in a couple of deep breaths, dropped to his knees, and rested his hands on my belly.
“You’re having my baby. My baby. I’m going to be a dad.”
“And an excellent one.” I ran my fingers through his hair.
“Wow. He spiraled faster than I thought he would.” I heard a voice from the stairs.
Wes and I looked up at Zoey sitting on the stairs, eating popcorn.
“How long have you been there?” I cocked my head.
“Long enough to know Wes doesn’t understand how a pregnancy test works.” She laughed.
“In my defense, no one prepares you for this.” Wes pointed at her.
She popped another piece of popcorn in her mouth and got up from the step.
“Actually, they do. It’s called health class. So how long before you hit up the bookstore and buy every parenting book they have and baby-proof a house that doesn’t need baby-proofing for at least six months?”
“I’d say we start tomorrow,” Wes said.
“See? I told you he’d lose his mind.” Zoey smiled.
“I’m still in shock.” Wes threw his arms out to the side.
Zoey walked up to him and patted his chest. “You’ll be okay, Daddy.”
Weston
I couldn’t sleep. Not that I expected to after hearing the news.
I was lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, while Sam slept beside me, her head resting on my chest. She was pregnant with my child.
A baby. An actual human being who would rely on me for everything.
Then memories of my father crept up, and the way he used to kneel beside my bed every night and ask me what my favorite part of my day had been.
The way he’d leave work early for my little league games, and help me with my homework when I couldn’t figure it out.
I only had eight years with him. But I’d learned a lot in the short time we had together. I just didn’t know it because my mind was corrupted by my grandparents after my parents’ death. A baby. The heir to Castile Properties. The thought excited me, but terrified me at the same time.
Sam stirred, and my arm around her tightened. I was already protective of her, and now, even more so. My family of three would soon turn into a family of four. With a teenager and a baby in the house, things were about to get very interesting.
