Chapter 8 Following Shadow

I helped my Girlfriend to the bedside and tucked in the blanket for her.

"You should sleep early. I need to go out again later."

Her fingertips gently stroked the blanket. There was a trace of surprise in her tone.

"You have to go out again? Is it that busy tonight?"

"Yeah. Maybe because of the rain, there are a lot of emergency repairs."

I deliberately changed the subject and turned off the bedroom light, leaving only the small night lamp on.

"Okay. Be safe and come back soon."

Her voice softened in the darkness.

Only after I heard steady breathing coming from the bedroom did I quietly slip out.

The corpse at the living room entrance was still in the same position.

I struggled to stuff it into the Suitcase.

This person was much fatter than the last one. The zipper got stuck halfway.

I had to press down on the corpse's shoulders.

Only then did I hear a soft click.

When I locked the door again, I deliberately looked at the Peephole.

The half Finger was still properly embedded inside.

Like a silent nail.

The motion-sensor lights in the Stairwell flickered on and off.

The Suitcase wheels bumped against the edges of the steps, making a rhythmic thudding sound.

Just as I reached the fourth floor, I suddenly stopped.

I whipped my head around and looked upward.

The stairwell stayed dim.

But the chill on my fingertips told me that at the corner above the stairs, a figure was pressed against the wall...

quietly following me.
