Chapter 14 The New Bracelet

She took the bracelet and ran her Finger over every link.

After a long moment she looked up and smiled like a flower opening to sunlight.

"You always remember the things I like."

I smiled and slid a piece of cake toward her.

My Girlfriend picked up the fork but did not eat right away.

"You seemed especially busy today," she said thoughtfully.

"Yeah, I took a few emergency jobs."

"It's rare for you to make it back on time for my birthday."

Her tone sounded playful.

I could tell she was testing me.

After the cake I poured two cups of hot milk in the kitchen.

When I returned, my Girlfriend sat on the sofa holding the new gold bracelet without wearing it.

"Don't like it?" I asked.

"I do. I'm just afraid of losing it again."

I smiled and said nothing more.

I handed her one cup and took a sip from mine before setting it on the coffee table.

Her fingertips brushed mine as she took the cup. The touch was ice cold.

She kept her head slightly lowered, a faint smile on her lips as if deep in thought.

I turned and walked into the kitchen to wash the dishes.

The sound of running water and clinking plates covered everything.

I quietly took out my phone and opened the Security Camera Feed.

I often checked it behind her back.

Because the version of her on the Security Camera Feed was someone else entirely.
