CHAPTER 11 #2
"Stand here. Look at this." He tapped a rhythmic beat on the wood with a heavy silver pen. "I’m not looking for a secretary. I’m looking for an analyst."
I moved to his side, hyper-aware of the heat radiating from his large frame.
I stood so close my shoulder was almost touching his.
He pulled up a highly classified file titled PROJECT CERBERUS.
It was a detailed map of the port of Newark, highlighting a specific shipment of medical supplies flagged for a secondary customs inspection.
"Trenton moved the strike team to Pier 42," Leon stated flatly, bringing up my corrupt handler's name like he was discussing the weather. "They’re using a ghost sweep. You won't see them on the standard radar."
He was showing me the guts of his entire operation. This was the ultimate loyalty test. If I helped him, I crossed the line from victim to criminal collaborator. If I didn't, I was dead weight.
I leaned in closer to the screen, staring at the pixelated glare of the spreadsheet. I bit down hard on the inside of my cheek until the sharp, metallic tang of blood flooded my mouth. I needed the pain to keep me grounded.
Leon turned the monitor directly toward me and went perfectly still. He was waiting for me to bridge the gap. He wanted the tactical insight that only my Quantico training could provide. He wanted me to betray my former brothers in arms to protect his profit margins.
"How would they approach a breach, Alessia?" he asked softly, the silence in the room suddenly deafening. "Tell me how they think."
My brain screamed in protest, paralyzing me. This was treason. Real, actionable treason.
Seeing me waver, Leon didn't yell. He didn't threaten.
He just reached out and placed his large, heavy hand squarely on the back of my thigh.
His thumb began to slowly stroke the expensive fabric of my trousers.
The sheer sensory overload of the gesture short-circuited my moral panic.
It was a heavy, grounding touch that reminded me exactly whose reality I lived in now.
I let out a shaky breath and moved my hand, instinctively covering his. My fingers curled tightly around his large, bruised knuckles.
"They aren't coming for you, Alessia. I am the only one holding the door shut," he murmured, his thumb continuing its hypnotic rhythm. "Help me help you."
The last fraying thread of my resistance snapped. The Bureau left me to die. Leon was the one keeping me breathing.
I leaned over the desk, my auburn hair falling forward to shield my face as I pointed to a specific coordinate on the tactical map. I traced the route on the touch-screen, leaving a faint streak of oil on the cool glass.
"You’re looking at it wrong. They don't use the satellite for the final mile," I said, my voice losing its tremor and hardening into the cold, analytical edge of a lead investigator. "If you hit the frequency at 400 megahertz, you'll blind them for sixty seconds. That’s all you need."
Leon’s hands flew over the keyboard, a rapid-fire clicking filling the room as he adjusted the parameters.
I pushed away from the desk, pacing a small circle in the open space behind his chair.
The adrenaline hit me like a drug. It felt incredible to let my mind run at full speed without the suffocating constraints of federal red tape, warrants, and bureaucracy.
I was off the leash. My hands gestured sharply as I outlined the counter-strategy, dismantling the FBI playbook piece by piece.
"Trenton is predictable. He’ll go for the pincer move," I fired off, eyes locked on the map. "Give me the manifest. I can reroute the entire fleet by midnight."
I stopped pacing, catching my breath as the tactical dump finished. My chest heaved slightly, the electric energy in the air making my skin prickle.
Leon slowly stood up, his leather chair rolling back with a quiet whine. A terrifying, deeply proud smirk crossed his face. He didn't speak immediately. He just stared at me, drinking in the sight of a completely compromised federal agent running his empire better than his own lieutenants.
"Brilliant," he finally said, his voice dripping with dark satisfaction. "They had a Ferrari and treated it like a tricycle. Their loss."
Before I could process the praise, he moved.
He reached out, his massive hands gripping my waist with punishing force.
He pulled me forward and forcefully guided me back as he sat on the edge of the heavy desk, pulling me effortlessly right between his legs and onto his lap.
The abrupt physical dominance anchored me instantly.
I gasped, my hands flying up to land on his broad shoulders, my fingers digging into the high-quality wool of his jacket.
"Sit. You’ve earned a rest," he said, staring up at me with eyes that burned like blue fire. "You’re exactly what I thought you’d be."
He didn't just want my mind; he wanted total ownership of the package. He wanted me to know I was a partner in strategy, but I still belonged to him in the flesh.
"You're far more useful than a file, Alessia," he growled, sliding one hand around to the back of my head, his fingers tangling roughly in my hair. He pulled me down, tilting my head back until my neck was completely taut. "Tell me you're mine. Say it while you're sitting in my lap."
I exposed my throat to him, a gesture of absolute, undeniable surrender. I didn't even fight the pull. "I'm yours."
He claimed my mouth with a heavy, possessive kiss.
It wasn't the desperate, violent clashing of last night.
This was a king sealing a pact. His tongue pushed past my lips, rough and demanding, tasting the blood I had drawn from my own cheek.
The grip of his hand on my waist held me flush against the hard lines of his body, making me hyper-aware of exactly how much power he was holding back.
I melted into his hold, the ragged sound of our shared breathing echoing in the quiet office.
"Mine," he muttered against my lips, breaking the kiss just enough to speak. "Don't ever look back, Alessia. There’s nothing left for you there."
He kept his forehead pressed firmly against mine, our breathing synchronizing perfectly. He lifted his other hand and casually brushed his thumb over my swollen lower lip.
"We have a meeting with Ivy and the others in an hour," he stated, shifting effortlessly back into the cold, calculated boss of the syndicate. "You’re going to show them exactly why I kept you alive."
He gripped my waist and stood up, lifting me with him and setting me firmly on my own two feet.
The sudden rush of cooler air against my skin snapped my brain back to reality.
I was going to sit at a table with the very criminals I had hunted for three years.
If they saw a single hint of the FBI agent left in my eyes, they would put a bullet in my head before Leon could stop them.
I stood straight, squaring my shoulders and naturally mirroring his stoic, lethal posture. I wasn't Alessia Heller, Special Agent, anymore. That woman died yesterday.
"I'll be ready," I said, my voice deadpan.
"Then let's go move some cargo."
