“You can’t be serious right now.” I laugh, shaking my head at my long-time best friend, Arely.
“I’m totally and completely serious right now. You are going to find the man of your dreams, and he’s going to be tall, dark-haired, and completely hot,” Arely states, her tone serious but her expression that of amusement.
“I know you read other people’s fortunes, but you can’t read mine.
I keep telling you this. I don’t want to know.
I also don’t need or want some man that you claim is the man of my dreams.” I have enough on my plate.
I’m good with what I have in my life. There’s no room for a man.
Especially if he’s tall, dark, and completely hot, he’d be nothing more than a distraction.
“Well, excuse me if I decided to read your cards and see what you have in store.”
Ugh, this is what I get for having a psychic for a best friend.
Arely and I have known each other for years.
Since fifth grade, to be exact, when her parents moved to Ashborne.
Later, after graduating high school, she and I went to the same college and even moved to Redwich together.
It’s not a big town, but the county is huge.
It’s big enough that they even have a nightclub.
You’d think with it supposedly being classified as a small town, there wouldn’t be anything to do, but there is.
There are several places to go for the nightlife.
Shops to shop, all mostly mom and pop, but who cares.
Bonus, the mall isn’t that far off either.
“I already know what’s in store for me. To be the longest living virgin ever,” I say jokingly.
But it was true. Here I was, twenty-nine years old and still a virgin.
When it comes to men, we never work out.
It’s hard to find a man who can handle me.
That’s not me being conceited, I’m not the type of person who thinks they have it all or are all that.
I try to be the nicest person I can be. It’s the way my mom raised me to be.
Plus, there are enough people out there in the world who are mean and evil to others around them, with how just plain ol’ self-absorbed they can be.
All they think about is looking out for themselves.
What I mean by them handling me is the fact that I’m both smart and talented.
All gifted traits from my dad. A dad that I can’t let anyone know is my dad.
This really sucks because I truly do love him, and I’m thankful to him.
Though there are just a few who know he’s my dad.
Arely being one of them knows because, well, she’s a psychic.
Her mother is an Oracle. I had permission to speak about him with her, granted, we don’t normally.
Just because I love my dad, it doesn’t mean I don’t sometimes hate him.
Not for the gifts he portrayed upon me when I was born, but because I can’t let anyone know who my dad really is.
Because I have to keep the secret of where I come from.
Everyone has to think I’m a simple human and not the daughter of Apollo.
When I was born, my mom, being human, had fallen for his beauty. According to her, it was love at first sight. She’d been unable to stop herself, though she did resist at first. She hadn’t known he was Apollo. At the time, he’d called himself ‘Alex’. Only after I was born did he tell her the truth.
Unfortunately, when I was seventeen, my mom was killed.
My dad had been furious. It was Arely’s mom who explained what happened to my mom and why.
A woman scorned and jealous of my mom for the attention Apollo gave her took her life.
Apollo had seen to it that nothing happened to me during the time.
It was when I turned twenty-five, he gave me nectar of the gods, which only after did he tell me that it was so that I would become immortal. No one could kill me unless it were by beheading or having my heart ripped from my body. Weird as that is, I didn’t think it would happen.
I never asked him to do this for me. I was fine with living a dying human life, but he wasn’t. Out of all of his children he’d had in the eons and centuries, I was one of his favorites. I was special to him, precious.
“I doubt you’ll be a virgin for much longer. I believe that maybe this very night you could meet the man who’s going to sweep you off your feet,” Arely says a bit dramatically, pulling me out of my thoughts.
I give Arely a quizzical look. She’s got to be joking.
There’s no way I’m meeting some guy and ending up being swept off my feet tonight or any night.
“What’s going to happen tonight, Arely, is I’m going home, changing into my Nightmare Before Christmas jammies, getting a nice cup of hot tea, and putting on a movie.
I’m thinking tonight will be a Kill Bill kinda night. Wanna join?”
“Ugh, yeah, I’m good. I’ve watched enough Quentin Tarantino movies.” This is true. I do love my Quentin Tarantino movies.
“Well, what can I say?” I shrug, smiling. “He makes good movies.”
“Whatever floats your boat, doll face.” Arely snorts and scrunches her nose. “You have fun with your movie. I’ll catch you later.”
“You know it. I’ll call you tomorrow,” I retort, smiling at my best friend.
I turn away from her and make my way down the street, thinking about what I’m going to eat for dinner.
Maybe I’ll do a sandwich and soup. The weather has been somewhat colder than usual, but it doesn’t bother me like it does others.
Still, I’m not sure if that’s what I’d want for dinner. I could order something from the diner and have it delivered. Or I could pick up something on the way home.
No, none of those sounds like a good idea.
Honestly, I don’t want to do anything but curl up in the corner of my couch and read.
I’m just going to turn my stereo on, listen to music, and read a book.
I’m a total book nerd. Give me anything that was written about vampires and shifters any day.
It’s not that I don’t know they exist. I’m not supposed to, but how can they not?
I mean, I’m the flipping daughter of Apollo, so why not have vampires and other supernatural beings?
Plus, I live in Redwich, it’s known for supernatural beings like shifters. A friend of mine who comes to the library I work at in town even said something about it being the home of shifters when she saw the book I was reading.
Walking down the street leading to the neighborhood I live in, I don’t bother being worried about it being dark out.
Or that I had to pass the nightclub, Dyrk, to get home.
It’s the same path I’ve taken every day.
Dyrk always seems to send a shiver down my spine when I walk by.
Not because it is creepy. The place seems to want to lure me in, and every time I pass, I resist the urge to go in.
Many times, I’ve passed by it and I’ve seen the men who go in. All of them are beautiful.
I like to think of it as a vampire bar, but I couldn’t confirm it.
Redwich was classified as a small town, and it had the feel of it, but there was still quite a bit of nightlife and restaurants to go around. Though it was mostly a café, and three restaurants. Still, that’s a good variety in my opinion. Nightlife, being events they have in town or Dyrk.
There were also two garages where you could take your car, one on either side of town. We had two grocery stores, a drug store, a dollar store, a few local boutiques, nothing fancy, a flower shop, and several other shops around the town.
Redwich might be a small town, but it held a large county.
I once asked someone about how it worked with the small town and large county when they came into the library.
Part of the town was zoned as city area while the rest was county.
Though instead of treating it like two different they just called it the Town of Redwich.
I guess this was a good thing.
The town also was the home of two motorcycle clubs, and for a while, those clubs, I knew, were rivals. Talk around town is they were no longer rivals but allies.
Who knows what caused this. That part no one knows. Still, it doesn’t matter. As long as there’s peace within the town, I was good.
I loved Redwich because I loved being able to walk wherever I was going.
This was good since I didn’t have a car.
Not that I couldn’t have one, it’s a choice of mine.
I don’t need to drive. Driving from place to place might make things simpler, but it’s not simpler by any means.
If I wanted to go to the mall in Ashborne, Arely was always willing to drive us there, and we’d make a day of it.
To me, driving was not a necessity. I didn’t want to drive and take the chance on the roads. Too many accidents happen. I was perfectly fine with using my feet to get me everywhere I needed to go. Didn’t matter to me if it took longer.
I love to be able to walk around town and smell the fresh air. Catch sight of the birds in the trees chirping. See the squirrels running from branch to branch.
I love being on foot just because I don’t miss a thing around me.
Coming up on Dyrk, that familiar shiver rushes along my spine. My mind goes back to what Arely had said about me meeting the man of my dreams tonight. Maybe he was in there. Waiting for me to come find him.
Yeah right.
“There’s no man for me,” I scoff, kicking a pebble with my shoe. “I’m not going to find anyone who understands me. I’m destined to be alone and die the very same way. Alone.”
The feeling of being watched hits me, and I stop walking in order to glance around my surroundings, not seeing anyone or anything out of place.
Still, the feeling doesn’t go away. It lingers and doesn’t go away even when I pick up pace.
Just because I’m immortal doesn’t mean I don’t feel fear of something happening to me.
I shrug it off as my imagination getting to me. Nothing is going to happen to me. There’s nothing out here that will hurt me. It’s all in my head. No one is watching me.
It’s time for me to get home before I allow myself to become totally freaked out at nothing.
