Chapter 4 #2

I was given a room with its own bathroom, which was nice.

I wouldn’t have to share. My tattoo flared with a little burn as I looked around.

It was hard to tell how close Sammy was, but she lived in this town and worked with this clan, so she could be quite close, which would make me feel her all that much more.

“Thanks. I’ll just get settled in.” He turned to leave, but I stopped him as the sound of the children laughing and playing drifted up the stairs.

“Do you think a witch-dragon hybrid child would be okay? I mean, what kind of power would the kid have?”

Anthony raised his eyebrows and sucked in a deep breath.

“I think the ladies have been debating that pretty hard since Livvie found out she was pregnant. Like I said before, we’ll have to wait and see.

” He hesitated with one hand on the door.

“I wouldn’t tell Sammy you’re this curious about babies.

She might spell your balls to infertility. ”

I laughed, but then sobered quickly. “Wait, do you think she’s actually powerful enough to do that?”

Anthony’s chuckle was uneasy as he scratched his head. “I’m honestly not sure just how far Sammy’s magic reaches. But I wouldn’t say it’s impossible.”

I was rarely one to feel fright, but the idea that she could do something like that was truly terrifying to me. “She’s really that powerful?”

Anthony met my gaze. “Sammy Black is the strongest witch in a lifetime. Maybe longer. I assume you know a bit about her old coven, but she’ll have to be the one to tell you her full story. In short, yes. She’s that powerful, however you want to measure it.”

He turned to leave again. “Don’t dawdle too long. There’s a clan meet tonight to welcome your visit.”

After I closed the door, I looked around for a minute, then checked out the view as I pulled my phone out of my pocket to text Gage.

I loved the mountains, but this really was a gorgeous landscape. I understood the draw.

Gage wanted me to send any and all information about the clan I could. Knowing I was here to spy made me feel like I was betraying a brother or something, which was weird, because Gage was the closest thing to a brother I’d ever had. I’d be betraying him by not telling him anything I’d learned.

I’m here safe.

He replied in seconds. Good. Learn anything yet?

Anthony wants it kept quiet. He doesn’t want a lot of people descending on Bluewater.

Gage was like me. We both hated ‘text speak’ and would rather just take the time to type it out.

Understandable.

Gage wouldn’t blab. He wasn’t that sort. It was silly, my hesitancy, because I knew Gage and knew damn well that he had honorable intentions.

The whole clan is mated. And ten of them are fated.

Gage didn’t respond right away this time. I unpacked my backpack and used the bathroom before I got a reply. Flopping down on the bed, I unlocked the phone to read his reply.

Are you sure?

Anthony says so. I’ll meet more of them tonight.

Let me know.

I dozed off as I worried a little about meeting the entire clan my first night here. There’d been a reason I’d jumped from clan to clan so much. I didn’t get along with other dragons, not in large groups. It never felt like I fit.

I dozed off and had the strangest dream. I was running through the woods with a group of boys. It was the opposite of a nightmare. All the emotions flowing through me during the dream were positive. Home. Love. Joy. Acceptance.

When I woke, my eyes were damp with tears and a sob stuck in my throat.

What the hell? What did it mean? I’d never seen those boys before in my life.

The sun was beginning to sink over the water. My ears picked up the sound of vehicles approaching. Time to go join the family.

I ran a quick comb through my hair and went downstairs, but the house was empty. I didn’t want to be snooping around, so I went right outside.

Just off the front porch, a group of guys stood in a circle talking. When I shut the front door, they all turned to look at me.

“Ah, hey, Blaze. Come on out.” Anthony waved me over, but the guy standing beside him stared at me like he’d seen a ghost.

“Knox?” he asked.

I looked around, wondering if there was someone else nearby that ne was looking at, but it was just me.

With a shrug, I went down the porch steps, but now Anthony was staring at me with the same dumbfounded expression as his friend.

I opened my mouth to ask what was going on, but we were interrupted by a loud, irritated, kind of harsh voice. But the sound of it was like a balm to my soul.

Grinning, I whipped my head around to see my mate standing near Anthony’s truck. “Stop standing around like idiots,” she said. “I’ve got things to do.”

She met my gaze and stalked forward. I couldn’t keep the stupid smile off my face at seeing her again.

“If you ever utter the word baby again,” Sammy said in a low, threatening voice. The smile slipped off my face in a hurry. “I’ll castrate you.”

I glanced at Anthony, who still looked pale, but he shook his head. “Not me.”

“The oversized lizard didn’t tell me. He didn’t have to. This is my territory. I know everything that goes on, and you’d do well to remember it.”

With that, she turned and walked toward the cliffs.

And my smile returned.
