Chapter 10 #2

“Shit, Benny, this must be our lucky day. There are four of them. I call the blonde.”

“You can have the blonde, and I’ll have the other three.” He cackles loudly.

I give Sage a look as if to say, Now do you see what I’m talking about? This place is not for you.

She looks up at me with pursed lips, but I can see from her eyes that she’s nervous.

“Fellas, why don’t you move it along?” I say in a deceptively simple voice as I step in front of Sage and then tap my hip. “We don’t want any trouble here tonight.”

“What trouble, man? We’re just looking for some fun.”

“Is there a problem here?” Brett makes his way over to me and assesses the situation. “These men giving you trouble, Dalton?”

“No. I think they were just about to leave.”

“We live here, bitch. We ain’t going nowhere.” Stringy-Hair Guy stumbles forward, beer still in hand, and stares at me. His face is full of pockmarks, and his eyes look dazed. Great, pretty sure he’s on more than just beer. “We’re just trying to have a good time.”

“I expect our cars to remain scratch-free.” I offer them a pleasant smile and step forward. “And no more comments toward our ladies, you hear?”

“I don’t see no rings. Benny, you see any rings?”

“Not a diamond in sight.” Benny chuckles and makes his way over to Lucia, but Roman stands in front of her. “Lady, you wanna—”

“She wants nothing to do with you,” Roman growls at him, and I know he’s ready to pounce. I know he’s just waiting for a signal, but I don’t want to do anything in front of the women. Especially not Sage and Rosie.

“Why don’t we ask her that?”

“Why don’t we not?” Brett steps forward, grabs Benny’s arm, and twists it behind his back until the man is whimpering like an injured animal. “Leave the ladies alone. My friends asked you nicely, and you didn’t listen. Unlucky for you, I’m not so nice.”

“Let me go, man. We was just joking,” Benny pleads with him while Stringy-Hair Guy takes a step back. When Brett finally releases his arm, Benny eyes him for a moment, clearly debating whether he wants to take a swing or not, but he steps back. “What are you, military or something?”

Brett looks back at the women instead of answering, and I notice that Rosie is looking at him with admiration and maybe lust. Never let it be said that a woman doesn’t like a strong man coming to her rescue.

“Are we going to check out this place or what?” Brett looks over at me, and I nod.

He and I both know this is not the place for Sage and Rosie, but I also know Sage won’t listen to reason or appreciate me making her stay somewhere else.

“Um, yes, let’s, uh, go check out the apartment.” Sage sounds breathless.

Lucia comes rushing over to her, a frown on her face. “You can’t stay here, Sage. It—”

“It’ll be fine,” Sage says. Not sure if she’s trying to convince the rest of us or herself. “Plus, I’ll get pepper spray for Rosie and me. We’ll be good to go.”

“I don’t even know how to use pepper spray,” Rosie moans, but stops when she sees the look Sage gives her. “I can learn though. Maybe you can teach me, Brett?” She smiles at him, but he says nothing.

“I can teach you,” Sage snaps at her sister, rolling her eyes. “It’s not hard. You don’t need a degree to pull up a tag and press a button.”

“Sorry, Ms. Harvard Graduate of Twenty-Never.” Rosie giggles, and Sage shakes her head.

“We really didn’t need all of you here, but thanks for the help. Let’s go and see the penthouse.”

Sage leads us to the front of the building, then makes a face. She mutters under her breath and looks up at the signs. “Wait, it’s this way. Sorry.”

She walks down a small pathway, and I stay at the back of the pack. When I see them stop outside a door, I spin around and head back toward the cars.

Stringy-Hair Guy and Benny have turned their music up even louder, and Snoop Dogg is now playing from their tinny speakers. They’ve moved on to the smoking portion of the night, and I watch as they pass a joint back and forth.

“Hey.”

I step toward them, and they both eye me warily. Good. I want them to be afraid of what I might do. I push my jacket back slightly so that they can see my holster, and their eyes widen even more.

“I just wanted to introduce myself.” I take another step forward.

“My name is Dalton. Dalton Leone. And, yes, if you’re wondering if I’m one of the Leones, I am.

” I offer them both a cold smile. “The ladies are my friends. If anything happens to them, their car, even their groceries or packages, I will hold you both accountable.” I let my jacket drop and tap my boot on the ground.

“I’m a nice guy, even a reasonable one, but I need to let you know as long as they live here, I will be around, and I will be a problem. ”

“We didn’t do nothing, man.” Benny looks nervous and takes a deep puff.

“Good.” I shift closer so he can see the whites of my eyes. “’Cause if I hear of anything happening by you or anyone else in this dump, the entire place is going to burn down—you hear me? Starting with your truck.” I look over at Stringy-Hair Guy. “You understand?”

“We got it,” they chorus and nod. I smile widely before stepping back.

“Good, good. Well, you have a nice evening, fellas. It was great chatting with you both.”

I turn around and head back to Sage’s apartment.

I’m hoping Sage will wise up and get out of here sooner rather than later, but just in case she’s stubborn as a mule, I’ve put them on notice.

I know these two guys work for Sal. That they’re lookouts for him and the dealings that go on here. They’ll get the word out.

No one messes with a Leone, and even though I am no longer a part of the family business, I still have sway. I only hope I won’t have to follow up on my words.
