Fated in the Stars Universe Secondary Gender 101
*This section contains spoilers.
Author’s Note on Gender & Inclusivity
The concept of secondary genders in this universe is a fictional element completely separate from real-world understandings of gender and gender expression. While terms like Alpha, Beta, Omega, and Enigma describe biological roles in Were society, they don’t dictate identity, personality, or someone’s worth.
I want to be very clear: gender—whether primary or secondary—is fluid, personal, and unique to every individual. This book isn’t here to reinforce outdated gender roles or rigid binary thinking. Instead, it explores a world where instincts, biology, and pack dynamics shape experiences in ways that are different from (but sometimes reflect) our own.
That said, just like in real life, this society has its preconceived ideas about roles and expectations. But Weres, like people, have the power to challenge, change, and reshape those biases. The world is evolving—both theirs and ours—and I love writing characters who push boundaries, rewrite the rules, and refuse to be boxed in.
At the end of the day, no one is defined solely by their gender. Weres are individuals first—complex, messy, strong, soft, fierce, and free to shape their own lives—just like us.
Thanks for being here. I hope you love this world as much as I do.

Understanding Secondary Genders
In the world of Fated in the Stars , every person is born with both a primary gender (male, female, or intersex) and a secondary gender (Alpha, Beta, Omega, Enigma, or other rare variations). Secondary genders influence biological instincts, hormonal cycles, and, in some cases, supernatural abilities.
While secondary genders come with distinct traits, every individual experiences them differently.
Alphas
Alphas are the dominant force within pack structures, embodying strength, leadership, and heightened instincts. They are often ruled by these instincts, particularly when it comes to protecting, providing for, and bonding with their mates. While not all Alphas choose to lead, they are naturally inclined toward pack hierarchy and often hold leadership positions.
Physical & Instinctual Traits:
Heightened Strength & Senses : Alphas are naturally stronger, faster, and more resilient than Betas and Omegas. They also possess enhanced scent detection, night vision, and reflexes.
Alpha-Voice: A commanding vocal tone that triggers instinctive obedience in most Weres, though certain individuals may be immune.
Biological Drive to Lead & Protect : Their instincts push them toward leadership or guardianship, but personal choice and personality still play a role.
Pack-Bond Sensitivity : Alphas experience deep pulls toward their bonded mates and pack members.
Mating & Reproduction:
Biannual Ruts : Alphas experience two ruts per year, where their sex drive, aggression, and possessiveness peak. This is a time of heightened fertility, but it can be managed with training and discipline.
Knots : Male Alphas have a knot that swells during climax, ensuring a secure bond and increasing the chances of conception. Female Alphas do not have penises or knots but experience similar hormonal cycles.
Female Alphas & Reproduction : Female Alphas can conceive and bear children but with extreme rarity. Their fertility rates are significantly lower than those of Betas or Omegas.
Unique to This Universe:
Transformation Ability : Alphas can turn humans into Weres through their bite. However, this is a sacred and highly regulated act.
Red Eyes Phenomenon : Alphas’ eyes glow red when instincts take over—whether from desire, rage, or deep protective urges.
Enigmas
Enigmas are an extremely rare subset of Alphas, exclusively male, exhibiting all standard Alpha traits but amplified. They are stronger, more instinct-driven, and more fertile than standard Alphas, making them both highly valued and sometimes feared within pack dynamics.
Traits That Set Enigmas Apart:
Stronger Instincts & Pack Sensitivity : They experience deeper connections to their mates and pack members.
Extreme Fertility: While standard Alphas have moderate fertility, Enigmas are uniquely capable of producing offspring at rates closer to Omegas.
Uncontrollable Ruts : Enigmas experience more intense rut cycles
Born to Excel : Enigmas naturally master whatever they pursue—combat, leadership, the arts, intellectual endeavors—often without effort.
Mood Alteration & Pheromone Control : Enigmas can influence the emotional atmosphere of a group through pheromones or scent.
Unique to This Universe:
Rare Births: Always male, Enigmas are born in fewer than one in 10,000 Weres.
Innate Leadership Magnetism: Whether they seek power or not, Enigmas naturally draw others to them.
Betas
Betas are the calm center of pack dynamics, known for their even tempers, intuition, and ability to keep the peace. Unlike Alphas and Omegas, they are not ruled by extreme instincts, making them the most level-headed secondary gender.
Traits That Set Betas Apart:
Calm & Steady Nature: Less prone to extreme hormonal shifts than Alphas or Omegas.
The Quiet Wolf: Unlike Alphas or Omegas, Beta inner-wolves are quieter, offering guidance rather than overwhelming instinct.
Omegas
Omegas were long thought to be extinct or purely mythical in Were society—existing only in fragmented records, whispered stories, and fading legends. For most of Book One, Nix is the only known Omega. However, by Book Two, it becomes clear that Omegas still exist, likely hidden or operating in secrecy for reasons yet to be uncovered.
Physical & Instinctual Traits:
Male-Exclusive: All known Omegas are biologically male with external genitalia and fully functional internal reproductive anatomy, including a uterus, Fallopian tubes, a cervix, ovaries, and a birth canal. (But no vagina.)
Self-Lubrication: Omegas produce slick, a natural lubricant, which assists during intimate bonding.
Mood Alteration & Pheromone Control : Omegas can influence the emotional atmosphere of a group through pheromones or scent.
Heightened Strength & Instincts: Omegas are naturally stronger, faster, and more resilient than typical Weres, with a deep connection to their inner wolf.
Brilliant & Cunning: They were known for their sharp instincts and intelligence, able to anticipate threats before they emerged.
Defenders of the Pack: Unlike Betas, who act as stabilizers, Omegas were active in pack defense, using both strategy and strength to protect their own.
Nix’s Unique Traits
While all Omegas share exceptional strength, intelligence, and healing abilities, Nix is even more extraordinary for reasons yet to be revealed. By the end of Book Two, he has demonstrated:
Enhanced Speed & Strength: Faster and stronger than even a typical Omega.
Rapid Healing: He recovers from injuries at an unnatural rate.
Pack Bond Perception: Unlike others, Nix can see his pack bonds in his mind’s eye, visually interpreting them as colors and light.
Deep Wolf Connection: His wolf is loud and more present in his mind than typical Weres experience.
Blue Eyes Activation: When his wolf is fully present, Nix’s eyes turn blue—a trait unique to him.
Immunity to Alpha-Voice: Unlike most other Weres, Nix is completely unaffected by an Alpha’s command.
Omega-Voice: Instead, Nix has his own commanding presence, an Omega-Voice capable of influencing others instinctually, much like an Alpha’s power.
Scent control: Nix can voluntarily suppress his scent entirely.
Unique to This Universe:
Most of Nix’s unique powers are unique to this universe while being unique in this universe.
The Myth Becomes Reality: Most Weres believe Omegas are long extinct, making Nix an anomaly and a revelation.
Hidden Omegas: By the end of Book Two, it is revealed that other Omegas still exist, living under the radar for reasons yet to be discovered.
The Rarity of Were Reproduction
Weres reproduce far more slowly than humans, making successful conception and pregnancy rare and highly valued. Most Weres only have one child per family or pack, with multiple offspring being an uncommon blessing.
Factors Influencing Low Birth Rates:
Fertility is Tied to Heats & Ruts: Unlike humans, Weres can only conceive during heats or ruts.
Longer Gestation Periods: Were pregnancies last significantly longer than human pregnancies, sometimes exceeding 42 weeks.
Pack Stability & Instinct: Many Weres unconsciously suppress their reproductive drives unless their environment is stable.
(Note: There are additional factors influencing Were fertility, but they remain unknown. Future books will examine this further.)
