Bonds of Starfall (Starfall #1)
Prologue The Mythos of Soulbonds
THE MYTHOS OF SOULBONDS
In the beginning, there were Stars.
Those Stars were ruled by Celestials. Before time was even a concept, the Celestials were content in their palace of speckled darkness.
Until eventually, the Celestials grew lonely. And like all lonely things, they yearned for companionship.
So, Souls were born.
The Celestials sent the Souls into the vastness of the universe, shaping planets and galaxies from nothing, gifting them bodies to inhabit—all so these Souls might have a place to call home.
Knowing the weight of loneliness, the Celestials granted the Souls a profound gift: the ability to love and remember, regardless of death.
And so, Soulbonds were formed.
These Soulbonds are Celestial-ordained ties between Souls. Cleaved into halves—or sometimes thirds, fourths, or even countless pieces—Soulbonds always find their way back to each other, regardless of time.
And knowing the weight of loneliness and waiting, the Celestials granted the Souls one last gift: the ability of not knowing. The memories of a Soul are to be locked away deep inside their minds, and only to be unlocked once they meet their Soulbonds. All to stave off the grief of waiting.
Upon the death of their physical form, Souls are returned to the Stars, to be reborn into the universe once more and experience the wonders of existing.
To seek, to love, to lose, and to live.
For what joy is life, if not death looming overhead as a comforting shadow?
