Chapter 25
The park at this hour is a fucking graveyard of living things.
A thick, cloying mist has rolled in, swallowing the wrought-iron fences and the skeletal remains of the autumn trees, turning everything into a blurred, grey smudge.
The air is frigid, a biting cold that doesn't just touch the skin—it sinks deep into the marrow, freezing the very breath in my lungs. Every snap of a twig sounds like a bone breaking; every rustle of the dead leaves feels like a ghostly finger brushing against my ankle. It’s oppressive, eerie, and perfectly suited for the state of my fucking head.
I sink onto a damp, rotting bench, the moisture seeping through my clothes, but I don't move.
I close my eyes and dive. I don't just think; I plunge headfirst into the abyss of my own consciousness, stripping away the layers of the 'doll' and the 'victim' until I reach the raw, pulsing core of who I am.
What I find there is a fucking wasteland.
Deep in my mind, there is no light, only a vast, echoing chamber of obsidian mirrors, each one reflecting a different version of my agony.
I see the blood—so much fucking blood—splattered across the floor of my childhood, the metallic scent of it choking me.
I find the shards of my shattered innocence, jagged and sharp, cutting into my palms as I try to gather them.
My heart isn't a heart anymore; it’s a blackened, shriveled thing, a piece of charcoal burnt to a crisp by years of terror and betrayal.
It doesn't beat; it thrums with a low, violent frequency, a rhythmic demand for retribution.
And my soul... my soul is a void. A hungry, gaping maw that has spent seven years starving.
I see the ghosts of my sisters, their faces frozen in that final, horrific scream, and I realize I don't feel pity anymore. I feel a kinship. I find a darkness there that is ancient and predatory, a dormant beast that has finally been woken up by the touch of a madman. It’s a cold, calculating hatred that tastes like copper and ash.
I realize that the 'good' Ophelia—the girl who wanted to be saved, the girl who cried in the dark—is dead.
She was murdered long ago, and the thing that replaced her is something far more dangerous.
I am a creature of the night, a parasite of pain, and I am finally, fucking finally, comfortable in the dark.
Then, I hear them.
The footsteps. Heavy, deliberate, echoing through the mist. I don't need to look. I know the cadence of that walk. I know the weight of that presence. He’s here.
He’s always here, a shadow that refuses to let me go.
He stops a few paces behind me, the silence between us vibrating with a tension so thick it’s almost tactile.
I don't stand up. I don't even turn around. I just stare into the grey void of the park and speak, my voice sounding foreign to my own ears—colder, sharper.
"I don't think you coming into my life was some random fucking fluke, Rhys," I whisper, the words cutting through the chill.
"Fate must have sensed the deepest, most rotting pain in my chest and decided I needed the scariest monster it could find.
Because only a monster like you could pull that pain out of me.
Only you could seek it out, drag it screaming into the light, and channel it like a fucking forge. "
I feel him shift behind me, his breathing steady, predatory.
"And out of that fire, I emerge reborn," I continue, a dark smile tugging at my lips.
"Exactly as I was meant to be. The moment you saw me—my wounded, fragile little heart—you knew, didn't you?
You knew you could break my already broken mind into a thousand pieces and put me back together as something that makes the rest of the world tremble.
You've spent this time slowly destroying the pain that kept me in the dark for seven years, only to replace it with a new darkness. Your darkness."
I let out a shaky, intoxicated breath. "And now that I’ve tasted it...
that fucking feeling... I feel like an ancient, beautiful, and grand part of you.
Something worthy to stand by your side while the world burns.
Something that has abandoned every shred of hesitation, mercy, and doubt.
I want to bury this new darkness deep into the hearts of every bastard who ruined my life.
I want to rip the breath from their lungs and bring back the only thing I actually desire: a destiny that favors the love of Rhys Castellan and annihilates everyone else. "
I stand up slowly and spin around to face him.
He looks like a god of death stepped out of a nightmare.
He’s dressed entirely in black—a long, sweeping coat that blends into the mist, tailored trousers, and boots that look like they’ve walked through a thousand slaughterhouses.
His skin is ghostly beautiful, contrasting sharply with the ink-black of his hair, which is slightly tousled by the wind.
But it’s his eyes that stop my heart—those piercing, obsessive eyes, wide and shimmering with a psychotic devotion that borders on religious.
He isn't just looking at me; he's consuming me.
“He that I love, who stalked me through the freezing mist of this park before the sun could dare to rise. He that I love, the Ringmaster of the Menagerie, who turned my trauma into a playground. He that I love, who remade my shattered soul into a weapon of pure, unadulterated malice. He that I love, who turned me into a hungry, screaming creature for his lust, craving his touch like a drug. He that I love, who finds beauty in my scars and poetry in my screams. He that I love, who would burn the entire world to ash just to see me smile in the glow of the flames. He that I love, the only man insane enough to love a monster like me.”
In a blur of motion, he lunges. He is on my side of the bench.
His hand snaps around my throat, slamming me back against the cold iron of the bench.
His grip is tight, bruising, cutting off my air just enough to make my head spin.
His face is inches from mine, his eyes blown wide, flickering with a dangerous, manic light.
"Try to leave me again, Ophelia," he hisses, his voice a low, guttural growl, "and I won't just find you. I'll snap your fucking neck and keep your head on my nightstand."
I don't flinch. I don't beg. Instead, I wrap my arms around his neck, pulling him closer, my eyes mirroring his insanity. I let out a jagged, psychotic laugh that echoes through the empty park.
"Do it then, you fucking lunatic," I spit, my voice strained against his grip. "But if you ever leave me—if you ever dare to turn your back on me—I will find you. I will break you in half, piece by agonizing piece, and I'll sew myself into your skin so you can never escape me either."
The tension snaps. He doesn't let go of my throat, but he pulls me into him with a violence that is almost erotic.
We collide, fighting for dominance, a scramble of limbs and teeth.
We grapple, pushing and pulling, a desperate, aggressive struggle that is less about hate and more about a mutual need to destroy and be destroyed.
He overpowers me, pinning my wrists above my head against the bench, his heavy body crushing mine into the cold metal.
Then he kisses me.
It’s not a kiss; it’s a fucking assault.
It’s teeth and tongue and the taste of salt and desperation.
He bites my lip until I taste blood, and I moan into his mouth, arching my back, wanting more of the pain, more of the possession.
It’s a chaotic, starving collision of two broken minds finally finding their match.
He pulls back just an inch, his forehead resting against mine, his breath hot and ragged. His voice is a trembling, obsessive whisper, dripping with a psychological intensity that makes my skin crawl in the best way possible.
"You are mine, Ophelia. Do you understand?
Every fucking atom of your being belongs to me.
I don't just want your love; I want your madness.
I want the parts of you that are too dark for heaven and too vile for hell.
I want to carve my name into your soul so deeply that even death won't be able to scrub it off.
You are my masterpiece, my beautiful, cracked doll, and I will spend every waking second of my existence ensuring you never feel a moment of peace without me.
I will be your air, your blood, your fucking heartbeat.
I will haunt your every thought until there is nothing left of you that isn't me. I love you with a sickness that would make the devil weep, and I will drag you down into the deepest pits of my obsession until we are the only two things left in existence. You are my religion, my ruin, and my only god. And I will kill anyone—man, woman, or ghost—who even thinks about looking at you.”
