26. Gideon

GIDEON

The boardroom doors swing open.

Thirty faces turn toward me. Investors. Lawyers. The remains of my father's legacy. Nolan sits at the far end, flanked by attorneys who look like they already know they're losing.

I take my place on the corner table.

"This meeting is called to order," I say. "We're here to address the Azure Cay acquisition and the fraudulent activity surrounding it."

Nolan stands. "We're here because you've lost control of this company, Carrington. You're emotionally compromised. Sleeping with your assistant?—"

"Careful." My voice drops to ice. "Very careful."

"Or what? You'll threaten me again?" He spreads his arms, playing to the room. "Look at him. He's been unstable since the gala. Suspending board members without evidence. Freezing accounts. Calling federal prosecutors on his own company."

Murmurs ripple through the investors.

I let them.

"You want evidence?" I slide a flash drive across the table. "Every email. Every offshore transfer. Every forged document your team created to frame Cassandra Valeen. It's all there."

Nolan's smirk falters. "Fabricated."

"It's been verified by independent forensic accountants." I turn to the investors. "The conspiracy to remove me as CEO began fourteen months ago. Nolan recruited board members, falsified acquisition records, and attempted to blame an innocent woman for his fraud."

"She's not innocent. She's your mistress."

The word lands like a slap.

I stand. Walk around the table until I'm inches from his face.

"You want to talk about emotional instability?" I control what comes out, low, deadly. "Let's talk about the man who tried to destroy a woman's career because he couldn't touch mine. Let's talk about cowardice dressed up as ambition."

Nolan's attorney tugs his sleeve. He shakes her off.

"You're making a mistake," he hisses.

"I've made plenty." I step back. "You're just the last one."

I turn to the room.

"The evidence has been turned over to federal prosecutors. Anyone connected to this conspiracy will be removed from Carrington International effective immediately. Any investor who wishes to leave can do so. I won't stop you."

Silence.

Then—chairs scraping. Papers shuffling. The sound of empires crumbling.

Nolan doesn't move.

Neither do I.

"Get him out of my sight," I say.

Security escorts him past me. His eyes burn with hatred.

I don't flinch.

The war isn't over.

But finally , I'm winning.

The projector hums to life behind me.

Thirty-two executives, fourteen investors, and three federal agents fill the conference room. Nobody's eating the catered lunch. Nobody's touching their water glasses.

Everyone's watching me.

"On screen one," I say, clicking the remote, "you'll see Nolan Reeve's personal financial transactions spanning the last twenty-two months."

The first slide appears. Gasps ripple through the room.

"Four million dollars routed through shell companies in the Caymans. False vendor approvals tied to Azure Cay renovations. And—" I click again, "—email correspondence between Nolan and six board members outlining a plan to remove me as CEO following the acquisition."

Nolan's attorney stands. "My client denies?—"

"Sit down." I don't raise my voice. I don't need to. "You'll get your turn."

He sits.

I click to the next slide. "On screen two—the forged documents used to frame Cassandra Valeen during the investor gala. Forensic metadata proves these were created after she left the island."

Bianca steps forward, tablet in hand. "I've verified every piece of evidence personally. The signatures claiming Miss Valeen authorized fraudulent payments are identical to ones found in Nolan Reeve's private server. My full report has been submitted to federal investigators."

The senior agent nods.

"The board members involved have been identified," Bianca continues. "Legal injunctions are being filed as we speak."

Chaos erupts.

"This is insane?—"

"I wasn't involved?—"

"We need to recess?—"

I let them panic. Let them sweat.

"We're not recessing," I say calmly. "We're cleaning house."

The main doors open. Security files in.

"Lawrence Wen." I read from the list. "Mason Webb. Patricia Holloway. Victoria Sims." Each name lands like a hammer. "You've been implicated in the conspiracy. You're suspended effective immediately pending federal investigation."

"But I?—"

"Security will escort you out."

One by one, they're led away. Some protest. Some go white. One woman cries. I feel nothing.

Bianca waits until the doors close again.

"One more thing." She pulls up the final slide. "Cassandra Valeen has been cleared of all accusations. The evidence proves she was not only innocent—she was the first person to uncover the fraud."

The room goes quiet.

I grip the edge of the table. "Miss Valeen acted with integrity. She brought her concerns to me, and I failed to protect her from retaliation. That failure is mine alone. But her name is clear. And anyone who repeats the lies spread about her will answer to my legal team."

The federal agent stands. "We'll be conducting interviews beginning immediately. Anyone with information should remain on site."

Executives exchange nervous glances.

I gather my papers. "This meeting is adjourned."

Bianca paces beside me as I walk out. "That went better than expected."

"They're scared."

"Good."

I pause at the elevator. Take out my phone. Cassie's contact stares back at me.

"She knows now," I say quietly. "That her name is clear."

"Are you going to call her?"

I look at the screen.

"I don't know if I've earned that right yet."

The elevator doors open. I step inside.

The war is almost over.

But the hardest battle is still ahead.

The cameras are already rolling when I step to the podium.

I didn't invite them. They just showed up—vultures smelling blood. The shareholder meeting's conclusion leaked within minutes. Now every major outlet is broadcasting live from the Carrington International lobby.

Let them.

"Mr. Carrington," a reporter shouts, "is it true you've removed six board members?"

"Yes."

"Are federal investigators involved?"

"Yes."

"What about Cassandra Valeen? Was she really innocent?"

I grip the edges of the podium. This is the question I've been waiting for. The one that terrifies me.

"Miss Valeen was completely cleared this afternoon," I say. "The evidence proves she not only had no involvement in the fraud—she was the one who uncovered it."

Murmurs ripple through the crowd.

"Can you confirm the nature of your relationship with her?"

Silence.

Every instinct tells me to deflect. To protect. To hide behind corporate speak and careful non-answers. That's what the old Gideon would do.

The old Gideon lost her.

"Miss Valeen and I have been in a personal relationship," I say clearly. "It began during the Azure Cay retreat. It was never inappropriate. It was never transactional. And any suggestion otherwise is false."

The room explodes.

"Are you saying you're in love with her?"

I look directly into the nearest camera. "I'm saying she's the best thing that ever happened to me. And I spent too long pretending otherwise."

My phone starts buzzing immediately. Everett. Board members. Delilah.

I ignore them all.

"One more question," a reporter calls. "What does this mean for Carrington International?"

I step back from the podium. "It means we're done hiding. Done covering up. Done letting power protect corruption." I pause. "If that costs me the company, so be it."

I walk off before they can ask more.

Bianca meets me in the hallway. "Your father is furious."

"Good."

"The stock is already reacting."

"I don't care."

She studies me. "You just changed everything."

"No." I pull out my phone. Stare at Cassie's name. "I just stopped lying. The rest is up to her."

I hit call.

It rings once. Twice.

Then her voice—the one I've been craving for weeks.

"Gideon?"

I let my eyelids fall.

"Can we talk?"
