Chapter 18 Da Ling Backs Down
At that moment, a creak sounded from the front door of the inn.
Qiu Gu and Hua Pi Gui had returned.
Hua Pi Gui had returned her face, revealing her original faceless ghost form.
They saw the golden barrier rising inside the inn.
They also saw Da Ling on the bridge with a hostile look, and me standing guard.
They all froze for a second.
"Yo, so lively?"
Hua Pi Gui laughed coquettishly. "Going all out?"
Qiu Gu's cloudy eyes fixed on the barrier, a flicker of wariness flashing across them.
"Ox-nose's demon-slaying barrier. Little girl, are you crazy? Starting this thing up will cost you half your life!"
I looked at them and said gravely, "Qiu Gu, today's trouble started with you. If you let Da Ling run wild any longer, once the barrier fully activates, none of you will escape unscathed!
"Don't forget, you too are sealed here. If the barrier goes out of control, you'll be the first ones hit!"
Qiu Gu and Hua Pi Gui's faces shifted slightly.
They looked like they knew how powerful this barrier was. Mooching food and drink was one thing, but touching the core was something they couldn't handle.
Hua Pi Gui's eyes darted as she looked at Da Ling.
"Da Ling, let it go. Why get worked up over a little girl?
"Besides, the one you're mad at is her Master. She's been dead for years. You've dug up his grave so many times, you should be over it by now.
"The mushroom fried rice this girl makes is pretty good. It'd be a shame if she died."
Qiu Gu rasped too, "Da Ling, this barrier isn't for fun. It's not worth it for a few scumbags."
Da Ling stared at me hard. He glanced at the ready barrier.
And at Qiu Gu and Hua Pi Gui who seemed to side with me.
His eerie face showed changing expressions.
It seemed he realized killing again today was out of the question.
Forcing through the barrier might hurt me, but he himself wouldn't fare well after sleeping for a thousand years.
"Humph!"
After a long pause, he snorted coldly, retracting his demonic aura.
"Girl, today I'll spare you for Qiu Gu and Hua Pi Gui's sake. But remember, what your Master owes me isn't settled yet!"
With that, his figure turned into a white streak of light.
He vanished into the deep mountains behind the inn.
